5) How many players were in the game? - two
6) What went well? Not much, I was annihilated twice!
7) What could have been improved? Massing my fleet, buying some serious capital ship support, Pete brought no fighters and three large capital ships, whereas I had one. He tore me to pieces, twice!!!  :'( ;D
Oh well!

1) What ruleset do you use in your last game? -  A Hundred Circling Camps
2) What armies were confronted? -  Geen-yu-ine Sutth'n Gen'lm'n and Dam' Yankees
3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset? - Yup
4) and... was this the first time you used this ruleset? -  Nope
5) How many players were in the game? - Two

The new:
6) What went well?  Got off a broadside from naval support early on and took out US c-in-c with a very lucky shot
7) What could have been improved? -  Everything else. It's very useful to have a spotter balloon, as the Union did. The South will not be capturing New York this season. :(

1) What ruleset do you use in your last game? - Rebels & Patriots
2) What armies were confronted? - AWI British and Americans
3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset? - In the playtest stage, but all pretty familiar
4) and... was this the first time you used this ruleset? - Yes
5) How many players were in the game? - Solo
6) What went well? - The British tactics.
7) What could have been improved? - As the rules and scenarios are still being developed, some minor tweaks here and there.

So 2 games so far and very impressed with what I've seen. Nice excuse to move on with my AWI forces as they stalled last year.

1) What ruleset do you use in your last game? -            Muskets & Tomahawks
2) What armies were confronted? -                              French against British
3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset? -              We're starting to get the hang of it...
4) and... was this the first time you used this ruleset? -  Not for me although still very green; for the other guys it was the first time
5) How many players were in the game? -                    3 in total; the other two playing the French side; me the British

The new:
6) What went well?                                                    The French actions in general...  :(
7) What could have been improved?                            Most on my part; main lesson learned: the fact thet regulars are solid and can hold their ground despite horrific losses doesn't mean they should... pulling back would have been much better really. Just as attacking bloodthirsty Indians in a melee to try and expel them from a house... not very smart either.

Cheers,
Rob

2) Krvak and Orc
3) Yes very
4) Not for me, my opponent yes but he has played CWC quite a few times.
5) 2
6) Plated well
7) Krvak, Orc's proved rather brittle, and hard to get moving.

Still, I enjoyed it as the Orc player.

The new:
6) What went well? A British coordinated attack on a German held village
7) What could have been improved? Dice rolling! The British had 8 moves to the Germans 3 at the start of the game, thus unbalancing the game so that it became a turkey shoot.

7) What could have been improved? Charging Catafracts with legionaries. Hand to hand with another legion vs Pikes.

A big win for Rome, 15-6

1) What ruleset do you use in your last game? -  Ten More Sons!
2) What armies were confronted? -  Ming Chinese vs Ava Burmese
3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset? -  Very, apart from being out of practice with the more obscure Chinese firearms
4) and... was this the first time you used this ruleset? -  Far from it
5) How many players were in the game? - Two
6) What went well? - I did win. Burmese elephants shot to bits, and we held most attacks effectively, even by their better troops.
7) What could have been improved? - Off-table flank march caused me some trouble, and a unit of routed Burmese cavalry rallied and returned to the fight, with unwelcome results. These were not flaws in the rules, however. I have been reminded that I need to make a few cheat sheets for ease of play. Also bothered that the Burmese have yet to win a battle.

1) What ruleset did you use in your last game? -  Ten More Sons!
2) What armies were confronted? -  Imperialists vs French, renaissance
3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset? -  Very
4) and... was this the first time you used this ruleset? -  Far from it
5) How many players were in the game? - Two
6) Is Ian hung like a hamster? - Well, I don't want to discuss that here.
7) What went well? - I did win. Some of my weaker troops had very lucky rolls, and my gensd'armes and Switzers did not disappoint me.
8) What could have been improved? - It was raining for much of the battle, which hindered my superior artillery (though they enjoyed a bit too much luck as well), but also mucked up Spanish and Landsknecht smallarms. My cavalry got stuck in the mud a few times, but the imperial forces had command difficulties to offset that.

