Now I've order the troops its time to open a new painting diary so you can all share the joy of international shipping ;) :-w
and my eventual painting progress :)
This project will produce the following DBA armies
- 2x II/32a Later Carthaginian - with the extras to do II/32b the in Africa version
- 2x II/33 Polybian Roman
- 2x II/39a Iberian, II/39b Celtiberian
- II/5h Siciliot
- II/8a Bruttian or Lucanian, II/8c Apulian
- II/11 Gallic
- II/9a Syracuse in Sicily
So 10 armies with a pair or Carthaginian and Roman armies plus various 'allies' for Big Battle DBA :)
I've made a start on my painting research for the Punic wars project and I'm thinking about skin tone and hair colours
I typically use Vallejo 955 Flat Flesh highlighted with 845 Sunny Skin Tone and stereo-typically would use 867 Dark Blue Grey for hair for 'Mediterranean types'
I'm interested in any feedback on 'nationalities' that would vary significantly from this
The 'nationalities' included in the armies I'm doing:
Romans
Carthaginian
Poeni
Libyan
Numidians
Iberian / Celtiberian
Siciliot
Gauls
Bruttian, Lucanian, Apulian
Syracuse
Tarentines
I've just remembered this useful discussion from a couple of years ago
Skin tones

It's an interesting period with the Romans losing every now and then (and they lose big too!). A buddy of mine wants too play it but his eyes are too bad for 10mm he says so he only wants to go 28mm... =)
Ah well; the research certainly was fun and painting and collecting the Romans too. Too bad he still hasn't finished even one Carthaginian! >:( Could have done both sides in 10mm by now.
Good luck with the project though; I'm sure they'll look great Paul!
Cheers,
Rob
Thanks Rob, I'm enjoy the research and looking forward to the figures arriving :)
It's been decades, but my recollection of DBA meets Punic Wars was one of command problems for the polyglot Carthaginians.
This led to their being ground down by the more heterogeneous Roman legions.
Impatience got the better of me :-w and I asked Leon how my order is progressing :-[
He replied to my email very promptly as always (despite it being the weekend) :)
Apparently the casting guys were just finishing it off on Friday afternoon <:-P <:-P
As Leon said my order was completed on Friday, checked on Monday and picked up by the courier on Tuesday :) :) :)
Tracking shows it as Processed at Teesside :)
'Tis en route! Hopefully it'll arrive quickly in NZ and Customs can get it processed for you.
It "Departed Facility in EAST MIDLANDS - UK" at 00:52 Wednesday local time
According to the parcel tracking service who brought my mat from Europe to Asia, it's still in the warehouse. Curious - we played a game on it yesterday.
I hope this parcel has a smoother run than the ECW stuff we bought a while ago.....that seemed to visit many places along the way IIRC?
Hopefully it will at least equal the best UK/NZ delivery time I have had which stands at 6 days from sending email order to turning up in my mailbox.
Yes, the ECW order got stuck in Beijing for quite a while :-w
And neither Leon or I were getting useful answers from the courier company >:(
Given there are no flights from China to NZ at the moment I hope that the courier firm doesn't route it via China :-SS
"Processed at LONDON-HEATHROW - UK" 05:17 Wednesday local time :)

Depends on who is dispatching .....
I've finished checking and I think there might have been 1 figure missed out of over 1,000 (either that or I miss-counted) @-)
Fortunately it was of a type where I ordered a few spare :) :)

The mercenary Gallic Warband in the II/32a Later Carthaginian and II/9a Syracuse in Sicily lists are only solid Warband so are 8 figures per element

First batch of the Iberians were varnished yesterday :)
Hopefully it will be sunny enough this afternoon for picces
First painting rod of shield fronts done @-) :)
Four and a third left to do
I had to read that twice......thought you were talking about the number of armies you have left to finish rather than shields for a moment ;D
;D ;D ;D
I'm not quite that fast ;)
Fourth painting rod of shield fronts done @-) :)
The sun did break through occasionally this afternoon, but never long enough to take pictures :(
Finished painting rod of shield fronts @-) :)
Tunic trim done :)
Started base coating skin :)
Finished base coating skin :) #:-S
For some reason this particular step seemed to be a lot of work :-\
Perhaps the number of figures in this batch, 128
Perhaps the quite 'closed' poses of the Scutarii, particularly the swordsmen
Finished the boots :)
And the sun came out briefly so...

Touch ups done last night :)
Wash done this morning :)
A few moments of concern when I realised that I'm getting near the end of the paint I use for the wash :-SS
I then checked and I do have another full pot #:-S That should last me another couple of projects ;)
I'm also running low on Deck Tan which I use, among other things, for the final dry brush
This wasn't a concern as I remembered noticing I was running low and ordering some more when I ordered some new colours for my ECW project back in 2018, the old one is still running a bit low ;D
Yet more lovely work Paul 8).
Prepared the next army, II/8a Bruttian or Lucanian or II/8c Apulian :)
This included converting 27 pila to spears @-)
No figures appear to have been harmed in the process #:-S
I did buy some spares in case ;)
Only two small blood sacrifices required, I'm now wearing two plasters :-[

This marks the approximate half way point of this project with 5 of the 10 armies painted and based :o
The two Carthaginian armies have a lot of options but I have already painted the Gauls and Spanish scutatii for them
AHA !!
Trying to con me with the old, "I'll hide the photo's on the previous page trick, Eh ?"
Well it didn't work. :P ;)
They look stonking, Paul ! :-bd =D> :-bd
Great work, as always :)

;D ;D ;D
Liking those Paul, really nice bright colours
:-bd lovely work. I really like the basing on these, I'd had my doubts about DBx basing (having mostly seen it in 15mm) looking too sparse but works well with the 10mm.

