Title: Fred - 2018 Painting Diary
Post by: fred. on 08 January 2018, 09:40:08 PM
Time for a new thread, new year and all that!

There has been a bit of hiatus over the Christmas period, mainly down to flu, so its taken a while to get much done, and to get a new thread started.

2016's thread was a mammoth, with over 800 posts, and 32,000 views during the year, checking now its up to 62,000 views, so nearly doubled in the intervening time. Which is quite surprising to have so many more views, when the thread isn't active.

2017 was perhaps a year more of gaming, than painting. Real Life really intervened for a good chunk of the year disrupting many things, including gaming and painting.  The 2017 thread still managed 460 posts, and 20,444 views.

Looking back over 2017 the part that surprised me was the resurgence of WWII during the year, very unexpectedly I built a 15mm British Desert force for the Battlegroup rules. I really enjoyed putting this force together, the building of plastic kits for the tanks, and surprisingly the painting of the 15mm figures. There is a fair bit of work to do to finish these figures, but they are perfectly playable now.

The second burst of WWII was using Rommel divisional scale rules, this allowed my 10mm WWII models to get on the table, which was great as I have loads of stuff. We played both Desert and NW Europe games. I added to my Desert forces with Italians and some more British infantry, and expanded my early war French with more infantry and some cavalry.

The third burst of WWII at the end of the year (and very much in progress) are 28mm British Airborne for Bolt Action. I've enjoyed building these and painting them. Yet to play any BA. But I know that I can use the figures for Chain of Command if BA feels too gamey.

I totally new period for me was Colonial with The Men Who would be Kings rules, I've built small forces for Mahdists, British Red Coats and Zulus. We played a few games, but it would be good to play more.

Both Fantasy and Sci Fi were played lots with our two sets of home-brew rules. Both sets of rules are pretty stable now, with tweaks to magic for Hordes of War, and expand army lists and points for mini epic. Painting wise there were small expansions of existing forces, with additions to my Beestmen army and Fishmen, along with camps for several armies.

There was also a fair bit of terrain building / painting, with Jungle terrain, farm animals, a desert fort, craters and finally some base boards for scatter terrain.

As to 2018, at the minute I'm feeling like letting it take its own course. Currently the 28mm airborne are being worked on. But I'm not sure what's next, a few more Zulus would be useful to give me a playable force (I need 6 units, and currently have 4).

Anyway, enough words, some photos...

mini epic - Orks vs Squats

We had a kind of diagonal deployment - which didn't really work on the shape of the table, as we pretty much ended up playing up the narrow width of the table.  My green squats are in the foreground, the Orks in yellow and red are in the distance.

Close up of the squat deployment. The large artillery pieces where heavily picked on by the Ork fightas, they only got off one barrage. But this did leave a lot of the rest of my force available to attack.

Late Game - my reinforcements have tunnelled out (LHS, large light grey drill). Lots of fighting around the central town. Largely the Squats were able to sit back and allow the Orks to advance onto their guns. The large Ork formations are pretty durable, but they don't have that much firepower. The Orks main attacking force is their Fightas which can swoop in and unless AT rockets on pretty much whatever target they choose. My AA was moderately effective, but the Fightas were defiantly the Orks MVP. In the end I was able to control 3 of the 5 objectives, with one contested one, and the Orks holding the final one.

It was a good game, and a first outing for the Orks under the current rules, they played very much like they do under original Epic, which isn't necessarily the best.

28mm British Airborne

Some more work on these troops over the weekend - the next dozen or so figures near completion

This gives we the completion of the 2nd section, and a Vickers team and the 6pdr crew.  Highlighting and basing are the main things left to do.

I picked up some additions from 1st Corps, a couple of jeeps, another section of troops, a pair of snipers and some supply markers. I have undercoated these figures by hand using Vallejo Surface Primer, this is described as grey, but it is a very pale grey. I was fed up of waiting for weather that was OK to spray undercoat, so thought that I'd try brush on primer.

rGreat looking Epic game and the Paras aren't half bad either. I painted mine years ago for 'Rules of Engagement' but sold them on when I moved from 28mm to 10mm.

Thanks Steve.

I'm glad the game looks good. I spent a bit of effort in the least 6 months improving the look of my gaming table. With small scales the table is quite a large part of photos. So I got a Deep Cut Mat as the base, which looks much better than a plain green flocked mat. Then more recently I replaced my funky foam bases for terrain with some textured and flocked MDF ovals. The jungle plants where newly made last year, and I probably need to do some more so that I can cover more of the table.

Having a bit of a think about projects and what I want to get painted next.

At the start of last year's thread http://www.pendrakenforum.co.uk/index.php/topic,15270.msg222060.html#msg222060 I went through what had in the lead mountain. And looking back on this list, not much has changed. The main progress was on the Beastmen that went to a playable force. There was a small amount of progress on Araby and Lizardmen, but most of the rest stayed in boxes being very shiney.

Forces in which only a small amount of effort is needed to improve playability
* Camps for HoW
* Lizardmen (a few infantry and flyers to finish)
* Araby (a few camels and other cavalry)
* Mongols (a few more units)
* Epic Squats ( a few more infantry)
* Marines ( a few aircraft)
* Tyranids ( a few big carnfex, and warriors, and the big bio-titans)

So the above should all fall under the quick wins category.

Bigger Projects
* WWI French - not too many more troops needed here
* WWI British - I enjoyed painting these, and have loads more, so getting another Brigade done would be good
* WWII British - I got a few reinforcements for these (mainly commandos) should be pretty quick to paint
* WWII Desert - got a few Italains and British to finish off, again should be quick to paint

Army Sized Projects
Dwarfs, Romans or Evil Men (or new Ogres when they arrive)
It would be good to get on with one of these. The first 3 are all armour heavy so should be fairly quick - spray black dry brush silver, do shields.  But these have struggled to gain traction recently (well over severa years...)

To a certain degree the above all feels a bit hypothetical as its likely that something new will alight and that will become the next big thing! I was reading Advanced SoBH the other day, and thinking about various war bands for that. These could be largely provided from existing figures, with a few upgrades I'm sure. We played a cowboy game just before Christmas, which the rules weren't great, but I could easily see getting a gang for this style of games, if we find a better set of rules.

