Title: Producing PPE against Covid-19
Post by: Leon on 07 April 2020, 03:32:42 PM
We've got some good news today! We've been looking for ways to help out in the current situation and after a few tests and discussions over the weekend, we are now able to produce PPE/face shields which we will be giving out to local medical facilities.

The first batch have been passed to a local hospice for them to confirm that they're happy with them and then we'll have the green light to produce a lot more.

We expect to be able to produce around 200 face shields per day and we've got enough material here for 2000 of them. Adele's mother has worked in the NHS for almost 40 years, so we're really excited about being able to help her colleagues in the frontline.

The only bad news is you've got to look at my ugly mug wearing one...

UDPATE: The hospice have come straight back with a resounding 'Yes please!' so we've dropped 100 shields over to them today.  50 are going to the phlebotomy department of the hospital tomorrow morning and we've had enquires for more to other facilities.

UPDATE: We've had a lot of people asking if they can donate towards the costs on this, so we've set up a GoFundMe page to raise the £650 needed for the next batch of materials.  This will give another 2000 shields and keep us going for the next 3 weeks.  Hopefully things will have calmed down by then and the traditional supply routes can kick back in.

UDPATE: The hospice have come straight back with a resounding 'Yes please!' so we've dropped 100 shields over to them today.  50 are going to the phlebotomy department of the hospital tomorrow morning and we've had enquires for more to other facilities.

Update on the PPE production Veterans In Crisis Sunderland came down today to pick up 200 face shields, which will be going out to all of the GP Surgeries in Sunderland. Yesterday we dropped 100 at Teesside Hospice and 50 went to the Phlebotomy Dept at James Cook University this morning.

PPE Update (Monday): It's been a busy one today with 460 face shields going out to a variety of facilities.  The help from our volunteers has really helped increase production so we should be able to continue at 400-500 per day for the foreseeable. We've got more material arriving tomorrow as well.  Today's volunteers were our very own Dave , plus Scott! Scott used to do a bit of casting work for us but now works for Darlington Council in their safeguarding team. Some of you might have also seen him on the Colonel Bill's stand at some of the wargaming shows!

PPE Update (Tues): A lot of prep work today with almost 1000 clear shields ready to go with the lasered headbands.  We've got nearly 2000 more booked in so we'll keep producing these as fast as we can!

PPE Update (Wed): Today's been a productive one with 570 face shields sent out.  Thanks to today's volunteers Mike and Jackie!  This couple work for us casting and packaging usually, but they gave up their Wednesday evening to help out with the face shield production.

PPE Update (Thurs): Today we were joined by our local MP, Jacob Young! Jacob had volunteered to come along for a few hours and help us prep the face shields, so it was great to meet him and have a chat.  Jacob and Rachel got through several hundred shields during their shift, which will be heading out to a variety of facilities over the coming days.

PPE Update (Fri): We've put out a load of batches today, helped by our volunteer team of Kath and Rachel! We'd like to give a big thanks to Rachel Austin as this was her 4th volunteer shift for us so far. She's still working her day job at Hartlepool Deaf Centre as well, so we really appreciate her giving up her spare time.

We've also teamed up with the guys at Warbases who will now be providing equipment to their local area up in Scotland.  We've used some of our GoFundMe donations to send them a batch of materials, so today we had their first update as well.

PPE Update (Mon): We've sent out over 800 face shields today! 550 from us here in the north-east and another 292 sent out by Warbases up in Scotland. We had Dave and Scotty on the volunteer shift today, so thanks to them both for their hard work.

PPE Update (Tues): Today was one big batch with 400 face shields going out. Thanks to Carl who was on volunteer duty today! Tomorrow's batches will see us pass the 4000 mark, so thanks again to everyone who donated to the funding campaign.

PPE Update (Wed): Today saw over 600 face shields sent out by the combined 'Wardraken' team.  We've got more booked in for tomorrow so we'll keep the laser machines going!

PPE Update (Thurs): Over 500 face shields went out today from us here in the north-east and Warbases up in Scotland.  Today's volunteers were Jess Jordan Gelders and Jimbo Russell Jordan! Jess had recently started her own The Fibro Guy clinic but had to temporarily shutdown due to the Corona situation, while Jimbo is a musician whose gigs have all been cancelled. So they were happy to come and help for an afternoon!

