"Anyone who sits on top of the largest hydrogen-oxygen fueled system in the world, knowing they're going to light the bottom, and doesn't get a little worried, does not fully understand the situation."

I should read earthsea again, and the ship who sang, and...
Also Howard lewis for those for whom "pancake day, pancake day, p p p p pancake day!" Is a find remembered memory.
She's crossed into the Dry Land too? For the sake of her earlier books, she is much to be mourned (but why, oh why, didn't the Earthsea Trilogy take the hint in its name and skip those disastrous later sequels?).
I think she'd gotten fed up with people not heeding her and made the message of her work into a club, not a needle...
I haven't read the later ones, or watched the mini-series; she seemed to think it was bobbins...
The last ones are stories carrying meanings that the plot and characters don't support. Extremely disappointing.

We went the exact same route, once FM Montgomery had left us and after many tears ACM Arthur Harris arrived, much to our delight.
You know what's nice to see here though. It's what effects us the most: not the passing of some (most probably deeply flawed) "celebrity" but the real loss we feel when we lose someone we love - especially our devoted feline and canine chums.

I had the distinction by association of sharing a house with him in 1983-84. It was only proximity, however; we never met socially.
My Mum used to see him a fair bit whizzing round Cambridge when she was a bed maker for Gonville & Caius College. I saw him once en passant. Loved his book, 'A Brief History of Time' which is eminently readable, even for someone who really didn't enjoy science at school. A life certainly well lived.

I ploughed through "A Brief History of Time". It is, as you say very enjoyable and well written, however, I found that my poor brain would understand the page I read but as soon as I turned the page *poof* it vanished like Cossacks before an Orc horde.

That's the chap. If I remember right he was brought in as a consultant to get the actors up to speed to play that role, but none of them were up to it. When he ranted at the director for a straight 10 minutes, he was given the part instead. He also did a cool show on the History channel called Lock 'n' Load, where he went through the development of modern weapons (and fired them of course!)
I believe he chewed out a bunch of extra's, not Kubrick himself. And indeed, unusually for a Kubrick film, he was allowed to ad lib while being filmed.

Obviously sad, but in the midst of all the effusive "celebrity" comments a dose of reality: I met an ITV cameraman at a party once who claimed that he was the worst person to work with. He insisted all the cameras be a little higher than his eye line so that they all looked down on him oh so slightly to avoid seeing his double chin! Hence all the cameraman worked on boxes or their tippy toes! ???
Crikey, he was only 62! Can't say I found him a compelling presenter either, but the double chin flap is amusing.

Jacquline Pearce was damned hot as Servlan!
From IMDb - "Personal Quote: [on her role in Blake's 7 (1978)] I'd been a masturbatory fantasy for an entire generation of young men. I mean, that made a girl feel good."
:D

Yep, heard that a few minutes ago :(.....I loved his dry sense of humour.
There was also Dudley Sutton, a couple of days ago......He played 'Tinker' in the Lovejoy series.

Seconded :(
Very sad

Andy
Sad but he had a damned good innings.
did no one pick up on the death of the actress Liz Fraser on Sept 6?
Chas Hodges from Chas and Dave.
That's very sad. :(
I saw Chaz and Dave when they were the support act to Eric Clapton.....Eons ago.
They were terrifically entertaining.

Another huge shock! With both Greg and Carlos going in short order it feels like my teenage years are finally over :(
Glorantha was my favourite fantasy world and place to game for many years and Strontium Dog is my favourite comic characer of all time.
I'm feeling a bit sad at the moment... :-<
'Died in his sweat lodge... on a spiritual quest for enlightenment"... erm... yeah... :-
Runequest was my proper entry to actual Roleplaying gaming - D&D was more of a skirmish wargame (and still is). Sad loss.
Actually true - Greg Stafford was an honest to god shaman and practitioner of the arts arcane and spiritual. And possessed his own much used sweat lodge :D
The whole corpus of "miffic Glorantha" is explicitly a rendering of his life long interest in miffic shamanism (now sadly terminated, unless he's actually gone off to Heroquest somewhere and gotten lost).

Oh, I know he was, I followed the whole saga up to Hero Quest. But exactly what that
involved is a different thing...
I gather it involved a lot of direct action as opposed to theoretical research; one comment on his remembrance blog amused me - the commenter had hoped to grab Greg after a Con only to find he'd already flown off so as to catch a ritual in the air for the eclipse that was hitting then!

Stan Lee, aged 95. :'(

Stan Lee, aged 95. :'(
My daughter and I used to love watching for his cameo roles in the films.
Alas. My Dad. Aged 92. 9pm Saturday.
As a teenager he acted as a bicycle messenger taking messages to and from some of the AA batteries defending Rosyth. As a dockyard electrical engineer, just after the war, he was involved in the refurbishment or decommissioning of small ships (destroyers and smaller) at Rosyth.
Without his insistence to my mother that collecting, painting and playing with toy soldiers was a phase I'd grow out of I might well not have been a gamer.
To be honest, I think life had become a burden and he would not have been sad to go.
My condolences to all involved.
My condolences.
My condolences, I'm sorry to hear this.
Sorry to hear that Mike.
Sympathy.
Mike,
Many condolences. Hugs
Remember the good times.

Sad to hear Pete Shelley has died, this was one of my favourite tunes as a teenager

Never noticed before, how much the young Pete Shelley looked like a young Pete Townshend.
A great shame. :(

June Whitfield! :'(
Yep, a sad loss but what a great body of work left behind for us to remember her by.
Also a day before, Sister Wendy Becket, a great presenter on TV of art history.

Yes, very sad for both. Curiously, I was talking to people following a visit to the Vatican museum, and we were remembering Sister Wendy, only a few days ago. Two great women, with a tremendous legacy.
I think M has said it all. :(
