Title: Army packs
Post by: grimreaper on 20 March 2010, 10:28:14 AM
Hi have you ever thought of doing army packs that where based on units in action i.e

6th  panzer, 14th panzer, us 101st airbourne etc etc

and acw army packs for  Gettysburg,Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville  etc etc.

just a thought

It's an interesting idea, but if we started doing that, we'd end up with people asking us to put together armies for every minor skirmish in history. It's easier for customer's to come to us with their army lists and we can make it up to their specifications.

i was thinking of the major units only, then they could break up as they want then.

I think its a good idea grimreaper.

It'd be great for example to buy for example a 'US mechanised infantry company - Europe 1944' and have everything there you'd need.

The problem i see is that different rulesets would have different compositions to the example formation above.  Since Pendraken don't produce their own rules, its therefore exceptionally difficult for them to do that.

Personally i think their approach is right, if frustrating for those of us who'd like to purchase set formations where histroy has provided them.

 ;)

We do try and produce armies for certain rules, like the Warmaster Ancients/Medieval armies we have on the website.  Or the BKC armies listed with the WW2 section.  It's just the logistics of providing armies for all periods/rules/nations.  Like I said above, if people come to us with an army list from a set of rules they're looking to use, we can custom-make the army for them.

Don't forget you'll always get conflicting reports of TOE as well...so if PD did this, you'd please some people, but a load of others would get all cross & bothered about it...

Personally, I think part of the fun of this whole (quite frankly bizarre) hobby of ours is doing your own research & then fecking about with what models you need...

Takes some time - but infinitely betterer for you than smoking crack & chasing loose women  8)

Hmm...hang on... ;)

I've always avoided asking for specific troop compositions, trying to craft armies to fit into the packs on the website.  Is it a hassle to deal with a 'bespoke' composition?

Occasionally, but not usually.  If you need for example: 70 in march attack, 40 firing, 18 Dragoons, couple of 12lb'ers...etc' it's not that much hassle to do.  We price it according to the number of figures, and I keep trays of spare figures for a lot of the codes just in case.

We wouldn't want it every day, but it's not really a problem.

That's helpful- I don't really need 'bespoke', more 'padded'.  As I mentioned elsewhere I find problems distribiting 30 figures on the base sizes I use- a frontage of 15 means 5 x 3 bases, and if I do that then they are 40mm, and I feel the men are a little too seperated.  On 40s I like 6 men width bases- 36 man units.  If I go to 30mm then 4 men x 2 ranks x 4 bases- 32 men.

5 man frontages fit on 35mm- and this is between the sizes all my rules work on!

(actually I think I'm being silly- My Black Powder army will have 12-15 units in- might as will just buy another pack to make up the numbers that way! It would be 15 units, 16th pack as filler.)

The only problem i have is i love a tiger  and what can i do with 18 tiger 2's  ;D they will never all do battle at the same time.
i must say that since i have been buying 10/12mm i do enjoy painting them and collecting them. but i realy need to try to sort them out into some sort of units.

... sort them out into some sort of units.

That is the challenge I am balking at at the moment.