PPE Update (Fri): We've been seeing the requests slow down this week so hopefully the traditional PPE supply routes are starting to catch up again.

PPE Update (Mon): We're getting on top of the production so for the first time in 3 weeks we've got face shields prepped and ready to go straight out! The requests are slowing down as the regular PPE channels get up to speed, but we'll keep going for now until the material runs out (at 6000 produced) and see whether we're still needed.

PPE Update (Tues): Just a small update for today, with 100 shields given to Premier Care Homes for their staff.  We've got 260 booked in for tomorrow, so the supply continues!

PPE Update (Wed): Today we had 220 face shields going out, including 100 posted out.

PPE Update (Thurs): We had 200 more going out today.

PPE Update (Sunday): We'd like to thank everyone again for all of your donations, the response we've received has been incredible and we really appreciate your generosity during these difficult times.

We've seen the requests for the PPE really slow down over the last 7 days and we've only got 10 face shields booked in for this coming week. We've also got close to 300 face shields prepped and ready to go out as soon as folks need them. From talking to our local council it would seem that the proper PPE supply routes are getting back up to speed now, which is fantastic.

At this point we've decided to turn off the donations for the funding, as we've got more than enough here to pay for all of the material costs we've incurred so far. If something changes and we need to resume face shield production, we've got enough to pay for further material if necessary. We could also look at using some of the funds to purchase professional face shields and distribute those instead.

There will be a chunk of money left over which will be donated to charity. Once we've got the rest of the face shields sent out and things have calmed down a little, we'll be sending out a full costing breakdown so that you can see exactly where your donations have been spent and which charities we have donated to.

Thanks again for your support, it means so much to so many people currently on the frontline. We're all living in a strange world right now and to see everyone working together towards something positive has been fantastic to be a part of.

Final PPE Update!

The GoFundMe money was transferred to us last week so we've now been able to finalise the accounts and get the payments over to the charities. In total we produced 6000 visors which were distributed across 83 different facilities. Another 1000 visors were produced by the folks at Warbases and given out in their local area.

Once the costs and fees had been taken into account there was £2883.21 left from all of your donations. We've divided this among 4 charities and made the following donations:
£720.80 to NHS Charities Together (https://www.nhscharitiestogether.co.uk/)
£720.80 to Teesside Hospice (https://www.teessidehospice.org/)
£720.80 to Veterans In Crisis Sunderland (https://veteransincrisis.co.uk/)
£720.81 to The Trussell Trust (https://www.trusselltrust.org/)

We'd like to thank every single person who donated to this campaign. We were completely overwhelmed by the generosity of all of you, both within our wargaming community and beyond. Your support helped protect people working on the frontline and your money will now continue to benefit people in so many ways.

We'd also like to thank our volunteers who came along and gave up their free time to help clean and prep the visors. Rach, Kath, Dave, Scott, Mike, Jackie, Lynne, Carl, Jess, Jimbo and Jacob! A special thanks as well to Martin, Glenn and Diane at Warbases for getting involved.

Finally, the Covid-19 pandemic is far from over but there's some light at the end of the tunnel and we can start to see our friends and family again soon. And hopefully we'll be able to meet all of you somewhere down the line and thank you in person for your support!

Well done and a thank you to all the Pendraken team.  I have send you a wee personal Leon .  My daughter is on a front line ward in Belfast.  Sit Rep as of 7 April - they had paper masks only and were changing them every 15 minutes.

If PPE does not get issued today,  would it be possible for me to buy and donate a quantity of masks ?  I presume the design allows Sklar/VHP sterilization ?

Sorry to hear that, I'm not sure how we'd get them over there but I'm certainly willing to help if possible.

The masks are all polypropylene and acetate so they should be OK to be sterilised and re-used in theory.

Absolutely marvellous. It seems daft that there hasn't been a general call for very school tech in every school that has a 3d printer or laser cutter to start banging them out.

Great stuff.

Thank you very much Leon - I am awaiting the Minister's Private Office to get back to me on the status the shipment of PPE (5 million pieces) shipment sent in on the 4th.  When it will get to the Wards.   Will get back to you if needs must.

