Title: Competition Entry discussion!
Post by: Leon on 01 February 2012, 05:05:08 AM
If you'd like to discuss any of the entries, please do so here, or start a new thread to do so.  Please do not post comments in the actual Entry threads.

Feel free to start WIP threads for your entries as well!

Hi Andy.

For someone who doesn't think they're very good at painting, you've done a damn fine job!

Hi Techno and Leon thank you for your kind comments.  Perhaps, it must be a self-confidence issue.
Anyway I have posted some more entries World War I infantry and cavalry.

Just basing my entries ready for priming...
As an aside:

Does 'Kiera' go under 'Foot Historical preC20th', 'Fantasy' or 'In Nik's Dreams', sorry; 'Open!'  ;D ;)

I think she would be OK in Fantasy or Open - but not in Foot as you would need 3 of her on a single base. I'm sure you may get bonus points from Nik for triplet Kiera...

My 10mm work is nowhere near and so don't be demoralised, i'd be happy to paint 10mm as well as you all.
Also i did paint them for Leon for website so put more effort in than i would normally lol

Just been having a look through the entries as well.

Quite frankly the detail of painting here makes a mockery of the the scale! Great work everyone  :-bd

I'm planning to get some entries in. Not that I can hold a candle to most the stuff here but never mind.  :)

There is a 15mm Fantasy range lurking on the website!  (Not for long though, they'll be coming over to Minibits soon.)

I'm surprised no-one's entered one of the 28mm Elizabethan's yet!

It's not something I've thought about.  We've only ever had 10mm entries apart from these ones this year, so it's never been an issue.  I doubt we'll get many more 15/28 entries though, so we will probably put them all in together.

I will withdraw them if people don't agree with it, but i suppose it is they are in the open and not fantasy section.

Nah, they're Pendraken figures, there's nothing in the rules against it!

There's actually a couple of items in the Fantasy which are easily 35-40mm high, they'd be great entries!

I humbly think different scales cannot compete among them as the bigger the model the easier to use different techniques and get better results IMHO. But of course I'll happily accept any decision on this regard; I commented it initially because I was highly impressed with the level of Spenno's dwarves thinking they were just 10mm  :)
OTOH, in the anything goes category you could technically include anything in any scale.  :-\
Title: Re: Competition Entry discussion!
Post by: fred. on 10 February 2012, 08:28:53 PM
Considering Open already includes Armies, Dungeons, Monster and individual figures, I'm not sure the scale makes any great difference.

The more the merrier - while Pendraken is primarily known for its 10mm figures, if the 15 or 28mm figures do well in the painting comp then it will raise their profile.

Have you considered a prize category for "best painting tip"?  Perhaps one tip allowed per photo submission.   I suspect everyone is looking for a few good tips to improve their 10mm painting.  Anyway, just an idea for next year.

I totally agree with Fred...I'm sure the judges will take things into consideration as regards scale anyway. (and of course the obvious bribes of bottles of an alcoholic nature...hic !)
If 'he'd' been cast up ....I'd have been having a go at painting 'Jim'...a 10mm scale monster that's nearer to a 'normal' 15mm scale.
I'll just have to make a figure that I think will fit into the Pendraken ranges....and suits my own style of infrequent painting.
Cheating ....Me ? ;)

Best painting tip is a good idea for future comps.
Here's mine.....Don't leave your new brushes in a little tin pencil case on the floor when you have cats.....Under NO circumstances take one of the said brushes...Remove the plastic ferule...Put it in your mouth and suck, to tease the tip together.....Unless you want to know what matured cat widdle tastes like.
Unfortunately I do....An experience I do NOT want to repeat.
For your information it does NOT taste like flat lager ! :-&

Cheers - Phil. (It's made me go cold remembering that.....UGH !!!....Spit , spit, spit.....Wash mouth out, over and over again !)

You're all mad.  These entries are rubbish.   >:(

Not a painted eyebrow or button on show anywhere, let along properly painted eyes.

Shocking lack of quality.   :D ;D :D ;D

Aye some pretty fine examples on show so far.  The cheese army is going to be difficult to beat i suspect.  A very nice little offering there.

I like the 'Third Reich' in power armour...just a really simple but effective model and paintjob.

The undead mist bases look fab individually but i'm really not sure on mass...

I like the fantasy army although it doesn't look 'cohesive' enough for me.

So far, i'm not seeing the 'socks blown off' entry though!  I reckon its lurking out there... :D

If i get a bit of time i might dig out a few of my feeble offerings, steal their souls, and post them up for common ridicule.  After all, someone has to come last!   ;)

Wow, the anything goes category is really hotting up. Thanks for the kind comments re: the wee louts from Cheddar.

I'm loving Spenno's Greeks, TerryM's 'Austrians' and those converted French dragoons by Sheepman 1.  =D>

I wonder, how kosher is it to post constituents of my Cheddar army in other categories? I know a couple of others have done so, but how do the judges look upon such a thing? i.e., the tank in the vehicle section and one of the pike blocks in the fantasy section...
Title: Re: Competition Entry discussion!
Post by: GavinP on 21 February 2012, 10:19:24 AM
To be perfectly honest I think entering the same thing twice is pretty poor form, but then I'm not a judge. I personally won't be entering anything that I haven't specifically painted this year for this competition either, although the rules allow anything "not entered into a competition" before so i could enter any of my WW2 stuff. At a vehicle per entry I could probably do 100+ entries without breaking sweat as I'm sure many others could.

My view is that multiple entries in a single category are self defeating as you are likely to split the judges' votes between your entries.

