Hello everyone,
Here I'd like to represent my current painted and varnished miniatures for my pimped out board game which plays with RISK rules. I've got WIP 100mm hexes ready to be flocked which will form the gameboard for troop movement, pictures will follow as soon as I get them finished.
I'm going to paint new armies for each human faction as I was not satisfied with the quality of the miniatures I bought from Magister Militum, but now I've got a bunch of Pendrakens and TB lines miniatures which share a similiar style and quality that I will be adding and expanding to the "fantasy world" I created. Also working to give each faction a different looking units to add more flavor.
Sorry for the bad quality on some of the pictures.

These look amazing!
The Copplestone stuff especially.
Love your figures and ideas! The pics are fine and give sufficient detail to see how you are "theming" each army. Will be interested to see how all this develops. Oh! Welcome to the forum! :-bd
Hi, I assume it's not the standard size board ?
Quite a remarkable set up there. Nicely done =D> =D> =D>
Exceptional. I too am interested in hte size of the board. I also notice some bases for the figures seem bigger than others and wonder how that works in the game?
Terry
I'm glad you guys enjoy my work!
Here's a few previews of the hex map. The pieces are still WIP and lack some flock. We're currently beta testing the system. And the map will have a mat below with water with hex grid. Also the hexes have furniture protectors under them so thats why the hexes look like levitating.

Hello, welcome and good effort!
:-bd =D> :-bd =D>
Simply wonderful work 8)
Wow.
That's an amazing setup!
Cool, a really good looking set of figures.
As you say, adding a bit more flock to the hexes should lift the look of the whole game, at the minute the brown is quite dark.

Currently the bases serve no other purpose, other than having enough space to hold the minis. But I'm looking into some skirmish based wargame system where I could use the minis aswell.
Especially as I start to replace a lot of the miniatures from the board game with new ones, I'll be left with vast amounts of excess armies that could be employed elsewhere.
I actually had all the human armies single based and painted before, but decided to rebase them into bigger units and paint them with a higher standard all over again. What a pain in the ass.
I'm open to suggestion regarding some light and fast rulesets that we might be able to modify for the miniatures available.
And all this started from playing some RISK with my board gaming group as I wanted to add some extra immersion. I got addicted pretty quickly.
Lion Rampant is very flexible as to basing.
I don't think there are many games that are faster to play.
Or the Fantasy version, Dragon Rampant.
I'm well impressed with those !!
Great work....Love your ideas, too.
Cheers - Phil
Not a fan of hexes but look excellent.
Glad you like these!
I'm waiting for a bunch of standard bearers and more "commander" figures to make command squads with a leader, std bearer and a normal footsoldier. Commanders can be captured and ransomed back to other players.

This is the fourth mini, if I'm not mistaken this fella and the guy with a huge plume come from the kings pack. And the slightly less plumed one and the plain armor are from the commander pack. Excellent miniatures, with a lot of detail.

Thanks everyone! The slashes on the shields are completely random and apparently come from the mold those are cast in, they do look battle worn though!

Thanks everyone for your kind comments, got Adolf finished but sadly didn't take a photograph.
We are still working on the rules, but you are able to expand without leaving units on the original territory, every player starts with 3 base tiles that each generate 3gold per Taxation. Tiles with neutral houses provide increased tax gold aswell.
You can maneuver your forces through tiles you do not control as long as there are no enemy units in adjacent territories.
As I'm making more forces for each faction, they will be having infantry split into 4 and 2 man bases. Uneven numbers after a battle are rounded up.
Also I'm thinking about giving infantry a dice in the ranked attack order so that they will inflict casualities on either a 5 or 6. Just because in RISK durope, infantry serves no other purpose other than cannon fodder.
Victory conditions in our games would be to control a few certain territories on the map, or similiar.
I'll eventually write everything down for reference and I'll keep you posted. :)
Thank You.
I can't wait for Your version of game any more :'(

It seems like it is an endless journey to get the game "finished" but everything is ready for the time being, just replacing old units with better sculpts and adding more versatility to troop numbers.
Buildings are indeed glued on the bases, but there will be a lot of extra hexes to use so you'll be seeing a different kind of battlefield everytime you play.
The trees are actually from Aliexpress/Alibaba? Also using Wish for some bigger trees. It was 17euros for 100 trees, different heights from 3cm to 5cm.
You raise a valid point on the traffic jam, I'm looking into restricting the movement. It might even add a new tactical depth in strategic unit placement! With restrictions on movement, you could "aid" your troops from adjacent hexes?