It's definately easier to buy stuff than to paint it, and its even harder to play with stuff once its painted.

Missed a couple of updates I think  :o
Poor start to the year, and all that. No excuses (for once!)

28mm British Airborne

Got some reinforcements for these guys from 1st Corps, a couple of jeeps, another infantry section, a pair of snipers and some containers as objective markers or the like.

I've got all the infantry undercoated - having switched to brush on undercoat due to the constant rain - it feels quicker overall as you save all the faffing getting stuff line up for spraying, setting up a box to catch the overspray, spraying, letting dry, rotating, spraying letting dry. Bringing in, letting dry and de-gas. etc.

Anyway - overall process is good with 2 sections painted and various support options. This is them in the middle of varnishing (again brush on), most have had a coat of matt varnish, the right most ones are still in shiny (but hard) gloss.

We had a first game of BA on Friday night. I have to say the rule book is appalling for playing. Its pretty good for reading. But when you actually play a game you just can't find anything. At best rules are buried in long paragraphs much of which is background at best. Then stuff is just spread around everywhere. The worst example was doing an Assault, we read the rules infantry can move 12", no problem move the figures. Then we find several sections later (after we had done response fire from the defenders) that if the attackers cross terrain they only move 6". Why this wasn't with the movement rules who knows.  We had far too many people (3 on each side) so the game went very slowly. But any good tips for speeding up future multiplayer would be appreciated.

The other game that is grabbing my attention at the minute is Dracula's America - this is basically a supernatural cowboy game. Its small scale skirmish with each player having a gang of 5-10 figures.

In contrast to BA the rule book is really clear and straight forward. You read it and get it straight away. The layout is the opposite with lots of headings, short paragraphs, rules in one part, background elsewhere. They have been out for a while, but we only spotted them recently with an advert for the new supplement Hunting Grounds. Within this supplement are two new gangs, the Chinese Tong, who I already have figures for, and the Forsaken who are 7th Cavalry based, who I have ordered some figures for.

For the various supernatural figures I had a rummage in my Reaper Bones figures and found lots, which is great as these had rather been languishing.

The last two I'm thinking of using as summonable entities for my Tong

Popped into the local Wargames shop this afternoon, to see if they had any 40mm bases. They didn't but they did have a couple of Perry western houses, so I thought I'd get those, it would have been rude not to!

Ordered the bases from Leon when I got home!

Thanks Chaps  :)

We did multiplayer just like glorified single player, pulled an order dice, gave it to the side CO, who either used it or gave it to one of his subordinates. In the rules it talks about using a dice colour per player.

What would be good (and what we do with epic) is for each activation, each player on the active side moves a unit. Keeps things moving much more. Might try this with BA.
Title: Re: Fred - 2018 Painting Diary
Post by: petercooman on 21 January 2018, 09:20:19 PM
We do it like that as well, each side one colour dice. Makes it a bit more "social". Players need to discuss more about wich unit gets to act. We divide the armies equally so every one gets options ( for example, each gets two squads and a team, each gets one of the anti tank assets etc...)

A lot of the bolt action mechanics is about shifting priorities IMHO, ignoring units that already acted for more immediate threaths, so giving multiple actions might change "the game" a bit. Might work though!

Ps: That sasquatch looks the business!!

its trying to balance player down time, vs not wrecking the game by having one side have a load of activations together because 2 or 3 players each activate. There was no flow at all to the game on Friday, between the distance in time between each player getting to activate troops and the huge amount of rummaging through the rules.

Yeah the rulebook is a bit of a stinker when looking things up. I filled mine with post it notes after our first play to make it easier to find stuff that came up. player down time with us is pretty good though. We play with 3-4 so not that many!

Might be a good idea to divide the table in 2-3 sections? And let each section (2 opposing players) play at the same time? would only give a bit of "delay " when shooting/moving across to another section of the board. Would need some clarification though, to "transfer" units from one section to another, but might add to the overall strategy of the game!!

Had wondered about doing that  - essentially running 2 or 3 separate side by side games. Might work.

Anyway, on the painting front, finished a wolf tonight - went for this kind of look

With animals I think there is always the temptation to just paint brown/grey and dry brush lighter highlights. When you look at (image of) an animal there really is alot more going on.

A fun bit of set dressing for Wild West games.

Mrs F asked if the elves were loosing their magic and needed a wishing well...

When informed it was for Cowboys not Elves (of course) she said was a train coming for the cowboys, which to me seems like a green light to get a train for the Cowboys. Haven't yet explained that the cowboys are Chinese Tong.

My understanding is that Chinese labour helped build the railways so the Tong have an interest.

As usual having taken photos I can now see all sorts of missed bits. Still not sure I'm doing highlights bright enough. They seem very bright when painted, but disappear in photos, and seem quite subtle on the figures.

Yes, with additions of various extra bits to the mine tower.

They do, its a while since I bought stuff form them, and they have really expanded their range. There are also lots of other companies doing Wild West buildings, its probably the best fit for MDF style buildings too.

I'm pleased that some of these are the matching foot figures for the cavalry I painted last week. This is fortunate as these figures are new, and the cavalry came from a mate's lead pile!

A bit of a gap in updates - but not in painting (well at least until this week)

The 7th Cavalry are now all finished, and based. Here are a couple of photos of the troopers, again the Mine Tower. They were quick snaps at lunch time, in the surprisingly bright sunshine.

Thanks Matt - glad you noticed the steps. I was trying to show areas of more wear / foot fall.

I'm thinking of getting some card shingles to do the roofs - as I have done one small one with hand cut shingles, and it improves the look, but I think I will buy some for the bigger roofs.

Not too much painting for last few weeks - mainly due to general busyness, have at least been getting some games in.

Actually got some paint on some 10mm figures this evening (I think the first of the year!!), and they are nearly all Pendraken. Its only an undercoat, but its still paint.

Does anyone know what ER3 Highlander with Two handed sword, has on his back?

Could be some kind of club, or a long quiver (but he doesn't have a bow) ??