Great stuff.

I know at least two of the secondary schools near me have been doing this and from Facebook that other schools around the county are also manufacturing them.

I guess it's entirely down to availability of resources, the capacity to manufacture, a means of safe delivery and a place to send them.

The GoFundMe will remain active for the timebeing as we might be able to use the excess funds to buy material for other people.  There's also the chance that this thing goes on longer than another 3 weeks, and we'll need to keep making them in the longer-term.  We'll be making some enquiries tomorrow to see what we can do.

I shared the story here, and sent out a couple of links to people who wanted to contribute.

I have two (actually serious for once) questions.

Firstly, I'm guessing you're not casting the face shields. Did you just happen to have the right machinery ... or what? How?

Secondly, and probably slightly more selfishly, does this change your status in the eyes of the Lockdown law? Are you now an essential service?

Whatever, I am <insert emotion here> and I hope that your action are not forgotten when life returns to whatever passes for normality.

Great idea Leon, when I looked last night it was doing well, this morning once I had found my credit card*, it is well over double funded!

*As a consequence of lockdown, I've stopped routinely putting my wallet in my trouser pocket.

I too am intrigued that you had the right materials available to do this in bulk.

Wow! A lot has happened in the last 24 hours when I last logged in!  Fantastic work, Leon! =D>

Glad to have made a donation for the North East and Leon. Does anyone know if others are doing this already for other parts of the country?

Reminds me of past communities clubbing together to buy a Spitfire ... although in Techno's case it might have been a chariot ....   :-\

Yes, it's going on all over - as I said previously, a lot of school are getting involved (although that might have gone on hiatus now it's Easter holidays)

I saw an item on the local news about a local manufacturer that had switched to producing face shields.  Can't remember what their usual business was, but the minimum requirement seems to be clear plastic, a cutter and a way of making the head-piece.

Keep up the good work chaps  =D>

I shared the story here, and sent out a couple of links to people who wanted to contribute.

I have two (actually serious for once) questions.

Firstly, I'm guessing you're not casting the face shields. Did you just happen to have the right machinery ... or what? How?

Secondly, and probably slightly more selfishly, does this change your status in the eyes of the Lockdown law? Are you now an essential service?

Whatever, I am <insert emotion here> and I hope that your action are not forgotten when life returns to whatever passes for normality.

They're using the laser cutter, it'll do plastics as well as MDF  :-B

Addendum: many schools were open for the children of key workers where childcare wasn't available, this is possibly continuing through the holidays.  At my eldest's school the key worker children were helping in the DCT workshop with production - they have laser cutters and thermoformers, probably 3D printers too.

I agree I think the media need to put out some more positive news.  Like all the things communities are doing, the 98 year gent who survived etc.

I have emailed BBC Look North with the details of what's happened to see if they thought it might be newsworthy.  I phoned M'lady to warn her in case they call and its put the wind in her bloomers :)

Quote from: fred. on 09 April 2020, 10:09:02 AM
I too am intrigued that you had the right materials available to do this in bulk.

The headbands are made from 3 sections which can be cut on the laser machines, so we just needed to buy a load of the polypropylene sheets to get started.  The machines needed a full cleandown as well, hence the delay on custom bases orders at the moment.  We're going to switch one machine back to MDF later this afternoon, just to catch up a bit, and then it'll be cleaned ready to go back to headbands tomorrow.

The front shield is just a clear acetate, the type of thing you'd use on an overhead projector, or as a cover on a dissertation/presentation.  They just need the corners trimming, which we're doing by hand, and then 4 holes putting in using a standard hole punch.

I don't know to be honest, we've not asked anyone about that.  We're still OK to work under the current guidelines anyway, so I suppose if we did get stopped by the police then we'd have a better reason than 'toy soldiers' to give them!

(I know some of you are now thinking 'better than soldiers... how's that possible!?'   ;)

PPE Update (Monday): It's been a busy one today with 460 face shields going out to a variety of facilities:

North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust (200)
Tollesby Hall Nursing Home (100)
The Garth Surgery, Guisborough (50)
The Green House Surgery, Redcar (50)
Germaina House care home, Redcar (25)
Medical Admissions Unit, James Cook University Hospital (20)
Adult social care home, Saltburn (15)

The help from our volunteers has really helped increase production so we should be able to continue at 400-500 per day for the foreseeable. We've got more material arriving tomorrow as well.

