Title: MiniHammer (Warhammer In 10mm) Empire Project
Post by: Paul.B on 03 August 2018, 02:07:05 AM
Hello folks, my first post here.

I'm assembling a force for MiniHammer, which is something that was started on The Ninth Age forums. It's essentially Warhammer Fantasy Battle with massed ranks but played in a smaller scale - intended for 10mm - with the measurements either in CM instead of inches, or with all measurements halved. Was originally intended for The Ninth Age ruleset but people seem to also play it with Kings of War and a few others. Me personally I have my old 3rd/4th edition Warhammer rulebooks from back in the day, so that's what I'm going with!

Anyway, my choice of army is Empire, so I've been plundering Pendraken's Late Medieval and Renaissance ranges (plus a few others) - there's also a few Magister Militum models in there to mix things up.

Also, I've come to MiniHammer from being involved in the Inq28/Inquisimunda/Blanchitsu community, so my preference for painting style and aesthetic is now more towards the painterly, expressive, and in actually going with making the miniatures look like a painting or piece of artwork as part of the look. I've tried to get that into my 10mm models - as far as I am aware I may be the first person to try this at 10mm scale, so I'm not sure if it's worked! I realise it's not everyone's cup of tea, and can be a bit divisive.

I've painted about 100 Halberdiers so far, with another 200 to go, formed up in units of 50 with magnetised movement trays. I've also got some artillery in the works.

So without further babbling, the miniatures....

Very, very stylish units! You are taking very good advantage of the masses that can be created in 10mm but with each figure individual detailed. Bravo!
Welcome to the forum.

Welcome :-h

A very impressive first post, not a style I've come across before, but it certainly looks effective on mass in 10mm

Welcome to the forum. Not sure what the words mean but the result is very impressive Wargame units. I would be interested to hear more about this style and how it is achieved as I am intending to produce Flodden armies and C15th Condottiere armies on large bases for To the Strongest and Basic Impetus 2.

Welcome Friend B.

TBH, the bit between "my first post here" and "so without further babbling" ... I don't know what that means - which says more about me than it does you.

However, I do like the pictures. For some reason I am reminded of Munch.

Always good to see a new style in the mix.

Welocme again.

I am so glad you posted. Facebook is fine but the posts get lost in garbage and don't staynup a long time so better use a forum to gather your pieces of art.

I love the attempt on this style. I must confess that some more " cutting " colours for some of the equipment could improve the " readibility " of the unit. It's maybe just a matter of painting the staffs of the weapons with a bright colour ?

But this is an impressive work

First up - welcome to the forum! Hope you enjoy your time here as much as I do.

Secondly, I looked at the pictures then read the text, as I often do.

I was immediately reminded of this

So I'd say you are capturing the style rather well!

Thanks, yes I tend to just use Facebook, including the MiniHammer page, for viewing other people's work, I don't really like posting my own stuff there as I like to keep my hobby life separate and can't be bothered to make a whole new Facebook account just for miniatures. I do, however, have an Instagram for my hobby stuff if anyone is interested: https://www.instagram.com/frigidus_sanguis/ (https://www.instagram.com/frigidus_sanguis/)

I agree on the readability issue, it's a tricky balance with the deliberate "monochrome" style. I was quite pleased with the one chap where I added horizontal stripes to the halberd haft which made it pop a bit more, I should probably do more of that but wanted to get them done and move onto the next batch, perhaps I'll go back and tart them up a bit later :).

Thanks! I do have a habit of waffling and going into esoteric details! Must try to curb that. Glad they reminded you of Munch, indeed if it reminds anyone viewing of any painter working on canvas then it's coming across exactly as intended, which is really pleasing to know!  :D

I would be interested to hear more about this style and how it is achieved as I am intending to produce Flodden armies and C15th Condottiere armies on large bases for To the Strongest and Basic Impetus 2.

Thanks! I'd be happy to help with any advice or tips, so ask me anything you want to know and I'll respond here.

In MiniHammer the models are based individually on 10mm by 10mm bases and seated in trays, I adapted that slightly to two models per base on a 20mm frontage by 10mm depth to achieve more or less the same result with half the plucking of miniatures from the tray during games.

That base layout means I'm able to give each model a fair bit of dedicated attention without having to tack them all to strips before basing or the like.

That aside, I'm sure the same painting style could work where many models are glued to the same base.

In terms of the painting, to achieve this kind of look I start off with a white or light grey undercoat and it is mostly a case of building up layers of ink washes in the desired colours, and then highlighting. I don't bother with basecoat colours except for metallics.

Washing onto the light undercoat usually takes a minimum of two layers of ink to get the depth I like. It's basically "staining" the miniature rather than painting, and feels a bit like painting with watercolours.

I highlight either using very lightly drybrushed light grey or off-white (bone/cream), or a mixture of the wash colour with some light grey, cream, or white added - sometimes I'll do both, and sometimes I'll go back and add some more shade or tone down certain areas with washes again.