Post by: d_Guy on 18 March 2018, 04:09:27 PM
Fred, I can confirm it is a scabbard. I measured it also, it is the same length as the claymore blade, hilt to tip.
I kept wanting to paint it as a quiver but there is no indication of a bow on the figure.
Title: Re: Fred - 2018 Painting Diary
Post by: fred. on 18 March 2018, 04:39:56 PM
Thanks, with two votes for scabbard, I'll go with that.

I think its the bit at the top, which I guess is the metal bit at the top (the throat apparently) that is a bit over sized, and makes it look a bit like a quiver.

I have to say, not my favourite figure, but I have a fair few of them, and they will round out the Gallowglass units along side, the two poses in ELM19
Title: Re: Fred - 2018 Painting Diary
Post by: d_Guy on 18 March 2018, 05:09:16 PM
Yup! That bit at the top is why I kept wanting to paint as quiver. Plus there is this:
(Irish Mercenaries - Albrecht Drurer (c. 1520), Victoria and Albert Museum)
The second from the left. He has a quiver and bow. The sword appears to be a zweihander which I believe is longer and heavier than a claymore). Neither sword would be easy to draw from a back scabbard (and I’d venture the zweihander would be impossible). I even tried to convince myself that the bow was unstrung and carried in the quiver.  But didn’t win.  :)

These guys should give me two units of Gallowglass, two of Kerns and one horse. I think I will need more Kerns...

Not sure whether to go with my normal orange/brown for the spears, or to go with a darker red/brown to give a bit of contrast against the yellow clothes.

Like where you are going, Fred - think you are capturing the look. First time I've seen the kern figures painted - nice!
A question (or two):
The third stick back in center - two axemen with axes butt on ground, which pack are they in?
Also one has hand to back of helmet - is that a modification?

d_Guy - the Kerns are a mix of the Kerns and the Bonnachts packs

The two gallowglass with axes resting on the ground are Irregular which fit in well enough with the Pendraken ones, and certainly add a bit more pose variety. The one with his hand up on his head comes that way.

Although the Kerns are pretty much painted, I'm not basing them quite yet, as I have found a bunch of archers which I will add in, which will up the variety and increase the number of bases I can field!

This is why I like 10mm three units done in as many days! And it could easily have been 5 if it wasn't for adding in the archers.

Thanks, Fred.
The few Irregular figures I have (ECW) are somewhat thinner and shorter than Pendraken and when I've used them (to get xtra poses) I shimmed them up on thier bases. These two seem to match better and it appears you did not need to shim?

The based figures look great, btw.

These ones while a fraction slimmer work fine with the Pendraken figures. I have some, others from irregular and they are quite a bit slighter, as is often the case different ranges vary a bit.

What are the decals of?

para wings for the shoulders (almost too small to be worthwhile)
NCO chevrons (just about visible)
Red cross armband - defiantly visible, but probably a pain to put on.

But they came with the Warlord figures, so I feel I should use them. More usefully the sheet includes vehicle decals too.

I've already done the wings and nco stripes on 15 or so, and they were fairly straight forward - being used to putting decals on 10mm tanks and 6mm planes, these aren't that small.
Title: Re: Fred - 2018 Painting Diary
Post by: paulr on 10 April 2018, 02:33:36 AM
Fair enough when you look at it that way :)
I was thinking more of the lack of flat surfaces ;)
Title: Re: Fred - 2018 Painting Diary
Post by: fred. on 10 April 2018, 10:16:29 PM
Decaled up the paras this evening, didn't quite have enough wings for all of them, but good luck spotting which ones don't have them  ;)

The lack of flat surfaces wasn't a big problem at all, the arms are gently enough curved that putting the wings on the shoulder area is fine. On the odd sergeant's stripes I used a bit of Micro Sol to soften the decal so it would mould into shape. This went doubly so for the medic's armband.

Super close up shot so that you have half a chance of seeing the wings!

Give them another coat of gloss tomorrow. Then think about basing. Then just a final matt coat of varnish.

Thanks both. The decals went on with little trouble. There were only two that I recall being a bit fiddly; an NCO stripes that flipped over and took an age to get the right way up, and the medic's armband that needed cutting to fit and had to curve round the arm.

Thanks all.

I've got back into painting these, and getting them finished off. I'm really not sure the decals are worth the effort, but they aren't hard to do, and came with the figures, and I will know they are there.

Thanks Terry, I've bascially followed the video recipe given on Warlord's site. Which fortunately I had all the paints for, and the end result seems to work.

Great stuff!

Currently painting warlord games panzer grenadiers. I have a batch of us airborne ready for painting as well (already did a testfigure to see if my uniform colour would work out). Only reason i have those as the last bolt action stuff in my painting  que is because of the decals  ;D

Although i guess the american flag and the screaming eagles patch will be more noticeable on the plain jackets of the americans  :-\

Go on Peter, the decals aren't that hard to do, even though they will be more prominent on the US uniforms.

Got another coat of gloss on tonight, and going for the other extreme to last night's photo, here are all of them in their fancy MDF storage tray

Yes it is. The mdf is a fair bit smaller than the box which was a bit of a surprise. But with a bit of double sided tape holds it in place.

The figures fit well, once there is a bit of sand on the top of the base then they fit very snuggly, and will stay in place with movement.

I was able to take them on a 2 hour car journey and they all stayed in place.

Rebasing

I finally decided that it was time to rebase my Warmaster Empire troops for out home brew rules - basically going from 40x20mm bases to 40x40mm bases. Obviously you can just push two 40x20mm bases together to get a 40x40mm base - and this is what I have been doing for a long time. But we are planning a big game, and I have realised that I have far too much cavalry compared to infantry. So it seems a good time to rebase the missile troops, as I will be able to nearly double the number of bases of troops I have, going from 8 figures on a 40x20mm base (doubled up to give 40x40), to 9 or so on a 40x40mm base.

The troops have a bath to loosen the glue - how many use PVA and how many superglue?