Heya! I've made some progress regarding flags and units for the Red and Blue factions.
Probably need to revisit those flags as I painted them a little bit.

Happy Yule and New Year folks!
My sisters better half is from England, and he was intrigued by my hobbies regarding miniatures. So I made him a small present, it's a small porceline cup with a wooden lid that I added my diorama on to.

Here I've got some TB line Eastern European Infantry. I've already got Blue/white, Red/white schemed armies. And decided to try out if Green and Black would work for the green player pieces. But I'm really conflicted, and feel like without a second opinion I might be in the wrong.
So the question is, do you guys think the green and black combination might work for the whole army? I just feel like the miniatures are quite dark.

For what it's worth I've always quite liked the black and green combination as a colour scheme. If you're concerned about it being too dark you could try going a shade or two lighter on the green to really make it stand out?
I remember you had a picture of a black and yellow scheme which was quite stand out. It would balance quite nicely having the blue/white, red/white, green/black, yellow/black.
I tend to use a dark grey rather than black with mid grey highlights... that might help lighten the figures as well
They look good to me
Take care
Andy
Damn fine work ! :)
Cheers - Phil
Really great work 8)
I really like the black and green combination as well. I know it doesn't jump out as much as yellow/purple or blue/white does but they still look really nice. As the others have said, maybe a slightly lighter green highlight or a grey over the black might lift them slightly but I like them as they are.
I agree with mmcv, lighting the green shade might help. Green clothing against green basing doesn't give enough contrast imho. Your painting on figures is so good it is a shame to bury it in the background.
Hey!
Here's a few close-ups from the Crowmoor troops, I went through the black with a really dark grey like you guys suggested. The original photos might've been slightly dark to begin with. What do you think?

Also, I started to experiment with the flesh tone. Earlier I had basecoated the skin areas with a dark skin tone, but felt it came out pretty flat even with a wash and a highlight. So now I've started to basecoat the skin in brown like many others, and feel like this is the best way to go with these.

Hehe, aye.
I redid all the flags I had previously done. And this time I cut the flags freehand, and also decided it was better to just paint the flags from the beginning. Instead of using printed colours. Here I tried to do "wheat" icon on the flag, as Leffenstein is renowned from their top quality Wheat Beer.
I have to but admire people who can paint pictures freehand, such a battle it was to even get these dots on the flag.

Hey Phil,
Do you have any tips or tricks regarding flags? At the moment my work order goes like this ->
- Cut the flag (mirror the sides)
- Apply PVA on the inside -> insert flag on the pole (try to get the both sides aligned)
- Apply PVA on the outside to protect the paper from the future and to make a surface to paint on ( Thin coat )
- Paint
Atte. :)
I've actually painted about a whole three figures in the last 15 years. X_X
Though, I don't know how many of the little men I've 'sculpted' in that time....I've completely lost count.
Flags ?
Hmmmm.....
First of all I'd see if Leon had anything appropriate in the Minibits section..(I bet he has !!)..Because that would be better than anything I could do 'freehand'.
If not.....I'd paint something a good few times bigger than I want.
Photo it, and put on the computer.
'Flop' it on the PC, so I had a mirror image.....Now I've got both sides.
Reduce.....and print.
Then use your PVA 'tricks'.
You won't have to apply any paint then.
I hope that makes sense......I also hope that someone who 'does' flags will jump in to give you proper advice !! ;)
Cheers - Phil
I definitely second printed flags
The only paint I then neeed to apply is to the edges to hide the white paper ;)
You can always over paint printed flags (plenty of free downloads out there), using them as a guide. I think they look better painted than printed, bit it's a matter of how much time and effort you want to put in. I'vve seen over scaled flags on many figures to make them stand out more, which might help?

I think that painting over print is an excellent idea! How come it did not cross my mind at all.
Also, could you point me in the right direction with the free sources available online? For flags.

