Title: Peninsular Naps British!
Post by: Leon on 24 March 2021, 08:57:21 PM
Tony's been working hard over the past month to get this next batch of the Peninsular sculpts all done for us so the British are now here!  A lot of the infantry are conversions on existing figures with some new cavalry types as well.  Everything went into a master mould yesterday so we're spinning them off at the moment and we'll get cracking on the production moulds while we're getting on with the move as well.

The current plan is for the Portuguese and Brunswickers to be done in April ready to come down to us once we've got moved, then the Spanish in May and June hopefully.  We're in regular contact with Tony so we'll update as we progress with things.

Looking good - will be good to see these at the next stage as the dark putty and shiny base figures make them quite hard to see.

Yeah it's a pain to get good photos of them.  I tried it on a black background as well but then the putty sections disappear into the background, so I'm stuffed either way!

Yep, feels pretty no-win situation on the photos - we'll wait till you get some spun up and can give them a black wash to show the detail, for now we can see the big hats!

I always struggle with photo's of conversions (as Leon knows)......(A brand new, all green stuff figure is FAR easier to photo.)

It's the contrast between the bright, shiny, metal..... and whatever putty is used, that makes things really difficult.

I'm not sure which putty (or mix of putties) Tony uses....But it appears to be a lot darker than green stuff.....and even green stuff can cause problems with the contrast between that and shiny metal.

I always end up tweaking the piccies with an ancient program I've got on the PC, before sending them up to Pendraken Towers, just so Leon has got some chance of seeing 'wot I just made'.

Cheers - Phil. :)

I know what you mean.  When these were being talked about I promised myself I wouldn't go there; now that I've seen them, my resolved has wobbled a bit.

At a guess, it might be ProCreate.  It is a bit more 'sticky' than Green Stuff.
Title: Re: Peninsular Naps British!
Post by: Techno II on 26 March 2021, 07:30:58 AM
It could be Procreate, John, though the times I've used it, it tends to come out as a light grey.

It's possibly a mix of the 'black' part of ProCreate and the 'yellow' of Green stuff, which I occasionally use.....though that comes out as a sort of Khaki colour. :-\

I DO like ProCreate, but find it SO hard to mix, as it's a much stiffer putty. (If I had 'normal' strength fingers for a chap, it wouldn't be so bad.) =)

Cheers - Phil. :)

Yes it does look a bit dark and I agree with the mixing.

Hi, John.

What we'll have to keep an eye out for, is if Tony ever appears to use a light blue putty.

That'll be a mix of the 'white' of Procreate and the blue of Greenstuff...(From the 'leftovers' of the black/yellow mix.....IF Tony is going down that route.)

Cheers - Phil. :)

Putty Forensic Analysis

A new series on Channel 5, hosted by John with technical input from Techno

:P

If I was Tony I'd now be adding a tiny amount of ink to the putty to change the shade....
Title: Re: Peninsular Naps British!
Post by: Techno II on 27 March 2021, 10:17:10 AM
Oh....Stop it !  ;)

The nearest 'colour' that I can equate to with Tony's figures....Is that it looks SLIGHTLY similar to green stuff....After the model has been pressed in a mould.
The heat from the process tends to change the colour of the G/S to a dirty 'browny' green....But not as dark as the figures pictured.

For all I know, Tony might add Red Sylmasta putty to the green.........He might not even use G/S. :o

There's one putty, made by the same folk that 'do' G/S, that IS brown. (If it exists anymore)

Lovely putty to work with......but SO expensive....and it goes off so quickly....and once 'set'....is so brittle, you can't adjust 'things' with a simple bend without it shattering.

My personal putties of choice are......Kneadatite (Green-stuff) .....Magic Sculp...(which I'll mix with the G/S to produce a very soft, light green coloured putty.).....and Milliput.

Cheers - Phil. :)

Miliput?  How 'old school'.  I thought I was the only person still using it.  What do you use it for?  I find is good as a filler and for large models.  Never had much success using it for 10mm stuff though.

I have news from the distant shores...

"Well, that brown stuff I'm using is called, er, Brown Stuff. Yes, really. Available from eBay, but they send it from Spain. The blurb says it's 'better for beginners' - so I thought I should switch!

Seriously, it is very good, I would say a bit stiffer than Green Stuff / Duro, and sets harder, so doesn't require Milliput to be separately mixed & added to it as I usually do. The real determining factor however is not the putty, but the weather. The temperature really. And how much sleep I've had!"

Ohhhhhh ! =)

The Kneadatite 'Brown stuff' I've used in the past, looks a fair bit darker once mixed.....But it certainly sets 'harder' than Green stuff.....It's actually quite brittle, once it's set.
It is/was a lovely putty to work with....VERY easy to smooth....But 'goes off' faster than I really like.....(I'd waste even more of that.)

But.....

Last time I tried to get some.....I was really put off by the price....It WAS around the same price as G/S.....But instead of the best part of a metre of G/S, you'd get around 10cm of Brown stuff for the same amount of dosh !! :o

I know there are quite a few places that sell shorter strips of G/S......But THAT is an expensive way to buy it, if you get through as much as I do.

Good to know, anyway.

Cheers - Phil. :)

When are the Brits going to be in the shop for sale?
If the Line & Light Infantry are ready then these are the bulk of a Brit army  I'd like to make a start on painting them that would encourage me to try out the optimum size for a table, be it in 6x4 or 6x5 or 6x6 modules. My garage is 19'X19' interior measurements.

These days I have trouble getting into  under table cupboards so all this has to do with space around the table. Previously I've had a 6x16 table but usin AoE rules meant unles I was replaying Borodino I didn't actually need that size so i have an indoor 6x4 table and found this last year small games needing depth and at brigade level playing scenarios I don't need the width so hence the trying out  one night games played in 2 to 3 hours. 3 being the maximum.
I thought if I can do that with DBMM I can do it with Napoleonic.

Dragoon was asking when they'd be on the website, so that would be after all the sculpts are done and posted out to the original backers.  Once that's done they'd be added to the website, which I think will be roughly September time.

Soon hopefully!  I've not spoken to the sculptor since we started the move so I need to check in and see how he's getting on.  I'd hope that he's spent the past 2 months working through all of the Brunswickers and Portuguese, maybe some of the Spanish as well.  The British are all moulded so we can start sending those out soon if folks want them.

The first test casts of the buildings arrived last week as well:
