Title: ECW Project
Post by: Speirs101 on 30 April 2018, 09:16:55 AM
New Year means New Salute which means New Project therefore New army and in this case a New Model Army. Starting off with the 'Good Guys' i have my first two stands of NMA Musketeers

There seem to be quite a few ECW projects at the moment

Good start. Plenty of good rules abound for the ECW.
Title: Re: ECW Project
Post by: sunjester on 30 April 2018, 01:26:02 PM
By "Good Guys", you mean the religious fundamentalists who supported a coup against a democratically (sort of) elected Parliament and helped impose rule by a despotic, un-elected, leader even though that was supposedly what they had previous fought a war against?

The closest thing to "Good Guys" in the mid 17th century were the Levellers, and look what Cromwell and the NMA did to them!

Nice painting by the way!  ;)

Thanks for the comments  :D
Sunjester as an East Anglian my allegiance is cast, however as you rightly point out in this period of religious fundamentalism, regicide, witch trials, socialism with levellers and diggers there were few good guys but a fascinating period to study and war game, i cant believe that i haven't before!

Cracking!

"Least worst major faction" might be about right, even if they did suppress the actual "most best" fractions :D

C'mon, they got it mostly right! Also, they produced some superb albums and do a cracking live show.

Lovely painting, Speirs, and a very excellent start.

A few of my NMA figures sport sea green ribbons to commemorate the Levellers. No faction was without warts but some Leveller ideas are found in the US Bill of Rights.

I could say the same for the Levellers!

I've only seen the Levellers as Rev Hammer's backing band, so I can't really comment on that :D

They put on a good festival though, Beautiful Days is cracking.

Its bands naming themselves as such that often screws up my search results. They should stick to proper names like Pink Floyd or Iron Butterfy.

Iron Butterfly! that's the first I've heard of them since I was at uni in the early 70s.

Finished my first base of Armoured Pike, the filling between my Musketeer sandwich, just the command base to go and my first battalia of my NMA is finished. Have added flock to bases.

That's cracking, they do look extra good en mass :)

Just one minor thing, I think you've "over exposed" the piccies, they look very bright... take my photo comments with a laugh mind, as I take a truly awful photo myself ;)
Title: Re: ECW Project
Post by: Speirs101 on 02 May 2018, 10:06:39 AM
Hi ToxicPixie yes i have overexposed because the natural light photos are too dark, with a flash you get shadows and the colour becomes too glossy and really highlights any imperfections in the paint job, especially when zoomed in, something you would not notice on the tabletop at from 2 feet away. I like to photograph using natural light if possible and the white background and overexposure, i am just using the camera on my phone, imo makes the figures jump.
Natural light, the image is very dark, much darker than reality underselling the paint job, and when you have limited talents i need to make the best of what i can do  ;)
Sorry not 10mm but a 28mm Carl from Mantics The Walking Dead however the same red, basecoat and highlight as on the NMA above, the figure looks glossy, note the shadow and the effect this would have on ranked figures.
Overexposed photo as originally used, i think the figure 'Pop' more in this, colours are brighter much closer to reality and much more forgiving than the flash image

Yeah, I think I need to tweak my photo taking skills... I have a cheap collapsible light box (think Fred first posted the link for them!), but prefer to use natural light in the garden, but even so my photo's are a bit duff most of the time. Might try the overexposure if I can work the phone camera settings :D

Look very good, Speirs. I happen to like the overexposure, it makes them look like a watercolor which is kind of cool really. Also like that you photoed the pikemen on a Pendraken logo! Are you adding command and flags next?
Title: Re: ECW Project
Post by: Speirs101 on 02 May 2018, 04:00:02 PM
Thanks again for the kind comments, yes d_Guy command is next, having 9 figures on the base front rank of Pike-Officer- Flag-drummer-Pike and then a back row of 4 Pike. Have yet to decide which regimental flag to assign them wavering towards Pickering's as they were from predominately Essex and Suffolk and i was raised in the former and reside in the latter! The logo paper i used as was predominately White as a background/contrast  :)

Apart from the flag, still a) undecided on the regiment and b) not that great at mounting paper flags and getting them to look realistic, hints and tips please, I am calling these done. Have prepped up my second pike and shotte regiment so starting those tonight and sorted out two regiments of commanded Shotte, two regiments of cavalry and the two field pieces for my starter NMA if I maintain momentum I hope to have these done by mid June   ;)

Try image size tags in the piccy bbcode bit. I have to dredge my brain every time to remember it or I'd say how!