Okay!
I made some progress on my renewed Medieval world. Here's some images of its inhabitants. (Wanted to up the painting standard on these aswell).
How do you like the bases? I went all in and hope I can continue with this scheme till the very end. Should I get some darker bushes?
We came up with the names for the following factions from beverages.
Factions are as follows: Crowmoor = Orange/Green
Leffenstein = Blue/white
Spatendorf = Red/white
Somersby = Yellow/Black

I think the bases look great as they are, darker bushes would add more contrast but may distract from the great painting :) ;)
I tend to search for images of the flag I want and copy it into MS Paint to fiddle with. I tend to work on oversize images and scale down when printing
Sometimes I'll wash flags, before cutting out and gluing, to make them look a bit more natural. I've also added battle damge to some of my AWI flags
This site has quite a few flags simply drawn http://tmg110.tripod.com/warflags.htm (http://tmg110.tripod.com/warflags.htm)

Managed to finish a Cart for the Crowmoor faction (Propably going to be used as markers of some sort)
(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/48325348962_1a860cd5df.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2gCm3BL)15 (https://flic.kr/p/2gCm3BL) by Atte (https://www.flickr.com/photos/160660234@N05/), on Flickr
Finished a couple of buildings from battlescale and improved the Wayside Cross. One of the buildings was without sculpted vegetation so I added some of my Woodland scenic bushes.

Just love everything you've done with these 8).
These are seriously good. Just wondered where the buildings are from
as they compliment the figures well ?
Phil
Like always, thank you everyone for taking the time to comment!

Hey Glorfindel!
The buildings are all 6mm Battlescale. (I've been thinking about trying out some 10mm buildings, but I guess they get quite a lot bigger compared to the 6mm stuff.

Here's what 10mm with 10mm look like.

Those look great! And the buildings don't look too big at all.
Those are Timecast 10mm buildings, courtesy of Liverpool Wargames Association. Timecast do a lot of their buildings in two or three different scales.

Today I got some troops done for Leffenstein. Also a couple of Monks bickering against 14th century knights.

Thank you guys!
I designed custom cards to go with the game. (You have 8 cards, and you play 2 cards at your turn, the round ends when all players have played their 8 Cards. RISK-Europe Rules)
And ordered those from Printerstudio.de (Shame they did not have english translation on their site, but I think I managed)
A few samples.

Love those gnomes
Alrighty chaps!
I had to take some time off the Krieg 1919 map I was making as you guys suggested. I had my neighbour who is part of our boardgaming group come over and help me out with the map. And It came out alright, just need to put some thought on the bush and forest placement.
Anyway I made some more scenery and got some reinforcements ready for the Spatendorf Empire! Also painted a couple of lowly peasants for fun, from which the more colourful bunch are part of the Lordship of Crowmoor.
On the ruined building I added some Woodland Scenic bushes to give some contrast.

Got some more Battlescale Scenery done, really love these casts as those are crisp and without bubbles. + Extremely professionally made detail.
Recently I've been experimenting with some tile painting techniques, and for these I've dabbed every single tile invidually with a highlight. Time consuming but gives nice results.

I'm glad you guys enjoyed those buildings!
I can not stress this enough = Battlescale has to be the best bang for your buck out there.
I just finished up some Perfect Six Scenics items, 2 Watchtowers, 1 Ruin, 2 Wells and 4 rock golems.
First of all, if you compare the Towers resin casting quality to Battlescale, these are riddled with bubbles when Battlescale has zero (Couldn't bother to clean them up, THERE WERE SO MANY!). However, very nice sculpts and their metal casts are great.

Lovely work as always.
I do enjoy the odd wheat beer, though tend to prefer ales as my go to libation.
Then of course there's a lot to be said for a nice bottle of wine over dinner, with a port or a wee snifter of brandy afterwards.
Then of course a dram of a peaty single malt scotch as a nightcap...
Why am I suddenly thirsty?
P.S. This is not in any way a reflection of my actual daily drinking habits lest you think I'm some sort of Churchill/Hemingway aspirant!
VERY nice again, Atte !! :-bd
Cheers - Phil
Got some Archers and Officers done for Crowmoor today.
Going forward I'm going to attach a noble that has his own heraldic colours on to the command stands, which serve as representing a vassal to the corresponding realm. (And to bring more colour to the mix)

Lovely figures!
Superb as ever
Thank you guys!
I managed to paint some Laran and Polar Fox miniatures. I gave in to the impulses and ordered a hefty bunch of these to act as special characters and such. (Sorry Ithoriel for initially refusing your suggestions)
So here we have necromancers, wizards, sorceresses, lords on griffons, witch hunters with their dimwitted servants and so on!
(I screwed up the Blue Lords base and had to make it a heavily bushy area)
Also painting yellow is a pain, hence why I'm looking for a decent yellow. Army Painter yellow hardly even covers over white basecoat...