(https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/25a4TN7deVe89uNJq2jv-KPy61kyL1PgBTcgu0HKH4cS6Rd-q7NHMtPqR6a5h36Pv08D5YlNpNZUq-rJWjojz9npXbm3dr49i-Riv5Z1-IhBGrmdppf-_TNpd2nSswTepzB4wLPB9FDRwB6utFOgxUoqzHWY7p6f8p5YwNNbG7lheTUEV6rPwMsZ3jECfWDY9X6Qp7A5f5PeoTpYfVuAKwBW2MqXbEVcOuwFEUCmaTMM1Fqz_4b--0n3I1vpl44pw-ckAYMSm778UpRfNcwDNm9c5KYSratTHT1RxMJKI9iNFnw6l_tIDdswMgDCjVbvV17EPzHyJi9X0d0pfMfyPJXfubwxvmVRT2lQ0G_9hNMG0HzuMb-icJ0t77YHQVCuZdTckhIGgLwIQ3tyAm_CTR1ZsaCp4NRSUIdjYQuLhwiIzffcqfmOdPsTgrnvMbZGda9eZkiR8hniwWmrI-Tc6MmvR-KdhNYtIK1FoMijTUatMAqSFTcLvNgffl876ePJnuwAypVxd85kXyAORIBy4tXE2b9O3RzcvMKDJgeaQ0H7NLk8_cJ60_U70EDUWKh1heSfJCeppvdyaoy69GizD5hivZxeT1Z6OiS2vSImWddXip_Q3th7G4f_rRsHiTVp-bixEwk-U8WD3wwNsAbrd1yqtSViun1B5Q=w1170-h735-no)

Most came off very easily, so lots based with PVA. There were a few that were a bit harder to remove, perhaps using superglue, or just because they were single figures it was harder to get leverage. The ones still soaking were based with wood filler, this was much more resistant to soaking, but leaving them a bit longer and flexing the bases they popped off. Only 1 casualty in the whole process.

Yes the variation in the lines looks a lot better. And most of the GW figures are still in pairs, I only snipped one pair apart per base. But just by putting the figure bases in a bit of jaunty line it looks much better.

Off the photo to the left are the cannon, which had done good work shooting various undead creatures down, the wolves had just been summoned in, but are in a position to be attacked by the flanking cavalry. In the middle near the wood has been a big punch up. But the undead are starting to run out of units to throw in. On the right the knights are about to ride down the zombies

The right flank
(https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/YI6i22BYQJ7Z_Hfs2Z2GzPpkMOQCMKt0EY3rjeEGy8UMZIr9bjIti20yPRzJQ7bDRp89iUq-cwC_4JOnlkvBHHtMTaHOP9H5CFll0vHhNyCP7eYq4zzFvsdTLdQh8P8M8lgKuFhIcRv_WAR8B22-RhuS54oOf9gQLnGeMzIXKaULlAxTQJVK9LLAQBraYkvokQuShVEkFVyKPhf3cvJbvQbfO3ndVIs4ugh1X1duKMnRZYHpQUsq5ixk2pU4qkJtgDMzOiWycsO9Bg9OdGIUC0Ea2TJprSAhEPedrcMzLP9dEwlfBWb-vv8f6PGmKobU6RtTU0hcomDn0Br0AEQBJjKsGDW83evurqlHwu_y3JPGcvso73-O9EbNVd3_kDmfFuRdkw4R49egDmZZfU-q3KLn1kBOO4oRyze9ojWb6r-asaSPl3AXhdumIvNpRrbepyHqn0-5d3XYEtf_TIJk8oCk7tWUs2US4qbtAb4lB7vxbyZ2paf2bOHxk6TxbO5RsaojbzBhkNP6hjKOcvkGfHZ2Kguh36pYF2s5zOQQv2s-0heeeY1djJl-h7urynyA6TXJIT3iZezeZsJfuAMVNpIB52kQo8cMqJKw0uqJToBst4Pas4idd--TFHTOOpEoMgDaj3sTOaxGvx7R46-WhTn9F3Qw3jyg1Q=w1146-h709-no)

On this flank the boney undead generally stayed put. They did advance a couple of columns of spearmen out past the village, but these have all been dealt with. The shooters on the back line, while not appearing to be not very effective did manage to chip off a number of my units, particularly on the far right. Newly rebased handgunners defending the field.

Yes the edges of the flags have been painted, I always try to do this, to stopped the white cut edges of the paper standing out. I've you don't need to worry too much about an exact match of the colour.

Nice game!

I've been on and off about big battle fantasy. On the one hand i have everything ready painted for 28mm so can just play KOW without effort, and on the other hand i want to replace everything with 10 mm and try to get it on a table half as big.

But going from something completely ready to starting all over again is a big step! Your pictures always make me think about it  ;D

I paint the edges of my flags as well, makes a major difference :)

I was particularly impressed with all the good colour matches and the neat paint work, particularly on the red and yellow checker board

Thanks Paul, the colours seemed to match very easily to the mid-tone blue, red and yellows I picked out, I do think it is helped just by the small area. The checkerboard wasn't too bad to do, as there where lines to follow, and a very small area to cover.

Reading back my post from this morning - I see that between early morning, iPad virtual keyboard, and auto-correct, it has turned my sentence into something like english...

Love the flags. The game wasn't too bad looking either. I use black on flag edges but matching the color looks even better.

Thanks d_Guy. I've used a sepia wash in the past on the edges of flags, pretty much anything is an improvement on the stark white of the cut paper.

Pendraken Order
Always good to receive a nice heavy parcel from Pendraken, this one was surprisingly large too, probably because of the MDF bases.

Lots of interesting stuff in that order to add in to your existing stuff. You are working much more consistently  than my leisurely attack on Flodden to Kinsale (still trying to work out which portion to ship off to a Pixie for coloration). Yours do have rather further to travel, Paul.

Continuing with the Empire army, following the mammoth rebasing. I've got a few more units of Flagellents on the go. The first couple of strips I've gone for a grey cassock, so these guys are nearing completion, just doing various shades for hair, of which their is a lot of. They kind of remind me of Phil...

Been a few weeks since updates, but a good amount of stuff has been happening. And I managed to get some photos taken this afternoon in natural light.

We have played several games of For Parliament and King, and have really enjoyed the games, which has meant that my LoA figures have got back on to the painting desk

I already had 3 stands of Tyrconnel's horse, so added another stand to give two units in FKaP, and painted up 2 more with red coats and yellow facings, and the two officers.