Renaissance battles are fun!

3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset? - very
4) and... was this the first time you used this ruleset? - no!
5) How many players were in the game? - 2
6) What went well? From my point of view, it was Orcs forgetting he could use his off table artillery to drop smoke. =) Advancing his Kiwi infantry across a big open space against dug in Italians did not go well :d (even though most of my COs kept failing their command rolls!).
7) What could have been improved? The Italian command rolls!! ;D

7) Is it true what they say about you Africans? - Yes, actually.
7) What could have been improved? - Desperately poor performance by the agema cavalry; held up most of the game by a handful of velites.

3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset? - absolutely definitely
4) and... was this the first time you used this ruleset? -no
5) How many players were in the game? - 14 playing over the weekend
6) What went well? Taking apart Selucids, holding off against the Parthains until they made a mistake and smashing them
7) What could have been improved? My mood when playing a cheesy list full of charging knights and light infantry in skirmish that I couldn't catch!
Event was held at 'The Dice Saloon' in Brighton, cracking shop, with cafe, licence, and loads of playing spaces. It was busy from the moment we got there until long after we left, but not just grumpy-middle-aged-white-men. All ages, races, sexes, mostly playing card and board games, some Xwing and D&D, friendly, helpful staff and great food.
Best bit of all, I won 'Best Sportsman'

This caught me completely by surprise.

Perhaps your mood wasn't as obvious as you thought, or more likely the cheese was so smelly that the game didn't count ;)

1) What ruleset do you use in your last game? - Poseidon's Warriors
2) What armies fleetswere confronted? - Rome vs Carthage, 1st Punic War
3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset? - Actually, yes
4) and... was this the first time you used this ruleset? - Actually. Yes!
5) How many players were in the game? - 2
6) What went well? Everything, my two fleets looked awesome on a friend's sea mat. Roman shipboard artillery was effective in breaking up Carthaginian formations, Carthaginians smashed into Romans, their rams sending many warriors to meet Neptune. However, if the sturdy Roman Quinqueremes survived the ram, the Roman Corvii grappled the Carthaginians, and because the Romans had more marines, the Carthaginians lost a lot of ships to boarding actions!
At the point where we had both lost 12 ships each, and needed to roll 4+ to stay fighting. (Fleets being under 1/4 and 1/2 strength causes morale tests, as does the loss of an Admiral) the Romans passed, and the Carthaginians didn't... They turned tail to limp off and lick their wounds.
7) What could have been improved? Really, not much. It was great!
It's a good game. Simple, fast (unless you're a Roman galley with a Corvus fitted) lethal and great fun. Combats are deadly. Rules are simple, but well thought out. They work well and give a good effect.
Next game booked for a month!

1) What ruleset do you use in your last game? - Bloody Big Battles, twice over
2) What armies were confronted? -  Crimean War - Russians on one side, French/British/Turks on the other
3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset? - Myself, yes. The two new/ish players pretty much, definitely so by the end of the second game
4) and... was this the first time you used this ruleset? - Not at all, and not even for the two scenarios played!
5) How many players were in the game? - Three in the first, two in the second
6) What went well? - Rules/metagame wise, everything. The rules are simple and play easily, and are understandable very quickly. In game... my coordination as the Allies was pretty poor and I was rather overconfident.
7) What could have been improved? - First game the Russians needed to push harder, earlier. Second game I really needed to not get tricked by their feint!