The metallics are washed with a bit of red (feasibly you could use any colour ink here, I just like the way red looks), then black, then highlighted again with the base colour and another layer of a lighter metal on the raised bits.

The base is just textured paint washed in browns and blacks then drybrushed in a similar way to the models. I then add tufts of 2mm static grass, in this case I go for a dead or dry grass option as it fits with the aesthetic.

Anything else you want to know just ask! :)

Thanks for that rapid input. I shall definitely give that style a go as it is really appealing and these days I have much more painting time than I used to. Will post an effort at some stage soon.

I'd almost be tempted to use the bare metal for the weapons. So basically just underbase eeverything but the metallic parts.
This technique of painting works well on bigger models, but you need to make the colours pop in 10mm.
Anyways looks great.

Thanks! Followed you back :).

Hmm, it occured to me perhaps to go back and switch the halberd hafts around - by that I mean the Crimson Company would have gold/pale halberds and the Gold Company would have red ones?

I agree with the need to make them pop - it's something I wrestled with for quite a while before settling on some colour schemes to go with and exactly what techniques to use.

I've gone for a little higher contrast on the shading and highlights than I normally would in 28mm, but again, it's getting the balance for that overall aesthetic.

If I make it too bright, add too many colours, or start turning up the saturation it'll lose some of that John Blanche painting vibe  :-. Still, I'm enjoying the process so far.

Now, is the scenery the same :D

Thanks! Yeah I hope it will look that way  :D.

At present there is no scenery, but I will be tackling that eventually. Given the scale I don't find the idea of making a board and some scenery quite as daunting as I usually would - and then the storage is easier too which is my usual worry with scenery.

I've also just finished my first bit of artillery, a Helblaster Volley Gun. The gun is not Pendraken, but rather a Kallistra Organ Gun with a further four barrels (made from plasticard and some greenstuff) added in another deck on top of the existing five barrels of the vanilla model for a total of nine just like GW's model, but without the daft "rotating gun decks" nonsense.

The crew, however, is Pendraken  :D and I also sculpted the additional powder ladle and ramrod, again greenstuff on plastic rod. I have three more of these in the works, plus some Pendraken 12lber cannons to serve as Great Cannons.

I think you have it! The palette and highlights seem to give that effect.

Paul B, the organ gun really hits all the points I consider in evaluating a piece (as expressed in a detailed and esoteric exposition elsewhere on the forum) - a great piece of work.

Haha, you may see some in time, although it might be a while. In fact, although I wanted to do this project anyway, another motivator was to enable my brother and I to play warhammer again as we did when we were teenagers, so I fully intend to put together an opposing army. He used to play Dark Elves, but always expressed an interest in Chaos and they do seem likely allies, so maybe I'll do a bit of both.

Thanks! Yeah I can appreciate that might be offputting. Of course technically there's no reason why the game can't be played with mutlibasing and just using wound counters.

Admittedly I have not yet played a game, but so far at least in handling the miniatures I don't find it too bothersome. I did try individual basing and that was a pain, but two per base actually makes it a bit more manageable.

Only just catching up on the forum - so probably only going to echo what's already been said!

The units look really good, its great to see a different style / approach to painting wargames figures. And you are going for nice big units, which always look good too. I like the variety of figures you have used too, which is probably needed to get the Warhammer Empire style going.

Looking forward to seeing more.

Great job on these miniatures, it really captures the grimdark feel and look of the WHFB universe. The painting quality is superb on a regimental scale, as the whole unit fits together. Just shows what a good wash on accurately basepainted miniatures can do, are you adding any highlighting after the wash?

Looking forward to see more of your creations and especially curious to see heroes hit the battlefield!

Hey thanks for this, sorry I didn't respond sooner have been absent from the forums for a while! Glad the minis and painting are hitting all the right notes, it's really rewarding to hear the look I'm trying to convey is coming across loud and clear!

In terms of highlighting after the washes, all I can say is it varies depending on the colour/surface, metals for example I tend to finish with a final shiny silver highlight. Similarly for pale off-white, beige, grey and sepia tones I tend to do the same sort of thing.

This project has taken a back seat for a while but I'm back at it now. I've repainted some of the halberd hafts for the units already seen, as well as finishing the first unit of the Black Company and a battery of Golden Company Great Cannons.

Currently working on two more halberdier units, one each for the Black Company and Gold Company.

Without further ado, the cannons to start:

Those aren't standard image links so I'm guessing you need whatever they were created by to see them.

Paul.B are you linking the page they are on rather than the image? You need to view the image itself and link that.

In Firefox I'd right click the image on a page, do View Image then right click the new version of the image and click Copy Image Location. Normally it will be a filename with a jpg or png extension these days.

No idea if that helps any!