At the risk of spoiling you!!!  ;D

Here are a couple of units of Dragoons, these are based on 40x20mm bases, mainly so that the figures can be assembled into to different combinations to represent different types of units. So you can have just the 2 foot bases to represent a Forlorn Hope, you can have 2 foot and 2 mounted as dismounted Dragoons, putting the 2 foot and 1 mounted on a sabot base, leaving the other mounted stand as a marker for the horses. Or you can use all 4 mounted stands as a mounted unit.

These are painted as Clare's dragoons, part of the Jacobite army, buff coats, yellow facings.

Thanks Terry.

More stuff for FKaP - had a rummage in the lead mountain and found a bunch of ECW figures. These were mainly bought for building units for Irregular Wars, but no harm in using them for what they are designed for.

Mainly lots of dismounted dragoons, after rebasing loads of figures onto 40mm squares, with FKaP I realised that I need figures on 40x20mm bases so that they can represent Forlorn Hopes. For FKaP I have gone for one 40x40mm base represents 1 hit for a unit, to give a quick visual representation of the size of the different units. As its a gridded game the difference in frontage between 80mm and 120mm units doesn't matter. And as my 80mm ones are going on Warband sabots which are 100mm wide there is even less difference.

Lots of dragoons, mostly Pendraken, and some others, which could be Old Glory, with a stand of Cuirassiers at the back, I'm pretty sure these are Irregular.

These have been done in semi-uniform colours (at least for jackets). These figures were so quick to paint in comparison to the LoA ones.

Unfortunately for all your politically charged names, the War Dogs are for the Northern English, or Lowland Soots lists in Irregular Wars. Or slightly further afield the Conqusitadors.

Irregular Wars is mainly 16C moving into early 17C

I think with most War Dogs there are included more for flavour than strict historical usage. Though the forces are small enough in irregular wars that they could just represent a pack of hounds.

So in a bit of change down in size, I've done a few additions to my Epic Squats. We have made some adjustments to units sizes (going to a more consistent 3/6/9/12 stands to a unit, rather than some of the rather random sizes in Epic Armageddon). So I needed a few more stands for some units, and took the opportunity to finish off a few others, like the robots that were largely done, but not quite finished.

are your bases 25mm dia?
do you or any of your group use vanguard/onslaught models - if so are the casts any good and how do they size up against the old GW epic models?

Yes, the squats are on 25mm round bases. I went with MDF for these mainly as the figures are so small and light. I'd normally use 2p's but thought they might break the figures in storage.

I've got both onslaught and vanguard figures, both are nice crisp castings and scale well with GW epic stuff.  If there are particular ones you are interested in let me know and if I have them I can take some pictures.

Irregular Wars Figures

Had a sort through the various figures I had purchased for Irregular Wars Irish / Scots forces, to work out just what units I could make.  These armies are for the late Tudor period (broadly 1550 to 1600)

From painting earlier in the year I have
4 x Gallowglass
5 x Kerns
2 x Irish Horse
2 x Wardogs

From sorting through the various figures I can make the following units
6 x Kerns (8 figures each)
3 x Bonnachts (12 figs)
4 x Redshanks (12 figs)
2 x Clan shot (8 figs)
4 x Scots Pike (16 figs)
2 x Irish Horse (4 figs)
2 x Horse Boys (3 figs)

I have a lot of Highlander figures for clansmen (even if they are really a bit too late in period)
And I have just been painting some Scots cavalry for ECW so these will fit in as cavalry for the Lowland Scots list.

The units that I am struggling to find a figure for is Irish Shot, and Kern Marksmen - both would be armed with early muskets.

The Irish list also includes a Priest unit - again not certain on what figure to use for this - would an ECW style preacher be right, or something more monk like?

I've been looking at the same thing.

There's ELM37 Monks which might need some conversion.
JS2 Jacobite humbly with musket, these guys are dressed in belted plaid so a paint job should hide their origins.
Irish shot could be EL3 or ER11, both are helmeted so late on is reasonable as captured gear would have been in demand.

If you have a look at the 28mm Elizabethan illustrations (formerly Pendraken) on Hoka Hey's website, they give a pretty good guide.

I'm assuming we're talking 10mm Pendraken here, I haven't read through the whole lot.  Apologies if this is irelevant.
Title: Re: Fred - 2018 Painting Diary
Post by: fred. on 31 August 2018, 01:18:08 PM
Yes 10mm, and preferably Pendraken - so the suggestions are useful.

ELM37 is a good shout, I'd forgotten about them. I only need a couple of Priest figures so a bit of conversion would be OK.

I'm using the JS2 musket figures for the Scots shot.  I have EL3, and adding some ER11 would work. Perhaps a mix of all 3. Or I just ignored the 'Irish' bit and use any base of shot?

Does anyone have a photo of ELM34 SHC with handgun? I'm assuming these are cavalry as there are just 15 to a pack?
Title: Re: Fred - 2018 Painting Diary
Post by: SV52 on 31 August 2018, 03:11:29 PM
I'd go with the ignore bit.  I doubt anybody knows what these guys looked like, your guess is at least as good as anyone else's.  ELM 34 is a bit of a mystery, what's SHC anyway? Super Heavy Cavalry?  :)

I presume ELM34 looks like a slightly smaller version of these 15mm

So has anyone actually got any of ELM34? Do they match the 15mm version, i.e. heavy armour, handgun, and unarmored horse? Are they a single pose?

From searching the forum this was asked back in 2012 too. So they seem an elusive figure.

LoA Artillery

Been working on various (many) bits and pieces lately. The ones that are nearest completion are some Dutch and French artillery for my Battle of the Boyne project. The Dutch artillery is heavy guns, and the French lighter ones.

Doing a grand job there, fred!

However, I suggest you revisit your artillery to make the look more plausible. Sorry if this may sound harsh (and considering the trouble you've gone to so far, I know you want them to be their best) but I suggest you think again about the rims of the wheels on the gun carriages. If you think about it. Heavy gun on a heavy carriage. Terrible 17th Century roads. Wood rimmed wheels won't last long. So, I recommend a quick touch up on the rims with some metallic paint and you're there.  :-bd

After all, if they had the technology to put metal hoops on barrels, they also had it for wheels. Meaning well.  :)

p.s. Might want to revisit the trunnions also.  ;)

Not harsh at all - helpful.

