Title: Winter Roads Scenery etc.
Post by: Heedless Horseman on 27 January 2019, 01:46:20 AM
Having bought some excellent rubberised roads from various vendors in the past, (mainly on ebay)...but always for the normal , 'summer' battlefield....does anyone know of a supplier of WINTER roads...or rivers? Thinking of 'frosted' verges, iced puddles/ruts...or even just snow and muddy tracks!
Could TRY to paint up 'summer' stuff...but maybe a pro might have some top class products available, somewhere?

The problem is, 'winter' battlemats tent to be all snow. You could just spray a road white...(expensive!)...or just ignore it! But, for 'wintery'  conditions with melted areas, drfts ...or just frost...there is very little stuff available...from what I can see.

I have just ordered a 'new' tundra mat form Deepcut...but it looks like snow with some dead veg from the pics. I wish there was a product which would allow vehicles and figure bases to 'look' right without being in 'total' winter white cammo. You can't do  very much in deep snow/arctic conditions!

It would be worth asking some of the suppliers of roads etc on eBay if they do winterised options. I think several of them will do custom pieces, they just don't list them on eBay.

The temporary option would be to use snow flock (or other white crystals) to scatter on standard terrain pieces to make them a bit snowy. May be a bit messy to tidy up at the end of the game though!

Timecast do a lovely range of rubber roads which are unpainted so can be made appropriate for any season. Their range of rubber scenery is wonderful and very reasonably priced.

Thanks Chaps. An update.

On ebay, 'Fat Frank' (who does rubber roads) has kindly offered to winterise a section and will send me pics.  :) :) :)

The Deepcut Studio 'Tundra V.2' is a very nice mat...but a little TOO wintery for what I envisioned. This could be changed, however, with scenic features etc. (Or even dusted with some flock...but that would be very messy, so probably wouldn't bother). Deepcut do some very good stuff...and they have a new version of a 'deserty/badlands' mat which is VERY nice. Ordering the older stuff has become fiddly, however...but worth it if you want a particular battlefield from back-catalogue.  :) :)

I have also purchased a 'Winter' mat from Tiny Wargames, (a U.K co.). Now, this is a bit smaller than what I was looking for...and has a dirt road, tracks and a river printed in...so is less utilitarian in scope...but, I rather like it. Being cloth,  terrain height can easily be altered and trees/buildings, etc. can be changed ...along with the armies ...or even the period...so it could be a nice little battlemat. This was actually on ebay from Tiny Wargames...with an 'Offer' function...and they kindly accepted £10 less than asking price!!! I DO rather like this mat!  ;) ;) ;) Thanks, Tiny Wargames  :) :) :)