Stalwart looking chaps at the front, very good. Can you mount the flag on a lollipop tube or similar and a lot it over the standard pole? That way they can have multiple flags and pretend to be different units as needed :)

On image sizes, change the contents of the brackets preceding the image url from img to img width=xxx or img height=xxx where xxx is the size I usually go with 500 or 750 but type in numbers and preview to see the effect. The spacing shown here matters.

Dismountable flags sounds a good idea, if slightly fiddly.

In terms of hints & tips...

I print my flags, once wraped around the pole and the edges are lined up I bend them around a cocktail stick or similar in a couple of directions to make them look as though they are flapping in the breeze. The second bend looks better if it is not parallel to the first. I also tend to have the top rear corner drooping. Painting the edges to match the flag colours and hide the white edge also really helps.

Too many gamers ignore that white edge step. The result looks frightful when they do.

I use interchangeable flags quite a bit, I print them out on adhesive letter labels which helps since you can use the gummy bits to hold the flag in place but it won't permanently hold the flags to the staff.

Happy to do it.

The width= bit goes after the img in the image tag.

I used {img width=750} - those are the wrong brackets but if I use the right ones you won't see anything :)

You need a space between img and width=xxx but the new bit is all one word, so to speak.

You can use height=xxx too, if you prefer

If you preview your posts you can play around with the tags and just press preview again to see the difference you've made.

That any help? Or clear as mud?

I tried to use Photobucket for mollinary's pics the other day and it wouldn't let me in without subscribing to a payment plan, so I can't access any of the existing images on there.  It was only Forum stuff really, so not a great loss but we'll have to rely on the Pendraken Flickr account now, which has an upload limit in place.

It has been said before, but it really does enhance the look of a unit if you paint the white edges of the paper flags. At present the white draws the eye, and takes away from the beautiful painting of the figures. And it only takes a couple of moments.

A couple of very minor points:
Title: Re: ECW Project
Post by: Westmarcher on 25 January 2020, 11:33:11 PM
Good work. Taking Paul and Mollinary's recommendations a further step forward, if you have a spare pike man figure which is otherwise expendable, cut off an appropriate section from the top of the pike and place that into the flag so that you have a spear point sticking up and out from the flag.
Title: Re: ECW Project
Post by: paulr on 26 January 2020, 12:09:40 AM
I put the cut off part of the flag pole above the wire, so have that point sticking out from the flag
Title: Re: ECW Project
Post by: pierre the shy on 26 January 2020, 04:28:22 AM
Nice looking unit Speirs101  :)

I'll +1 the comments about the flags, edging them and inserting a bit of wire and using the tip showing at the top of the flag is worth the effort....did it with several of my Scots ECW Irish regiments and it is a pretty quick and straight forward process that looks really good once done.
Title: Re: ECW Project
Post by: Speirs101 on 27 January 2020, 11:54:49 AM
Have taken onboard the suggestions  of mollinary, Paulr and Pierre and have edged my flags as close as I can achieve. Also taken on board the improvement suggested by Westmarcher and used a spare pikemans pike to extend the flag pole. My second Royalist regiment is Sir Edward Stradling's regiment of foote

I've just read through the whole thread - some excellent painting and basing.

Always more interesting when you have had a go at the same figures yourself
(these were some of my favourite Pendrakens).

Anyway, one suggestion which was made to me and which you might find
helpful is to not to paint every figure in the same uniform but to add some
variety.   If memory serves (which it debatable), I used a standard coat colour
but painted the trousers and caps a mix of greys, browns, greens and reds.
I stuck to a limited palette of four or five colours and just added them at
random.

Just had another look and I think it can add a layer of 'realism'.

Keep up the good work.

Phil

I've done that sort of thing too even with my NMA breeches; some grey, some nearly black, some various browns, a few reds. Coats are uniform enough to look regular and upgraded, but they don't look as if there's suddenly a super-efficient bureaucracy backing them up.

I hope you're pleased with the improved look of the flag :)

The varied hats are a good start on the 'campaign' look
I added quite a few non-uniform trousers (browns and greys) in my ECW units and a few non-uniform jackets. My officers were all in non-uniform colours
But as we are not really sure what they looked like you have plenty of scope ;)

The Kings Lifeguard of Foot would of course be more uniform than most regiments

I present Sir William Pennyman's regiment of foote. I have taken on board the tips, there are a few different coloured jackets and breeches to give more of a campaign look,  now on to Prince Ruperts Blewcoats...