Crests done :)
Saddle blankets done :)
Boots, sandals, belts and scabbards done :)
That's enough painting for tonight while my brain adjusts to the end of daylight saving time @-)

I'm fortunate to be able to work from home but it was strange working to other people's schedules
I've managed to do some painting today, I did the second side of the bases for this batch :)
I should hopefully get more painting done as I settle back into work
I better as I've ordered my next project, Hundred Years War :D
Good luck

I need to decide on the skin colour for my Carthaginians, there seems to be a lot of 'debate' and not a lot of information online
I've experimented with Vallejo 874 USA Tan Earth highlighted with 843 Cork Brown on these 4 figures
(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49843648093_1d5f42c34e_o.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2iWvJ3Z)
(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49844494572_7c907183e5_o.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2iWA4Fs)
Should I go with this colour or my usual 955 Flat Flesh / 845 Sunny Skin Tone for the bulk of Carthaginians :-\
(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49832615857_05a479032e_o.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2iVxby2)
Should I use 874 USA Tan Earth / 843 Cork Brown for Numdians or something a little darker (My understanding is that they are lighter toned than sub-Saharan Africans) :-\
This should be a simple question but unfortunately can take on unfortunate overtones (pun intended)
There are many who can pass easily for central Europeans. A bit of a tan, of course, but certainly not Tintin-like Africans or anything near them.
Agreed, at 10mm, and 3', flesh looks more or less the same.
Plus, crossing the alps, they would mostly be blue from hypothermia.
Look really good
Leon Please can you lock this thread down, I am desperately trying not to purchase armies for the Punic wars until I have at least finished the un-started Parthians.
This thread is not helping my self resolve ;D ;D
Thanks, I think I'll go with my normal skin tones and reserve the 'tan' for the Numdians

Oilophansts, efferlumps, who gives a crap what you call them, they will stuff my self control completely.
Mrs Orcs once asked me while i was driving to Cumbria for a holiday "wheres your self control". I replied. "I don't have any, that is why I am no longer married and your sitting there"

You can ignore the elephant in the room as long as you want, but remember: elephants
never forget...
Fortunately elephants can't get into my room - they wouldn't be able to negotiate the steps..

Apart from the designs on the shields....I'm struggling. :-\

Lovely work.
The second army have more colourful tunics but the first army are all red.
The skin tones look different between them too but that might just be a trick of the light.
One is red, one is blue?
Great work sir.

Painted the last batch of hexes for coastlines in naval games :)
I now have a gross of 40mm green hexes to form coastlines for our naval games, I got the idea from Pierre the Shy ;)
Sorted out all the armies and they are almost all neatly stored in 4 pizza boxes :)
The elephants are too tall for the pizza boxes but do fit in my normal draws #:-S
So for now they are sharing a draw with some of my First Crusade armies
When I get a sunny day I need to take some more piccies for the army lists and might do some en masse
Next time I'll chop the hefferlumps' legs down....Just for you, Paul. ;)
Cheers - Phil :)
Order a Roman-style thick crust pizza next time; the box should be deeper for that.

You could just model them with their knees bent, then they could be part of that famous ambush in 217BC.
Y'know - Crouching Elephant, Hidden Trasimene.

Included with my Hundred Year War order were the tents for my Roman camps :)
These were out of stock when Leon shipped the Punic War order and we agreed it would make sense to send them with my next order
The tents have been prepared and undercoated :) :)
Tents base coated :)
A couple of dry brushed on the tents :) :)
Details done on the tents :)
Tents washed :)
A few touch ups where the wash 'ponded' on some of the flat surfaces :)
I've been asked to debut these armies at our regular game next Saturday so I better finish the Roman camps :!!
Tents have had their final dry brush :)
Magnetic vinyl glued to the bottom of the bases :)
Photos asap please, it's in-tents!
Camps flocked :)
So near to revealing them, it's tentalising!
This guy is just trying to get us in a flap, generating a spike in interest and driving us up the pole* is obviously his intent ;)

Good stuff
I've been having a look through my spare figures and found that by painting up 6 more elements I can add three more potential armies to my Punic Wars project without buying any more figures :) :)
Adding 2 Cavalry, 3 Light Horse and 1 Spear to my II/5h Siciliot army allows them to cover both II/5d Thessalian & II/5g Italiot :) :)
Adding 3 Light Horse to my II/9a Syracuse in Sicily army allows them to cover II/5g Italiot :)

Good progress :) :) :)
- horses dry brushed
- helmets & armour base coated and dry brushed
