Why is it in this hobby nothing is simple :)
I decided that my BEF army was too large at nearly 7000pts, so I split it to create an early desert war force. Of course I didn't have enough command bases so I needed to place an order for more. Then after ripping the figures off their bases I discovered that I didn't have any of the ones that I used previously. No problem, I can use slightly larger ones, 30x40 rather than 20x30, they'll mix in fine I said. Then I decided I liked the look so much I needed to rebase all my armies, German, Russian and French, another order placed for more bases.
I now have another "problem", who can the Brits fight in the desert? I think an Italian order is in the pipeline...

Not only there. Just had to rebase some figures onto Impetus 'half-size' bases so that I can play Furioso with the same armies.
Going through project boxes recently made me realise that I've ordered so much 'stuff' that I can't honestly remember why, as it was so long ago. Luckily I've made the conscious decision to pretty much play re-inforced Battalion size games on a 4' x 4' table, with the odd foray onto a 6' x 4' one. No longer the planned 3 Battalions per side!
Rebasing, best avoided at almost all costs.
I found my earlier days in the hobby saw a scattergun aproach to purchasing.
Part of this was restricted funds, meaning i could rarely justify a full purchase.
Another factor was that the order mechanism involved writing a letter to an address in Miniature Wargames magazine.
Sometimes waiting for the printed catalogue to be delivered - unless the company placed their catalogue in a full-page advert.
Then another letter to state the order's contents - sometimes with a third letter where terms of postage and packing were vague.
The whole process was slow, tenuous and didn't lend itself to shopping around to fill out an army list.
Another problem was a lack of a settled set of rules.
Let's face it, most rules from over 2 decades ago left a lot to be desired.
We got a game, but they were either very hard work (to learn and play) or rather lacking as a gaming experience.
My opinion (strictly my own) is that improvement in rules has reduced my tendency to "project hop".
A few years back I decided to impose some discipline on my purchases - something I've mostly adhered to, though succumbing to a cheeky new purchase quite recently.
Things are a generally a lot more stable, but I attribute much of this to having fund rules that I'm quite content with.
I have avoided the re-basing problem in a very simple way .... I don't re-base I buy whole new armies.
Which is why, for example, I have WW2 Eastern Front forces in 2mm, 3mm, 6mm, 10mm, 15mm, 20mm and 28mm.
Much of them unpainted.

I managed to get away recently with just rebasing some of a Leidang 28mm army that I was left after one of my best friends past on a few years ago.
Rob used to play a lot of DBM in the 2000's and the Leidang army list had a lot of bow armed Psiloi with 2 figures on a 40x20 base as well as double ranked Knight wedges. We have been playing a bit of DBMM lately (love them or hate them they are the very popular choice ancient/medieval rules in NZ using 25/8 mm figures). DBMM changed the Leidang army list significantly and the Psiloi became Bondi Archers with 3 figures on a 40 x 20 base. So I converted some 20 stands of Psiloi to Bows by soaking 10 Psiloi stands to get the figures off their stands and using a dremmel to create a hole in the gravel and static grass in the bases of 20 other Psiloi stands large enough to fit the base of a third figure. Then it was just a matter of gluing the extra figure in and flocking round it to match the existing base.
Done in an evening and I still have all 10 fingers intact ;)
Of course the first time we played with them the Leidang got comprehensively creamed :-[
The knight wedges proved a bit more challenging to remove from their bases but are slowly being rebased as Medieval German allies and I have enough existing 12th Century spear and xbow troops to field an allied command which can give the army a few different configuration options. The Leidang figures are all OG and the local club does have an 40% off "army" deal with the manufacturer but even so the cost of buying more 28mm figures is astronomical compared to 10mm so I won't be investing in any further 28mm figures.

I re-based my 6m Volley and Bayonet 3-inch square based forces (FPW and ACW) onto 30mm square bases. This had the effect of a four-fold increase in forces (on 3-inch base broke down to 4 smaller bases). I like the idea so much I built a Napoleonic 1st Empire set of forces. Re-basing always means buying more. Is that why Pendraken offer bases as well as figures :-X

I've just realised I'm a couple of command figures short of finishing my current batch of ECW units...a week after I'd already got a small order in. And if I go to order them now I'll have to add some more bits in to make the postage worthwhile and before you know it... I just have to try and hold off a month or two... :-SS
Don't know how I did it but I have held off for two months, but should be able to place an order tomorrow, then it will be another two or three before finishing the project mountain - a lot longer still to paint the beggars!

There is a simple answer to this problem.......give Leon your credit card and tell him to sent you random stuff every month until you have an army in every era/nationality Pendraken produce (or you run out of space in your house). ;D