Oh dear, that's annoying that some people can see them and others cannot. I tried using the images from my Google Photos with a direct link as I've got rather fed up of the drawn out process of uploading and linking via Flickr. If I view the page in Incognito mode I can't see the images either. Anyone know what the problem is? Alternatively anyone know another image hosting site that's really simple to use?

I can see some of them, first one gives error picture, rest of the artillery is fine

I've had a look and can't see any significant differences in how the links are done

Is there any chance some of the pictures have been moved?

Couldn't see most of the infantry before posting this, can now see all of them :-/

I've edited the img tags so they don't work so we can see the detail. That's not an image URL. Hence not displaying. Presumably, people with the same program that created that gobbledygook might see the image but most won't.

Image links ought to look more like this  (I've screwed with the brackets once again so you can see the contents)

Hi all, just having another stab at these images now I read mmcv's guide: http://www.pendrakenforum.co.uk/index.php/topic,18128.0.html (http://www.pendrakenforum.co.uk/index.php/topic,18128.0.html)

Can people see these this time? If they work I'll follow up with the infantry plus some new stuff I've done since.

These close ups are great!

... except (sorry to be a party pooper but it's a common error) you have still to paint the rims of the wheels on the gun carriages a metallic colour to represent steel or iron rims. If you think about it, given the weight of the artillery pieces the carriages are carrying and the state of contemporary road surfaces, bare wood rims would soon be smashed to pieces and if they had the technology to put iron hoops on barrels, they would have had the technology to put iron hoops on wheels.  Otherwise, grand painting job! Hope my honesty did not offend. :-bd

It's Warhammer.  The artillery's wheels are as likely to be eaten by Skaven as to last long enough to wear out!

Both the painting and the photography are really top notch!

It's Warhammer.  The artillery's wheels are as likely to be eaten by Skaven as to last long enough to wear out!

Both the painting and the photography are really top notch!

;D Thanks! Yeah my photography can be a bit hit and miss sometimes but I do find 10mm the hardest to shoot, glad they turned out ok.

:-bd

Not offended at all and thank you for the information, admittedly that was a gap in my knowledge :D. I will likely give the rims a bit of metallic paint at some point.

Here's another shot of the artillery base from a distance:

A new base of 50 men for the Golden Company (names of the companies are just colour-based placeholders until I think of something better):

(https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/sdPCSKN7rH58Qq-47-Vrmb6bjquLAdTNNXzf2JadDz0a7HKneoELuxQxoy1HN-TLUES_09dGFJDGJ23-9AfiGdAB38smb7JVlhhxVJMejZ9vjST0qZPd-ixWjSW3vjTU_c2DkIO5QII=w770-h577-no)

The banner is blank until I can make up my mind what kind of design to paint on there.

My understanding is a company is typically 100 men but unit cap in the rules is 50, so in my mind two bases of 50 make up a company, however, I'm not really sure what to call a base - a band? a platoon? a half-company?

Admittedly I've since considered that I don't have to have 100 halberdiers to a company, could be 50 halberdiers, 40 arquebusiers, and 10 artillerymen, for example.

I have another base of 50 halberdiers basecoated which I'll probably do in a black livery variant, plus two or three more organ guns. Next plans are to order some handgunners and I have the beginnings of a "Greatswords" unit (foot knights, basically, and not just with 2h swords, but other large melee weapons like hammers and axes too). Unfortunately I'm in a situation where I won't be able to expand the project for a wee bit, but hopefully things will change in the next few months.

Cheers!

Thank you Phil, yes I'm rather enjoying using a lot of neutral tones with spot colours across my painting in all scales just lately.

So I've finished another base of black-clad Halberdiers, the last of my current lot (please excuse the single stray cat hair :():

Thanks for the kind words everyone :).

@Noktu: Thanks! Yeah it's a bit of a mix of everything from Late Medieval up through Renaissance and Elizabethan. The Pendraken codes I used are as follows:

ELM4/ELM6/ELM31
ER1/ER14/ER17
EL1 (Command)
LAN2

There are also some Magister Militum Late Medieval Billmen mixed in there, two poses; the chaps with the open sallets, beards, and halberds held either upright or across the torso.

Hi folks, little update.

A unit of 30 "Greatswords", I use quotation marks because you may notice a few poleaxes and hammers in there, but either way, they're heavy armoured elite infantry with two handed weapons :D. There are a few headswaps and minor conversions in there, let me know what you can spot!

I've still got a couple of Organ guns knocking about, though I'm in no particular rush to get those done. Aside from this, and a small reserve of Landsknechts which will be teaming up with some Warmonger models when I can afford to order them, I've now completed all the units I had ordered and were sitting in baggies.

So next to be ordered will be some cavalry, light cavalry, of the Pistolier variety which I'm really excited about. Today I'll be doing the prep for the movement trays so I don't have to bother with them when the minis arrive!

Cheers!