I'd not really thought it through - and now having just checked the Barry Hilton pdfs that I have been using as painting guides, I see that he has all the edges of the wheels done in black. This shouldn't be too hard to update.

By revisiting the trunnions, do you mean on the brass barrels, to make them brass? I couldn't decide if the trunnions where enclosed - so the black metal was over the top of them. But you think that they are just 'resting' in the carriage, so would be brass coloured.

Thanks. I'm thinking of the forces involved when you fire a large calibre gun - if it's not strapped down, the gun, when fired, will fly back into the gunners' laps! It just so happens that, today, I painted a Pendraken SYW piece, and the casting had metal fastenings on either side of the trunnions (so I painted the metal straps black). On your LoA gun carriages, has Pendraken incorporated any 'straps' on the carriage to anchor the gun down? (failing which, perhaps consider painting the whole top edge parts of the gun carriage frame black to represent the metal reinforcing bands?)

I take it that you are referring to two of the grey gun carriages, and 1 of the red ones? These are the medium caliber ones, and seem to be cast without any of the strapping on the top of the carriage - unlike the others. As you say painting this black will work to give the impression of the metal reinforcement.

I'll try and remember to do this (and the wheel rims) when I get back to these.

ECW Cavalry

To continue the mass of current in-flight projects - some ECW cavalry.

Firstly 2 bases of generic cavalry, in buff coats and helmets, mainly armed with pistols

Various Scots cavalry, both pistol and lance armed. I think this should give me 4 bases of each. Hiding at the back are a few dragoons as well.

These are in fairly early stages with most of the riders still needing painting, along with various bits of the horses too.  But they are at that tempting level of going, is this good enough?

I think they were just a standard pack of Pendraken ECW cavalry. About half are in lobster pots the rest in Burgonets.

Having another look the Lobster pots appear to be armed with swords, as are the ones I got recently

This past Saturday fought a couple of battles using my German-Danish against Cromwell's New Model Army. Let me just say the lack of Horse in the German-Danish forces was all too well realized!!!

Sorry - as you say they do look as if they could have pistols. And with the scots cavalry I had to look twice to see if they were carrying swords or pistols. I suspect with both a paint job conversion would probably work.

A philosophical question. Are the machines entering or leaving the earth? If entering, then they may well be clear of dirt. If exiting, then one would assume a slightly grubbier appearance.

"But!" I hear you cry, "surely the fact that the bottle cap things are up in the air suggests that the meerkat-finders are exiting?" To that I say "pshh!"

In a civil engineering tunnelling process like underground railways, it is fine to have uni-directional bottle caps. However, these are tactical war engines, that need to be able to go anywhere, so the ability to go in reverse in necessary.

As to dirt - yes, they need a bit of finishing on the base painting front, then need thoroughly weathering, I'm thinking rust and mud.

These are dwarves we are talking about.  All their machines are self-cleaning and also contain micro breweries.

But this is a good idea too...

Leaving the ground - in game they are a delivery mechanism. This does imply that at some point they have entered the ground, but that happens off-table.

Tudor Bills and Shot

The final one of my current in flight projects are some opponents for the Irish forces, some Tudor (or Elizabethan) Bill and Shot. The shot are Pendraken and definitely the right sort of figures, the 'bills' are Warmonger Landschkect halberdiers, they kind of have the right look and more importantly I have loads of these figures,  of which these are the first to get paint on them.

These Warmonger figures are big - not sure if this is deliberate as they are meant to be big soldiers, or its just a bit of scale creep.

(https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/r7QO-qmBOR2y1bi33hyb3GEubDC1ase_ZNDHuHOdyTvAOueapuGpLtAnM_040PcDMnXfucqrVTp5AuyLoSCz3Fsd3bT0kliY7qggGHokZqlBj7EPC0W0IhPYVXxL4GXSWiPVy0kG66uieSU_M7AdaQGbmOGqp2k_NzxO8HLsG9J4m1-Yrd--zH2fyesw8oMbWIEEXW5R6ZL5yIGyEPZmfVfpXoYjszPDCYRDrNNqjGpcjKVVDQz0cmjlarnQaN3g9y6SjxDlYKMJEhkuO6s2o0TtzzVMIJN6_ARIgqw1wowpvaFNvi_rm8JFi3tbdV62EQoPkhochTysRAA9tmRTL04OSpC0Y1knD5BmIL4G03JIuNlGkZZvUv2aMhswOdyXtkxKeX-Iu-2LBTARsHFwAAZxojGfil29kobpm1klxGWg0Yu34xEXKoMtNclDKKzQaos9vTV130oa05cOZBSQaHH6eNwdRqKREqbsaJh1OelKOFjBmdcr1lCzDii-XTrviT5gEwGckryAJBM4fvBUqug-1E2oGJx3dqFpPXL3Zn3inzrldRCfeh1lkfxrUR9Z82eDl6GtSTUMTv05o5anjtux2EcGc1mDagu0UIQ3sGbGzUQjxvWfFRzY41vMuxydVLOpxfNtFFw_4LMKid_4mqZBmnOCCUtKCCswPBhUXIRVALDEE-Kb2cjg8A=w991-h625-no)
This is the state of the figures at the weekend - some more progress has been made, so I'll try and get an up-to-date photo later this evening.
I've probably gone far too uniform on these figures, but in Irregular Wars a base of troops doesn't represent that many real world troops, so I'm happy to believe a smallish cohort might have been equipped in a uniform manner.

They certainly are the business. My suspicion is scale creep. It seems to be endemic at the moment which kind of negates the whole point of 10mm.

Pretty sure the Warmonger figures will be scaled to the GW Warmaster ones, which were on the larger side of 10mm.

Not sure it's quite scale creep, as such.

Its the Warmonger halberdiers that are big - the others I have from Warmonger (crossbows, handguns and pikes) are pretty much the size of Pendraken. If anything they are a touch smaller (less chunky) the GW Warmaster Empire. I've found the Warmaster ranges aren't that well in scale with each other.

Been painted up some 28mm 40k Tau figures the last couple of weeks. Another scale. Another game...

We played a 3 player game on Friday, and I then played through a solo game, Nids vs Tau yesterday afternoon while cooking Sunday dinner.