Yellows are a pain, a second coat of yellow over the white may help
Alternatively use a tan, orange or similar as your base coat to give more depth to the yellow...
Those a bl**dy lovely!!!
I've just paintd some yellow tonight and Vallejo Yellow Ochre works a treat, even over black basecoat.
Holy tamoly those are amazing.
Vallejo flat yellow usually works in two coats (and smells slightly of bananas).
WOW !!! :-bd =D> :-bd =D> :-bd

Lovely work!
Curious about the Laran miniatures scale wise - do they work ok alongside Pendraken figures? I'd considered getting the "Bravados" as Empire Free Company/Militia but they looked quite bulky and I thought they'd be too big?

I got a pack of bravados pirates, and the size difference is noticeable. As you said, they are bulkier and slightly taller than pendraken miniatures.
I will provide pictures later on today.
Maybe living life as a freeman beholden to none save coin means you get enough calories and nutrition to grow that bit taller and better muscled than the ground down peasants and serfs under the yoke of tyranny of the lords and masters?
Worked for the Swiss, Danes, Swedes, Norwegians and Dutch, anyway :D

So sorry for the late reply! Been occupied with our two new kittens we got, so I totally forgot to check back with you.
I have to apologize, as my memory served me wrong. These are actually rather compatible! The Pendraken miniatures are from the late medieval line. [EDIT:] Under a closer inspection the Bravados are slightly taller!

Sorry for the bad pictures, just threw something quickly together to showcase all kinds of parts which are included in the world.
That looks superb!
Nicely done on, well, everything :)
Great job on the water effect in particular.
That board is very impressive! Not sure the ground needs "improved" to be honest, I think it works well as is.
To me, the bravados fit well with the GW Warmaster figures and with Pendraken's fantasy stuff and are a little bigger than the historical stuff but not outrageously so.
Really looks excellent, Atte. :-bd
Cheers - Phil
IMHO that board is perfect!

No problem! Thanks for the images! They do indeed appear to scale fairly well, at least by my standards - I have those Pendraken minis so I get a good sense of the comparison in size. I was more concerned about the Bravados being overly chunky than the height, which is not too bad and if I need to I can correct it a bit by trimming the bottom of the feet slightly (I tend to put a lot of grass and stuff round the feet anyway so it won't get noticed!)
Thanks again! Lovely board as well :)
An alternative to deal with height is to add a shim under the Pendraken figures to make them taller ;)
I did this when mixing League of Augsburg and ECW officers on the same base
Kittens are a worthy excuse for anything at all.
Methinks you be a tad biased !
I agree with the others that it looks pretty damned good as is 8).
I so agree, it looks awesome!!!

Very nice!
Be interested to hear what you think of Root. Have considered getting it myself at some point, though as most of my board gaming friends now live further away and have young children not sure when I'd actually get to play it.
I've played a few games of ROOT and enjoyed them whether I did well or not.
We used the added players expansion as well.
I like the asymmetry of play.
Don't let the "Tales of the Riverbank" theme put you off. Some skill, a little luck and the unwitting assistance of your opponents is required.
Cool
:-bd =D> :-bd
Yeah! Really excited about this game, also kickstarter backed their other project called Oath: Chronicles of Empire and Exile.
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/2074786394/oath-chronicles-of-empire-and-exile
In Oath, after every game you need to write up the "story" that you just played. And in the next game the story from the earlier game will affect the board.
@Mmcv: There's a refined player bots Expansion for Root (The Clockwork Expansion). Where you can go and add any number of "AI" opponents. Also I've heard the game works alright in 1 v 1 if you play the high "reach" factions (The most Militant ones).
@Ithoriel: I suppose Root is best when players are yet to learn the game, as I've heard it gets rather stale when everyone is just going for the "meta" strategies? So hope we'll stay newbies for a good while! (I also bought all the expansions so that we can add more races to the mix to keep the gameplay loop fresh and exciting)