Today's volunteers were our very own Dave , plus Scott! Scott used to do a bit of casting work for us but now works for Darlington Council in their safeguarding team. Some of you might have also seen him on the Colonel Bill's stand at some of the wargaming shows!

Had a query from a local pharmacy today.  They have stepped into the gap in dealing with a lot of aliments that normally go to GP surgery.   They are taking temperatures etc and looking for signs - often to reassure elderly that they don't have Covid 19.

I am dropping in a half a dozen Pendraken PPE shields tomorrow morning.

Jacob had volunteered to come along for a few hours and help us prep the face shields, so it was great to meet him and have a chat.  Jacob and Rachel got through several hundred shields during their shift, which will be heading out to a variety of facilities over the coming days.

So, today's batches have gone out to:
The Norton Medical Centre (100)
Walsingham Support group (100)

Castle Dean care home (50)

PPE Update (Fri): We've put out a load of batches today, helped by our volunteer team of Kath and Rachel! We'd like to give a big thanks to Rachel Austin as this was her 4th volunteer shift for us so far. She's still working her day job at Hartlepool Deaf Centre as well, so we really appreciate her giving up her spare time.

Saint Michael's Hospice, Harrogate (70)
Heritage Health Care, Darlington (75)
Jervaulx Care Home, Skelton (30)
Sandbanks Care Centre Redcar (80)
Darlington Borough Council child services (10)
Care Workers, Hartlepool (10)
Willow Green Care Home, Darlington (70)
Roseberry Funeral Service (30)
Manor House Surgery (20)
Darlington care home (30)

We've also teamed up with the guys at Warbases who will now be providing equipment to their local area up in Scotland.  We've used some of our GoFundMe donations to send them a batch of materials, so today we had their first update as well:

"Warbases are pleased to announce we managed to get PPE Visors out to the following today;

We're quite hopeful at the moment, we've spoken to the local council procurement people and they said that they're seeing more PPE coming into the area, so it's just a case of how long it takes for that to filter its way down to all of the facilities.  We've managed to get ahead of ourselves as well for the first time since we started, so there's about 1000 shields prepped and ready to go straight out as soon as people get in touch.

Good news that you seem to have fulfilled the NE and Scotland's requirements. Well done.

If you have any left over at the end of the ... situation ... then would you sell them off? I fancy trying one for minor jobs like when using the Dremmel.

We'll have the laser files still so we can produce them again going forward, no worries there.  I'm not sure how many we'll have left but we can certainly have a look when the time comes.

Funds are all fine, the response we got from everybody was incredible so we've got more than enough in there to keep producing for a long time.  We spoke with our local council PPE guy last week and he said that they're starting to see large-scale manufacturers get up to speed now so there should be a lot more equipment coming into the supply chains over the coming weeks.  There's one near us here (Labman) who are producing 1000's per day so once they've supplied all of the hospitals they can start distributing to the care homes, surgeries, pharmacies that we're currently getting requests from.

Today's batches went out to:
North East Nursing & Care Services. (300)
Stanley Park care home (100)
Middlesbrough Grange Residential Care Home (30)

Shame you are not closer to Bristol Leon - the need amongst the local smaller in-home elderly and dementia support care businesses is still urgent.

We know of one local Bristol business - Home Instead - that enables the elderly to remain in their own homes with daily support - where the staff are having to use home-made masks, as they just cannot get anything else. Often their customers are very frail and medically very vulnerable but are strong-willed and self determined enough to want to remain in their homes and the community, and they rely on these staff as a daily life-line and much needed company against total isolation.

I am sure there must be similar situations up near you as well but I expect these small businesses - with hugely dedicated staff - probably are unaware that the fantastic service you provide is available to them.

Keep up the fantastic work
Mark

Luckily we've been able to go through our local council guy, who sent an email out to their whole business directory about it, so all of the local care homes and facilities have been made aware of us (and others in the area doing it).