The Tau were the same Team that I had used in the 3 player game. A Pathfinder Leader, an XV25 Stealth Suit (veteran), Pathfinder Gunner with Ion Rifle (sniper), Pathfinder Gunner with Rail Rifle (Comms), 2 Firewarriors, 1 Breacher, 1 Recon Drone, 2 Gun Drones. So lots of shooting, and good mobility. The only unit with any melee ability is the suit.

For the nids, I went with 2 lictors, one veteran one combat specialists , a melee Tyranid Warrior Leader and a Tyranid  Warrior with a Barbed Strangler. I was rather limited by the figures of my mate's I happened to have on hand.

For the game board I used 4 cardboard game boards from another gaming mate - I think from one of the GW boxed sets that he just wanted the figures for. These work great, they make it very easy to setup and deploy as they mark the game in to quarters. I had been looking at them thinking about making some 3d terrain to match the pictures - but they seem to work fine as is, with just the images giving a look to the ground.

Turn 1
(https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/GZx1jJXCk3q1TOZeGms8m_PuTzYt3KcU4Z-CrsQ1gqFTGj0fmcr5hwR4Xj9NQcm81ZTXaISBy5NCcNgJEwFpm45MwHZh8ovYg3dN8YwQl6MWDKlMgJJzofYlVyJLOEW08Wa-usfiQFQ=w992-h744-no)

Veteran Lictor advanced before the game starts - 9" + 1d6" is a long way forward! Nids win initiative, first turn charge from this Lictor. The other lictor lags behind a bit.
For the Tau their Greater Good rule, allows loads of Overwatch, but to no great effect. The Stealth suit is so close to the start of the Lictors charge that Retreating seems pointless. The drones near the suit move apart a bit to make consolidate moves harder. FLY is very good here as they can still shoot.

For the rest of the Tau readying isn't particularly useful, as with only 1 shooty Nid, and it has first shot, the others mill around a bit to try to improve their positions.

In the shooting phase the Nid Warrior manages to roll 6 shots, I probably should have split these, but instead fire them all at the Ion rifle sniper. Who ends up very dead.

The Tau in the building put loads of fire into the Lictor at the back. 5+ save is a bit rubbish, ends up with 3 wounds and 2 flesh wounds.

The warrior in the building takes a few hits bit saves them all.

The melee is a slap fight. Which isn't good for the lictor, who was really expecting a win, hitting on 2s and wounding on 2s, but the suit saves on 3s.

Turn 2
Tau win initiative.

(https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/FMxOpBG6jxKsIiH8YjhJ9tCEwYpZ3aMqUStWSWy-a2ARpyLxWgf79uBxSGJHKB_TjVqhPG9ptohCDeHVaXH4cPfFBhtstieq2fsvbD3xeArB-ehPlBZlmn9P_62CkRQAOMLthsIZbSg=w992-h744-no)

Suit and drones fall back from the lictor. Drone on the far side moves towards Nid deployment zone.
Lictor that was in melee, charges up on to the second floor - but target (rail rifle pathfinder) retreats, meaning a failed charge. Lictor goes in anyway, as its in cover, and won't have fart to charge next turn.  Tau don't have much overwatch but manage to cause a wound.
Other Lictor drops back, partly chasing drone.
The combat warrior moves through the building.

Tau shoot the lictor off the floor area. And the drone manages to kill the other lictor.
The warrior with the strangler is ineffectual - just 1 attack this turn

Looking a bit tricky for the Nids

Turn 3.
(https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/Urd6xaQ7Mz7EssnpcMBgnREaT-u_M0tannuuEHttnSRH3niSjSY5OUWpwo3tveXGUhfTGSIa3docD8WTERz1sOao3lRJBMgjV4PJ1WzyTZF-TlP-_g8E9OxTsAspIAMClMprZvcGsRI=w992-h744-no)

Warrior in the building waits for a last turn charge onto the objective
Warrior with the strangler readies.

Tau dance around, drone on far side advances round the building.
Tau on the near side advance on the building to try to shoot through the windows - only the breacher gets far enough

Lots of shooting, lit the shooty warrior up with Marker Lights, using 3CP, he makes lots of armour saves...
Warrior with strangler rolls 5 attacks, targets Rail Rifle and Fire Warrior in the building. Gets a wound on the Rail Rifle pathfinder, but he uses a CP to give  a 5+ FnP save which he makes.

Turn 4

(https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-eDQm4f0VLxvHoLZj14xm0OzI0Ve1moozGAJEM6Z-IWnK3EHl8RT46-hPrtTNB4lX0Y6FTQA9SrDmsed2ODpU3SlYp6xGiCFghd_JfIUIBtKCSazibyccf2brEVp0FGvT3hi-09dNZU=w992-h744-no)
Tau move to take middle 2 objectives
Warrior charges Stealth suit on the objective. Ineffectual overwatch from 3 units.

Warrior with the strangler targets the recon drone on the objective, lots of attacks, hits and 2 wounds, and rolls for out of action.  Clearing the objective

Lots of shooting back at warrior causes 2 wounds. Then the drone at the back shoots and kills him
The melee in the middle is another slap fight - the warrior does get 4 hits, and 3 wounds, but the suit saves them all.

Remaining Warrior easily passes break test (Ld 9 is good)

Roll for end of game, ends game, Nids go for a re-roll, and game still ends.

Tau victory 6-2,  1 objective and 3 kills, vs no objectives and 2 kills.

Overall
Interesting game.
The nid list was not ideal. 3 lictors and a shooty warrior might have worked. The melee warrior was just too slow, so I was very cautious with him. But I suspect lictor, warrior, and 8 or so gaunts would be best. With just 2 lictors there is space to run away - although checking Nid tactics Metabloic Overdrive would have helped get the other lictor in on turn 1, which even if it causes a mortal wound isn't a big problem for a lictor.  I also short changed the lictors with 3 wounds, they have 4. They can absorb damage but take quite a lot due to poor save. The warriors made loads of armour saves.

Overwatch - even Tau many shot overwatch doesn't do much against multi-wound models. Or I suspect multiple chargers.

More shots is good! Seems better to shoot more than have few harder hitting shots. With relatively few targets the Tau could concentrate their fire which was very effective.