In non-Covid times there were five or six of us. All buying games regularly. If you played a game more than a couple of times it was something spectacular. Stale wasn't a problem :)

If you're after a good fun fantasy Mini's game (That isn't Pendraken's also excellent Wsrband!) try Oathmark from Joe Mc - I'm currently playing in 10mm, using 80mm unit bases, 1" = 1.5cm and tracking casualties instead of figure removal.
It's a fairly gritty sort of fantasy Dark Age setting with racially/culturally mixed up kingdoms so you can have Patrician style Elves ruling masses of Orc-Goblin foederiti, expansionist Human armies with dwarf mercenary's & goblin wolf rider scouts etc.
Quoth the raven :P

Also, was able to finish something and slowly trying to get my inspiration back! I keep getting these new project ideas but wish I could finish everything I've got going first. So decided I might delve back into the medieval setting and do these first and then get the WW2 stuff done. Really would like to do a small 6mm skirmish game with the hexagons that I scrapped a while back.
Got the Mercenary Crossbowmen done!

QuoteI keep getting these new project ideas but wish I could finish everything I've got going first.
Always the danger! I've packed away all but 6 of my projects which fit into a stack of A4 plastic boxes (getting the house ready to sell) and that's limiting me from starting any new ones. So if I get any time to paint over the next month or two (unlikely) I can focus on finishing up ongoing ones and file new ideas away for future consideration. At least this is what I'm telling myself...
Very nice
Cracking, like the yellow & purple - striking combo :)
And hope you enjoy Oathmark - technically it's 28mm figure remover; I've been playing in 10mm with
unit bases :D
I love your work, it is very inspiring!

Thank you so much guys! I'll try to blast through this now. As I just made an order for a lot of 15mm figs for a dungeon crawler type of adventure. So really need to get stuff done before I can have a go at those!!!
Today 25 more markers for Carrot Kingdom done. All 4 factions now have 30 infantry markers ready. Still have to do around 40 Archer stacks.

Now that you mention it, those guys certainly do sport a rather irish palette of colours! Had not even thought about that. I'm just careful about not using our arch enemys IKEA colours!
Definitely not, their crossbows and bolts would come flat packed, then fall apart in the rain due to being about 90% cardboard...

Got the red players final infantry pieces done, and also finished up the pegasus knights I had painted up a while ago. The infantry is done with dark brown basecoat, and the pegasi are medium brown undercoat. Which clearly shows how much superior a darker basecoat is defining the lines on a miniature.

Thank you Phil! I wonder what happened to your account?
Entirely my fault, Atte. X_X X_X X_X
I pressed a button, that I shouldn't have....trying to stop myself from looking at the forum for a while, so I could have a decent break ;D ;D ;D ;D
I completely deleted the original 'Techno' account.
OOOOOPS !Never mind.....There's 'Worse troubles at sea'...as the saying goes. ;)
Those figures look absolutely
wonderful, as always. :-bd =D> :-bd
Cheers - Phil :)
Those are a bit nice!
Where are the pegasus knights from, Polar Fox?
Brilliant work on those

type into google (other search engines are available) world map carpet.
now that's a risk board to go with your 10mm figurers :D
I happen to have one of these carpets in my living room :-
now where are my 10mm LOTR.

I'll definately have to get one of these carpets, preferably a rather "old world" esque one!
Also I do have a custom made "LOTR style" map of europe, done by DeepCut Studios. Which I plan to use with this game initially. Where the area controlled is the name and small space surrounding it on the map.
I just had to quickly assemble it around and throw a few figures on it to show you guys how they look on the map.

I still plan to make a load of forests and small mountains to add chokepoints on the map. Aswell as to bring more elevation to the 3d experience. I had to scrap the ideas of a full fledged 3D map, as I just dont have the space for it. Although I really want to try out could I pull off some sort of modular cork disk world building system.
That is superb!
I'm impressed!
That looks really good - you must be pleased with how it has come out.
Superb.8)
Wow !!
(I'm not jealous, in the slightest. :^o :^o :^o)
That works SO well, Atte. :-bd :-bd :-bd......I LOVE that.
Cheers - Phil.
Wow!!! What a great map and yet more amazing looking units 8).

