Title: Korea 1950 Forces
Post by: Matt J on 17 February 2020, 11:19:16 PM
With the new house still a building site painting has been pretty non-existent for the past few months. However I needed to get something done to preserve my sanity so I dug out my US Korea forces I nearly finished last year and sat in the kitchen with a head torch (light in there is awful and my lamps are packed away somewhere) applied decals and flocked the bases.

Here they are -

Infantry (17 stands so far)

M16 'meat choppers'

and the big beasts..M26 and M45 Pershings

More to add (Shermans, reccy, HQ, airpower etc)

Cheers

A very impressive piece of work that raises my own questions.  I am working on a Korean War project and I have a query as to which uniform colour from the range of Vallejo paints to use.  With five different armies there will be a need for five different colours.  Which is the right one for each army?

South Korean:      ?
USA (summer):           VAL 889 Olive Drab?
British (tropical):   VAL 866 Grey Green?
North Korean:      VAL 879 Green Brown?
Chinese (summer):   VAL 954 Yellow Green?
Chinese (winter):   ?

Then there is the issue of colours for vehicles too.  For the British I gather VAL897 Bronze Green would be right.  What about other armies?

Observations, suggestions and recommendations would be welcome.

This is just superb.   Nice use of the 'world eaters' badge as well !

Although the figures are beautiful, it is the basing that immediately
jumps out.   This will hopefully inspire others to look at this range.

I can't really help on that one, I use GW paints myself (those of the silly names), but i will say I'm never really too bothered about finding the right shade of green because you'll never really be right and never really be wrong! What I do look for is a contrast between opposing forces so my North Korea armour is darker and a bit more, what I have in my mind, as Russian green.

Yes I can always press gang them into my 6mm heretics as super heavies from some traitor IG regiments! (need some[many] detachable skulls and spikes!)

Just had a look at the 'visual upgrades' applied to US Armour during the Korean War.
There are some really wacky paint jobs !

I thought you might be applying some artistic license but your tanks are spot on.

By the way, can we have a quick basing tutorial please ?   Really effective use of
flock colours.

Lovely work, very effective basing

Yes US tanks in Korea had some crazy paint jobs. I had trouble finding colour photos but plenty of black and white photos with monsters and tigers in particular. The Koreans were considered backward and could be frightened by tank 'monsters', not sure if it had much effect on the well trained battle hardened KPA though. But the tankers revelled in the chance to match the 'fly boys' in stylizing their gear.

Basing was pretty straightforward.
Models on bases then I use sharp sand applied in 2 or 3 phases to make the bases more realistic with hollows and mounds and ensure the model metal bases are covered.
Spray undercoat, I use white myself but everyone has their preference.
Base coat of Steel legion drab (I use GW paints) slightly watered to get in the recesses.
Heavy dry brush with Tallarn sand then light drybrush with Screaming skull (also used to pick out edges on the larger rocks).
Shrubs then applied - Tajima 1 small shrubs in olive
Then dabs of PVA where I want static grass and I use Javis 2mm autumn mix (available from Leon/minibits).

The hope is the look is something like the rocky hill terrain in Korea. I looked at google street view for Osan (where us troops - task force Smith- first encountered KPA forces) and looked at the terrain where the us forces were positioned.

That's what I call serious research.

If you are going for the early encounters, and want to keep to the script, the M9 Bazooka is a much less effective weapon than the M20. (Read Task Force Smith accounts)

You could just designate the bazookas M9 or use Pendraken AFM9 if you wanted to be pedantic and have a separately  based crew.

As I said earlier, one hell of a good shop window, and I expect an increase in Korean range sales .  :)

Thanks Phil! (you sculpt 'em and i'll paint 'em up  ;))

No, fortunately I'm not pedantic  :D (I don't think the difference is really noticeable at this scale!).

IIRC one guy fired something like 22 rounds at the T 34's with the M9 within 15 yards and it was like throwing ping pong balls, even in the rear of the tank didn't break the armour (I think a fair few rounds were defective though).
M20 much more effective, unless you are an Aussie (issued the weapon but not the bit about removing the grease from the ignition system - not great when staring down a T34/85  :D)

Matt - you have done your homework!   And yes, a lot of the original M9 dud rounds were WW2 vintage. Look forward to the action shots.

When you all get a few orders in.   We still need the North Korean motorcycle combos  for the early war invasion force.