The smaller table changes things. Also the deployment zones were much bigger, than the deep triangles we used on Friday. Lots of fast nids would have been right in the action very quickly.

Its good that combat focused force seems playable vs a very shooty one.

Matt - Kill Team rules. Lots of my gaming group are big into 40k. But I've never been able to face the effort or cost of full on 40k. Plus I find the rules far too fiddly for the model count involved. Kill Team solves all those problems with something like 5-15 figures doing you steam for most factions.

All you need is the core rule book around £25. You are likely to have terrain and perhaps even figures.

I haven't got much terrain or many 40k figures (back in the day it was always WFB, epic and Bloodbowl) but i'm thinking 40k (and particularly Killteam) would be great to get my young son into the hobby. I'll probably pick up the starter box set and go from there.

So in another whiplash change of priorities, I built and painted some of the GW Kill Team scenery. I was really impressed with these kits, they go together easily, and have lots of options to change up the build by swapping parts, that are cleverly designed to fit together in different ways (e.g. the engines of the big crane and the small driller can be swapped around, as the mounting points for the tracks or the crane arm are the same - very clever. And to be honest not what I was expecting from GW as some of their figures seem setup to be only built in one way.

Just a basic paint job at this stage, a spray of Desert Yellow, with dark grey wheels etc, (going for the Tonka toy look!)

Continuing my retro look at the last couple of weeks...

Fiasco Haul
A group of us went over to Leeds at the end of October for the Fiasco show, we made a weekend of it visiting the Armouries museum on the Saturday, and having beer and a very tasty curry on the Saturday night. Went to the show on the Sunday - and found it was across the plaza from the Armouries not in the museum itself. The appearance of a Spitfire outside (parked) caused us all to question if we had just walked past it without noticing the previous afternoon - but apparently it had arrived early in the morning.

Bought a few bits and pieces

African Animals from Pendraken

Too true, its that rummaging and spotting things that you haven't seen before, that fit with the various games you need things for.

Talking of which... I made two of the Warbases kits tonight, they went together well, only complex bit was working out how the pieces at the far end of the coke can went together (out of the photo).

Not entirely sure about colour schemes, thinking basic grey as a starting point, not sure if the cans should be distinct from the frames?

Got some spraying done this weekend. Managed to spray two 28mm British tanks, one olive drab, one sand - but forgot photos of them...

Also sprayed the sci-fi terrain made with the drink cans, as the cans weren't glued into place at this point they kept falling over in all directions  >:( An empty drinks can is light enough, but then putting some MDF on the top really unbalances it.

Here they are sprayed and glued together, now to add a bit of detailing, might try to find some warning signs online and print them out.

Flocking

Didn't get a lot of hobby stuff done this week, the main thing I did was to flock and add magnetic sheet to a load of 10mm figures that I painted and based a little while ago. this was rather overdue as the LoA figures have already been used in a game with bare brown bases  >:(  :P

Thanks chaps. I'm very impressed with it, it all went together very easily, the pieces are very accurately cut - and its not laser cut, so there is no burnt smell!

The tidying out has been useful, I found many corks I had been saving for making rock or other things on bases - I had so many they wouldn't fit in one of the small drawers - and as only one had been cut up at all, I really didn't need so many.

Paint brushes - how many do  I have!!

Oooh, now I like that!

Would it be worth seeing if they want a UK show distributor? The company is Hobby Zone in Poland. All the sections came very well packed, each in its own box, within the much bigger box. They have clearly put a lot of thought into the whole system. It is completely modular, so each piece (of the 9) can be swapped around to go in different places.

I'd like one but my wife would probably burn it rather than look at it  :(

Mine has been asking if I want another row of drawers for Xmas!!

Aaaargh Clean setup!!

Quick, throw 4-5 in progress projects in front of it, it burns my eyes!!
As you well know Peter I'm quite good at having many projects on the go. So don't worry on that part.

The see through draws make so much sense...
They do - I basically got 1 of each option, and the smaller drawers with the clear fronts are very useful, they are a good size for all the various bits that are needed. The longer drawers are useful for brushes and tools - and come with lots of internal dividers. But I could see myself adding more of the clear front drawers if I need more space. The only one I haven't really worked out what to put in is the tall thin drawer in the corner unit.

Big Stuff

Been painting a few models to add to my KoW Kingdom of Men army (and got some models on to the new painting area)

On the left are a couple of Reaper Bones giants, these were mainly painted by my daughters, I've just done some tidying up and shading on them. In the middle are some Dungeon Saga figures, the big ones at the back are Molochs, which come as red plastic, so they have mainly been washed with black, then dry brushed a bit, to paint the majority of the figure, which seems to work well for what they are. The two heroes come in a dark blue shiny plastic, which is really hard to see any details on, once undercoated they have painted up very nicely with lots of detail actually cast on the figure. There are a bunch more hero figures so might do some more of them.

My mate gave me some plastic spaceships last night - but assembly has been delayed as can't find my plastic cement - all this tidying and organising isn't entirely working...

It would be good to get your daughter involved. Mine have been fairly erratically involved in painting over the years. These were some of their best stuff - but the shear size meant they were bored before the giants where finished. But I  really pleased with the colours they have used, as these aren't the ones I'd have chosen. And there is very little finishing off left to do.

Many many moons ago when my daughter was still at her all girls high school they were reading a book about Kiwis fighting in Crete. The teacher tasked the class with creating an art project related to the book

My daughters effort stood out amongst the various posters and collages ;)

She had reproduced a scene from the book with a bren gunner covering a path near a scratch built buiding ;D
All her own work with only advice from Dad :)

Space Ships

Found the plastic cement - it hadn't been miss-placed in the tidy up for the new drawers, it was through in the conservatory, between two piles of stuff. I found it when tidying stuff up ready for Christmas.

So I was able to stick together some spaceships, they as Dropzone Commander models that my mate got as part of a Kickstarter a couple of years ago, and hadn't got round to doing anything with yet. I think we are more likely to use the Billion Sun rules, which are upcoming ones from Osprey rather than the DZC ones, which look very complex. The ships went together well, and I do quite like the look of them.

There is also a larger cruiser that I put together after taking the photo