Outstanding! I'm sure with your skills you'll have no problem putting together a modular 3D system. Cork is a popular choice, as is polystyrene with a bit of filler or the like to strengthen it. Though at this scale even some thick card, covered in something to texture and strengthen, would look pretty good.

Bit like the "map" in the opening credits of Game of Thrones? All abstracted and very blocky and angular? Sounds good.
Beautiful, the map and the miniatures!
What a wonderful project!
Well done! =D>
It has already been said, but that is SUPERB! =D> =D> =D> =D>
Hello!
I've managed to paint up some more Medieval madness (Been starting from scratch multiple times as you can see, now I've switched to the 3mm thick bases and painted up some Lancashire games 10mm Medieval miniatures.)
Still need to finish peasant units for all the players and then I'm done. And then I'll need to figure out how I'm going to do the board for this game, I'd like to keep it modular. And also have a "map" like aesthetic. Or maybe I'll keep it modular in a sense that you can add forests and mountains on top of regions to "lock" them out.
Yada yada yada, I've been literally in the ZONE and have made loads of progress in a short time. As our local vocational school was able to fix me some 3d prints for free (Siege Equipment). I really need to tap into this luck I've run into before they stop printing me stuff.

Probably shouldn't say so on this forum but I really like the siege equipment. Maybe one day Leon will do a deal with the Finnish school. :d :d

Aye, some 3d stuff is awesome. But especially 10mm I'd always buy casted first.
(Got a bunch of warmaster stuff printed aswell, mostly heroes for test painting purposes)
The printer they had is industrial scale one, and uses wax with the resin. Absolutely horrendous to clean. But worth it I suppose for free printing.
Also the 3d resin feels so much different to paint than metal, as the surface isn't glossy.
I'm getting a full custom Necromunda Imperial Guard set printed this week, I can see the printing work great on 28mm models, when you can actually clean the models with a tootbrush instead of having to fear for your life that every stroke can mutilate a pike or a sword.
Your Phtos have disappeared

They show for me on the post. Can you try to see them on another device?
Gone on Firefox.
Try to use Chrome if possible. I've uploaded the images from my google images.
Not seeing them on Chrome either :(
Should be sorted out now!
Uploaded them to Flickr, god damn you google fotos!
So I basically have 4 times the red/yellow army you see composed in one of the images. Working on building 5 squads of peasants for each faction now, probably getting them out tomorrow. Therefore finishing the project. I plan on adding some TB line crusaders as heavy man-at-arms squads.

This is mad, but absolutely glorious! Brilliant work in every respect! Looking forward to seeing its completion.
Very impressive work there
Great to see this stuff again and superb work as always 8) .
Superb work :-bd

Glad you got the photo problem sorted.
Well worth the wait!
Lovely idea, lovely work.
Stupendous !! :-bd =D> :-bd =D> :-bd
That looks superb, I love the hex map. What size hexes are they?
Fantastic!
Thank you for your kind words!
The square grid is 25mmx25mm, the hexes way back I think were 10cm from point to point.
Got some peasants finished. Also some Map Markers for show here, cannibalized from Crusader Kings Board Game. No clue why the images came out rather blurry.

Way back I promised to attach an image from my circular saw accident that I managed to inflict upon myself while building our house. (I'm a carpenter so I've grown careless with saws, but this was a good humility exercise)

Superb work! On the painting that is, not on the circular saw accident 😱
Nice. Little plastic 'things' were a bit boring!
Remember Airfix Waterloo wargame? Totally ruined mine with HORRIBLE paint... pre teen!
As for fingers... Ma almost took finger end off, clearing 'clogged' Rotary mower. Not stupid... just did not engage Brain! Grass cutting season back again... so just DON'T do it! :o ;)
Same with 'Gobblers'!
Have seen vid of farm workers trying to unjam cutters / balers... with foot! Def 'Darwin Award'! :o ;)
:o
Yikes
Sorry ... just reminded of this and it still makes me laugh.
Just wondering where the ships came from ?
:D

The ships and the pedestals are also from the Crusader Kings boardgame.
Ta La
Got the TB line Knights finished!
The units with smaller troop/base sizes are neutral faction that populate the undisturbed map.