Not sure about an army entry in open, that then appears in its constituent parts in the other categories.

if the light isn't good outside, light your figure with an angle poise lamp with a blue plastic bottle in front of it. It does work. Although did it once with a halogen lamp went out for a couple of minute and the bottle melted on the table  :o
Title: Re: Competition Entry discussion!
Post by: Techno on 23 February 2012, 07:55:47 PM
Thanks Matt.
Used to use something along those lines a while ago.
That involved three angle poise 'type' lamps...One each side....And one over the top.....and a colour correction filter over the lens, so everything didn't go too orange ! ;D

Might have to 'bite the bullet' and get another lamp.....Think the little digital camera can correct the 'colour temperature'....As long as I remember to set the little swine to do that.

Must try and get some better results than those I rush thro' at the moment.

Thanks again - Phil.

I've nicked the wife's natural light lamp she uses for her cross-stitch.

I'm running through various options with my phone's camera and her proper camera, which is taking much better pics but without a Macro lens I'm having issues trying to get all the figures on the base in focus all at the same time!

Can I assume it'll be okay to post what I have from the phone which is at least all in focus and replace the pic later if I can actually manage to get a brighter in focus shot?

As Techno says, that's fine, you can either send me the link for the new pic, or make a new post and I'll delete the original.

The pics you've just posted do look very dark, so whatever you used for the bottom right will be the way to go on further pics I reckon.  If you're having trouble with the focus, sometimes it's better to pull away from the target and then crop the photo once it's on your computer.  Most cameras these days have enough resolution to still give a detailed shot from a further distance.

Aye why not Lemmy.

I looked at all my stuff and thought, 'aye, that looks good at 4' but at 4" its rubbish'. :D  Hehe...

Perhaps the competition should have split the categories to reflect;

1.  Looks good on the tabletop
2.  Looks good up close and personal

There are some cracking entries all round though, so it should be a stiff competition this year.

Awful light outside..no sun since days here in Munich   :-X
got to use the old pic of my Austrian Infantry..but there are too many figs on too many bases on it. So unfortunatelly no pre 20th century category.

J.S. - but how many figures are on one base in the unit? I'm sure there is a loophole Leon will find somewhere for your excellent painting (I know he did for some of my FPW cavalry last year, with a judicious crop here and there).
:D

I know there's still just over a day to go...But can I say many congratulations to all.
I really can't believe how good the standard of painting is (You're all show offs !)...and the quality of a huge number of the photo's is simply astounding.
I'm just going to have to go back to the drawing board.
I might have just ONE more go at photoing Kiera (if that's allowed).
Good luck to the judges !!
Cheers - Phil.

I have to agree, all looking superb!
Three different bats entered in fantasy so far - who'd have thought it!   :D Best bat goes to...
Looks like 'fred 12df' and I are on the same base sizes for Later Roman Legionarii - wonder what rules he is using and if he fancies a game some time?  ;)

3 Bats! I'd only spotted one entry before, hadn't realised I was such a follower...

My Romans are based for WM, but I'm playing far more Hail Caesar (with 10mm) these days. My painted Romans aren't really an army yet
(http://www.kerynne.com/games/images/LateEraRomans/roman_army_raw.pg.JPG)
There are an extra couple of units since that photo, but not many.

If you are up for a game I'm in the NW (between Liverpool and Preston)

The quality and quantity of the entries is really high - and there are more and more by the hour.

I think we need to have product codes with entries, as there are loads I am looking at going I didn't know Pendraken did that!

What are the huts and the baskets on the 30YW camps?

Probably my mistake, I realize that they are not pendraken. Sorry. :-[
I was posting away with my figures, and I did not realize in time the camps were from a different manufacturer.
I shall take them down, (if I can). Yep just replaced them by my wifes artillery.

Sorry - I've nearly done the same thing when looking for figures for the comp, its easy to forget where they came from.

Can you drop me a PM with were the huts are from they look good for Dark Ages.

Well, thanks for your kind words  :)  But it's ok as it is..the Jägers got finished just in time, so I have an entry for the pre 20th cenutry foot category.

And I totally agree that this year's painting comp is just awesome, stunning amount of great pieces of work to be seen here  :-bd

Still struggling to submit my entry as too big to post (>128Mb), anyone have any ideas?

If the pictures is too large and you have no idea how to scale it down (like me) try the following:

open your picture
make screenshot (print button, upper right corner)
open paint
press strg + v
select the funny tool with whom you can cut out parts of a picture (first row in paint next to the "lasso")
cut out your picture
open new paint window
press strg +  v
safe it
done

on the way to re-photograph my one and only dwarf I managed to paint, I lost him  :o luckily with about 40 minutes of backtracking and thought I realised I had probably put him on the book case, the one I had just set all the lights and card etc on... yup in my haste to do the job I knocked him off the back...luckily he didnt go down the gap between the wall nad the skirting board, but with a bit of poking he fell right down the back and onto the floor it was then only the matter of swearing loudly as I managed to squeeze my size 10 hand into a size 8 gap under the furniture.... at least I found him :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[

but apart from my woes... an excellent competition with some fabbo entries well done to everyone who entered  =D> =D> =D>

I genuinely wouldn't like to be a judge on this one.

Definately some close calls to be made!

Will the judges be commenting on their decisions this year?  Why they chose the winners etc.?

I think that would be quite interesting to read.

I've left it up to the Judges whether they would like to add comments when they allocate their points, but hopefully there'll be some feedback.

I'd also hope that given the number of entries this year more visitors bother to vote in the peoples choice than did last year ;)

I agree with these sentiments entirely. Looks to be much easier to make an entry than to have to choose between so many great entries.

It would be interesting to here what the judges are looking for - even if they can't make comments about individual entries.
