Title: Glasgow Games Gathering - Sat 29th June
Post by: Leon on 18 June 2019, 01:51:39 PM
I'm a bit late popping this up, but our next event is a new addition to the calendar as we head up to Glasgow for the inaugural Glasgow Games Gathering!  Taking place in Bellahouston Park, we're hoping for a good turnout to this new event.  The old Glasgow shows were always good days out, so have a browse of what's on offer here: https://www.g3gamers.co.uk/

We'll need your pre-orders sending through by midnight on Friday 21st please.

Looking forward to dropping by and saying hello.

It's been 3 years since the last show in Glasgow.
I believe the schedule was disrupted by the Commonwealth games, and never quite got back on an even keep after that.
I hope this is a roaring success and becomes a regular event.

My order placed.
I shall doubtless discover various other stuff I "need" while there.

Were you guys involved in the Great Game at the University?

We weren't, probably a bit small for what they were doing but imagine a Waterloo game of that size with 10mm figures!  We could have had 100,000 figures on the table!

Would certainly be an incentive to get the range sculpted 100000/30=3333.333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333 (Oh you get the point) packs x 4.95 = 16500 And all of Pendraken's production capacity for 36 hours. .

If only!  It'd be around 220 hours for that many packs

I might pop along with a mate or two assuming I can get the car parked near enough to walk up.

We always feel that it is correct to support local shows whenever they pop up.

Might still get down to Penrith the day after as we see that as a local show too (from Edinburgh).

Nice show, with a good mix of figures games and board games.

Took lots of photo's (Yay!) of which 60% or so were out of focus (Doh!)

Spent twice as much getting there and back as I did at the show but had a nice day out with many conversations with friends old and new.

Must find somewhere other than FB to put the piccies up so people can see them.

I briefly attended the show around about the mid-day mark. I wasn't sure how to gauge the attendance. Unsurprisingly, not as big as Claymore or Falkirk and many trader's stands were devoid of customers when I was there (for example, I spent some time at the Eagle Miniatures stand - it was only me and the owner - real shame because they are beautiful figures and I don't collect 28mm). That's not to say there were not a lot of attendees, however; it's just that a good number were on the periphery of the hall playing (what was it?) competition games(?). Bearing in mind, I was there at lunchtime (and so I may have missed the 'busy' period), in the final reckoning, only the traders and organisers can say how successful or otherwise it was.

Spoke at length to Steve Holmes and 'the guy' from Gourock War-games Club who had put on an AWI game using Picquet Cartouche (sorry, forget his name, even though I have often conversed with him at shows over the years  :-[ ). Also picked up my purchases (and bought some more) at the Pendraken stand and said hello to Jim (Duncan) who was absorbed in conversation with someone (and whom I lost sight of thereafter). Even though I wrote out a list, I somehow managed to miss out black paint and came away with other colours that were not on the list. I also wondered if Ithoriel would make it considering the location of the show for using public transport to and from (well done, Mike) but didn't see him (kept looking out for someone falling over but nothing untoward spotted). Unfortunately I couldn't hang about because I had a friend's 60th birthday party to go to (which was good, btw  <:-P ).

Even with the high number of duds I have 69 images to post ...  and life is short!

Was there as part of the FDWC Boxer game. It looked like a promising start though it was hard to assess numbers. Very warm in the hall (no surprise given the weather.)

Three or four photos would give us a taster of the event.

Enjoyed the show.

Met up with my pal Hugh and his son Andrew just before doors open.
Quite a selection of board and figure games.
Since figure games just don't grab me (Grown men playing games - Pah!!), that cut out perhaps 30% of the trade and games.

I'd been out in the sun scarifying the lawn the day before, had slept fitfully was quite sunburned and prone to spontaneous sweating attacks.
Hence attending in T-shirt and shorts.
I was glad of this decision once I got inside.
The room was very hot (Previous day being the hottest of the year) - Can't blame the organisers for that.
On the plus side, lighting was excellent and there was plenty of space.