Finished my first unit of Royalist cavalry, flag is from Wargames designs and is an unknown regimental flag. Starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel on this project only one regiment of cavalry, 2 guns and 2 generals and then this project is done, it has only taken the best part of two years!

Lovely work. There's a nice feeling about reaching the end of a project. And then of course that feeling when you realise actually you could just do with one more unit, and of course then the other side needs a matching unit, but then that seems a bit unbalanced so maybe you should flesh it out a bit more and add another batallia for each side and a new general to lead it and...

I have to say that your project is impressive!

As your infantry units are painted with excellence, I'd suggest you add a highlight on the reins within the cavalry forces (and maybe add some silver highlights on the armour). I just feel your cavalry is missing some additional detail compared to your excellent infantry. Having painted 10mm cavalry, I do understand that painting multiple horses can be such a chore.

There are some Dragoons mounted and dismounted enough for a regiment per side. I have yet to decide how to base them, I don't like the look of mixed mounted and dismounted bases I have seen with 28mm pike and Shotte armies I would prefer  to substitute when dismounted. So I will probably base as regular cavalry and then the infantry in a 3 base skirmish line. There are 2 medium guns, again 1 gun per army, with .

Finally I have some cavalry, I have bought a pack of lobster and brimmed hats and plan on mixing them up, 1 regiment will be Prince Rupert's lifeguard of horse the other another Royalist regiment. I  also have Prince Rupert and his faithful companion 'Boy'.

Be interested to see how you do your dragoons, I too have a pack of mounted and dismounted in my to-do pile, as well as a horse holder I believe.

Title: Re: ECW Project
Post by: Speirs101 on 06 April 2020, 04:51:26 PM
Hi mmcv, Dont think they come with a horse holder and empty mounts. I  plan to have 4 figures in a skirmish line per base, I bought both caps and Morian dragoons advancing to get a mix, and then a command base with flag, drummer and officer behind  4 skirmishers. This will have the same frontage as my pike and shotte and commanded shotte but with less dense bases. That will then leave me enough foot figures to add a second regiment of dragoons when/if I choose to expand the armies further. Currently finishing off some FIW Blue Moon British Line infantry bought last Salute, once done with them will begin prepping and undercoating, so this time next week hopefully I will be making progress.

Nice work on painting up those dragoons  :-bd

If you're happy to edit these in something like GIMP or MS Paint and then print them out then here's a link to a free PDF on the BCW Project site of a series of articles that were originally in Military Modelling back in the 1980's including Dragoon guidions for both sides:

Glad to be of service  :)

I used a lot of self printed flags on my Scots ECW stuff.

One thiing to remember is to colour in the edges of the flag with its base colour(s) once you have attched it to the flagpole - makes it look a lot better than leaving a white paper strip showing from when it was cut out.

Good luck to your dragoons on the tabletop.

My ECW project rolls on, thanks for the feedback it keeps me going in these dark times. Next up is my Parliament Medium gun, added a few bits from the artillery equipment pack. Now onto the Royalist one....

Thanks for the positive comments, hot on the heels of my NMA medium cannon is my Royalist medium cannon utilising the same bits from the Artillery equipment set as the NMA to Diorama it up a little.

With the release of Warlords new Epic battles pike and Shotte range I faced a dilemma, start a new ECW project or finish my 10mm project
The starter box push of pike was not too far off what I had in 10mm, so I decided rather than start again to finish what I had started by getting it to the level of the Push of pike starter box and then using the rules from push of pike as they have modified the pike and shotte rules for a smaller scale
So i needed for each faction; 7 regiments of pike and shotte, 1 commanded shotte, a regiment of dragoons, 3 regiments of cavalry and 3 medium and light cannons. I also needed a single regiment of cuirassiers.
First step was to get both factions up to 6 pike and shotte each, for 2 Battalia a side, i think I will end up with 9 for 3 Battalia. So I needed 4 more Parlimentarian and 2 more Royalist regiments.
My Royalist regiments I decided to add a splash of colour so I have a yellow and purple coated regiment, my Parlimentarians are in New Model Army red coats

These look smashing, my good fellow; I'm currently working on a bit of a pike & shotte project myself, and if mine turn out even half as good as yours, I'll be a happy man! Nice work!
