Title: Anyone Read Wargames Illustrated?
Post by: bigjackmac on 14 April 2019, 04:44:40 PM
Took the kiddos to the bookstore last night and picked up issue #377, March 2019.  I've bought maybe one or two others before.  Anyway, I'm flipping through and get to page 61;

top right corner.

I'm thinking, 'man, those look familiar.'  And they are!  They're from my blog!

A West German:

And the other West German, though they reversed the pic:

Pretty damn cool to have my stuff in a magazine, I just wish they'd have let me know (how crazy is it that I chose to buy the one my stuff is in, or have they been doing it for awhile? Doubtful...), and it would have been kinda cool if they actually credited me for the photos.

V/R,
Jack

You could post their email address here and anyone from here could comment in support or otherwise.

Thanks Lemmey, and thanks to you as well, Jim!  I appreciate you laying out an option, but I'm not really trying to stir a movement or anything.  I actually just thought it was pretty cool that my stuff was deemed good enough to make it into a magazine, and would have been even cooler if they'd have said "and these are Jack's, from his Blackhawkhet blog," or something along those lines.

V/R,
Jack

That must have been a bit a of surprise Jack.....albeit a very pleasant one  8) Though at the very least they should acknowledge your blog as the source of the pictures.

I had a somewhat similar experience a few years ago - Many years ago (2001) I wrote several articles about Charles the Bold's 3 main battles against the Swiss in our local club magazine ("Dispatches" which is long gone). However a few years later I was looking up some stuff about the Battle of Nancy on Wikipedia and reading their article the wording sounded very familiar...sure enough some nice Anon had cut and pasted most of my article into the Wiki without any acknowledgement.

I did contact Wiki over this and eventually got them to at least confirm that the wording of my article was used as a basis for the entry although they never put it as a source since the Anon had edited the entry rather than used it as a straight cut and paste....my contribution to the WWW  ;)

A few years ago a good friend asked for permission to use one of my blog photos on his blog and of course I said yes as long as you credit me. The photo was posted with a credit.

A few weeks later I spied the same photos on a well known historians blog with no credit. I emailed him and asked him to credit me for the photos. He went almost ballistic, accused me of calling him a pirate and took down the photos. All I wanted was a credit.

Congratulations on making it into print Jack :-bd

There are some very strange attitudes out there once something has been put on the www :-/

Credit where credit is due is what I say.

Bigjackmac, write a polite e-mail to Wargames Illustrated. Jim - you're quite right, imo.

Wargames Illustrated is an eye candy magazine, so it is nice to see your photos make it to their pages.

That aside,

There is the irony that WI work in the world of protected copyright and one assumes they would stand up to protect their own copyright.

Pierre - "That must have been a bit a of surprise Jack....."
Yeah man, it was one of those things where I looked at it, cocked my head a bit, looked at it a bit more, then the light bulb came on.  Your Wikipedia adventure kinda sucks, sounds like you put a lot work into the three battles.

Jim - I'm with you, just wanted to see my name up in lights.  That was as close to 15 minutes of fame as I'll ever get ;)

Paul - Thanks man, and definitely.

Westmarcher - I just may send that email, we'll see.

Norm - Yeah, I didn't figure anything I'd done could possibly be construed (or misconstrued) as 'eye candy'! ;)

Thanks everyone for weighing in.  Just bought BKC IV and looking to see if I can actually get a game in here in the near future.

V/R,
Jack

Good to see your figures being used but a little naughty of them to not be crediting the owner of the images.  I think if you'd copied their latest articles and content onto your blog that you'd have had an email asking for it to be taken down, so that has to work both ways.  I'd drop them a polite email just asking that they credit you / your blog if they use any more of your images in future.

I'll third that !

Same thing has happened to me a few times. Usually I get a credit for the painting or the photo....other times I don't.
I have contacted the 'posters' on a few occasions and have normally got a polite reply....Or no answer.

That's life, I guess.....But as that was Jack's 'first'....I'd feel a little bit miffed.
I can remember how really chuffed I was when I had my first piccy published in WD...and with a credit. Like Jack, I didn't know it was going to appear in the magazine.

Yes, Jack....Go with Leon's advice.  :)

Cheers - Phil

If there's one thing I know about Pirates, it's that they hate being called Pirates.

You could have riposted with something like "Not exactly a pirate sir, more a freebooter".

There's a certain Irony here.
The Internet is in the process of replacing the dead tree as our primary means of communication.
Meanwhile the last generations of dead tree writers happily plunder the Internet for content.

I think you're confusing Villum Schwarzenegger him with his brother, Arnold.

Hey guys,

Sorry, was away for a couple days of 'real life.'  In any case, I appreciate all the support, and wanted to update you.  So, being busy and a slacker, I didn't send Wargames Illustrated an email, but one of my buddies did, and they've replied.  They said it was a mistake, which I figured and is no problem on my end, and they have offered me a free year's subscription, which seems very generous.

So all's well that ends well, I just need to talk them into using some more pics of mine and actually put my blog name in the magazine, count it as my fifteen minutes of fame ;)

Now to hopefully get some actual wargaming in!

V/R,
Jack