I blew about a quarter year's budget on 15mm supplies, Pendraken and Supreme Littleness Designs.
Some figures, a lot of terrain (I live the smell of burning MDF in the morning).

Speaking of hats, they were in evidence at several of the participation games.
There was a gentleman wearing a flamboyant Tricorne.

We participated in 2 games:

Pancho Villa's boys (Myself and Andrew) raided an American gold reserve.
Wonderful sombreros were provided for the Villista players.
The rules were a cut down version of Bolt Action, and the game was very well refereed.
We got the gold, but lost the bulk of our troops.

The other was a GI Joe scenario using the Song of Blades and heroes rules.
The game seemed well organised, but each character had so many special abilities that it was tricky to figure out strengths and weaknesses on a first time play through.

I bumped into Westmarcher while embroiled in the later game, and didn't have anything like enough time for a proper chat.

Downsides: Mainly personal.

a) Much too hot, I bailed out about 90 minutes before the end.
b) Didn't find a mass of things of interest - 28mm dominating (See the ever popular "State of the hobby") thread.
One wonders about the viability of 2 or 3 Warlord re-sellers attending a show when Warlord are also there.
c) Didn't get quite the chat time I'd hoped for with the various traders - see point a).

Finally: I don't know how well the traders did.
The place seemed sparely attended compared to Carronade.
I hope it was a worthwhile day's work for all the traders, since the hobby would be a poor place without them.

Thanks to Pendraken for attending and having my order ready to roll.
I hope it was a worthwhile day out.

I'm sorry we didn't get a chance to chat Westie, catch me at Claymore.

Bought some resin from Warbases and some paint brushes from the paint brush trader.

We left at lunchtime as one of us had to be back in Edinburgh for 2pm.

Didn't see Ithoriel so never had the chance to be fallen on.

It was a low footfall show perhaps because of the low level of advertising. Hope they try and do better next year.

I got down to the Penrith show on the Sunday, saw a few of the same guys from Glasgow, bought some paint that I could have bought on the Saturday and some plastic figures that I didn't see on Saturday. Home in time to miss the start of the Austrian GP then fell asleep and missed the finish. Apparently the most interesting race of the season so far. Got it on video.

Next show is Claymore so see you all there.

The traders I spoke to seemed happy with the day. Not huge takings but enough to make it worth coming back next year. Expectations on that front seem to have been low, given it was first time round for both show and venue.

I didn't arrive until  somewhere between 12:30 and 1pm. Sorry to have missed folk - I may see you at Claymore ... unless you spot me first :)

You are much less likely to be collapsed upon these days, though recurring nosebleeds are more of a problem.

I got some scenery from IGS, some MDF bits and pieces from Supreme Littleness, some decals from Pendraken and arranged to get a few figures from Gyrdan.

When I left the show the thunderstorm was just starting and three of us stepped out into the rain to cool off and wash away some of the sweat! Though we jumped back under cover sharpish with the first rumbles of thunder.

For a first event it went OK.  Sales weren't great at all, probably one of our lowest of the past 10 years, but we didn't go with high targets due to it being a new event.  The venue was accessible and looked to be good from a visitor perspective.  From the trader side the access wasn't great on the Friday and I think those who set up on Saturday morning found it hard going.  Closing down was a bit better as we were able to get a secondary fire exit opened and loaded through that instead.

The club put a lot of effort into it though, so we can't be too negative about the event.  They'd done a lot of advertising on social media, they had free drinks/snacks available for the traders on Friday night, and there was an 'involvement' promotion where the visitors could collect stickers from purchases/playing games that then entered them into a prize draw at the end of the day.

For next year, I think getting the other access doors open on the Friday would be good, a bit more advertising through different methods and maybe a few changes to the trader line-up.

The room was very hot (Previous day being the hottest of the year) - Can't blame the organisers for that.

Definitely, it was ridiculously hot on the Friday while we were setting up, but it's not something I can pin on the organisers!