We played the "small" Balaclava "training scenario at the club a few Wednesdays ago. Myself as the rather stretched Allies, two clubmates as the hordes of Russians. One had played before (he defended half the Alma line previous scenario!) but isn't massively confidant/assertive (he's a strip of a lad and only done any wargaming at all very recently!) and a new club chap whose rather more outgoing and confident; they were both au fait with the rules within a turn or two, but getting the shambling hordes of Russians to do what you want is hard work (in game terms they're Passive and lack generals - the infantry is very "lurch forwards-stop just when you wanted to carry on-someone else lurches off on their own", and getting the guns up and unlimbered somewhere useful is a nightmare!). Their attacks on the Causeway redoubts went in well enough, and one unit slipped past the embattle Turkish gunners and towards Balaclava proper. That ran into the Turks and the 93rd/RM and got shot up, the supporting cavalry did much the same. I couldn't hold them off the Causeway though, despite a brave sacrifice of both the Heavy and Light Brigade.

I'd tried to envelop the attackers on the middle redoubt with the 93rd and Turks from the south and the cavalry from the north but the sheer mass of Russians just kept forcing me back and my losses told more than theirs - The tiny two base British units suffer - all it takes is a reasonably lucky shot with a decent amount of firepower and they lose a stand and are gone. Their Veteran and Skirmish ratings help keep them up but it's always knife edge once the RUssians get a firing line together. Worse for the cavalry as they can't shoot and have to rely on reckless charges!

However, this bought me time. British reinforcements arrived and started off to clear down the Causeway. I realised at the last minute they wouldn't make it to the end two objectives so diverted north to seize the one on the Fedoukine Heights as it was barely held by the Russians but too late - we had to call time at turn 5 of 6, which had turned a possible allied recovery and win into a definite draw. The guns on the hills and works at Balaclava did heroic service in support of the troops penning the Russians on the Causeway, and when a big Russian brigade slipped through the gaping hole in my lines and headed first for the objective above Kadikoi and then onto Balaclava they shot it up so badly it ground to a halt! Fortunate as that would have given the Russians the game and then some.

If they'd pushed a little more aggressively early on, or been able to muster enough units to support each other on a drive to Kadikoi/Balaclava they'd have had a handy win. The cavalry and the Turks and the 93rd/RM sacrifices were not in vain, but it's a very tight scenario for either side I think.

Second scenario was at the boardgames meet my sister & BiL help run on a weekend in Wolves. This time just me and Harri (younger club mate), again with him taking the Russians and me the Allies but this time at Inkerman in the fog. This did not go well for the Allies. Mind, it wasn't exactly a ringing success for the Russians in terms of losses, either! The scenario has three set objectives for the Russian, and three "possible" objectives of which one (chosen in secret) is real... they also have a choice on reinforcements - the historical attack in the north against the British, or what was Gorkachov's feint in the south against the French being the real attack. I got completely faked out and assumed the "dummy" objective that was real was one of the British positions, then "worked out" it was definitely Sandbag Battery. I'd shifted my meagre reserves north and was moving them east to Sandbag when a shedload of Russians appeared in the south and assaulted the French on Sapoune Ridge!

The fog was brutal to us both. I couldn't use my musketry range advantage, Harri couldn't get his guns into action without being shot to pieces unlimbering at grapeshotte and musket range. When either of us had the fog lift or got in close enough to fire (I think five full turns of seven were at 3" visibility?!) it was brutal. I'd foolishly started to shift the French unit at the Woronzov Redoubt to enfilade and shatter the few initial shambling Russian units there so they could then release someone to go help the British in the north. Thus one of the big French units was caught out of position, and despite a valiant and bloody attempt to fight its way back got surrounded and shot and sabred down. The Russians them steamrollered into the Redoubt before my reinforcements could change direction and occupy it. The Sapoune Redoubt held, but the repeated Russian assaults all over the shop meant I couldn't leave anywhere undefended as it would either concede or open the flanks of the other objectives.

At this point the RUssians looked to be on course for a draw as Lancaster and Home Batteries were holding well enough, and it looked like a swift envelopment of the Russians there would free up more troops for the south. As I ordered the men forwards the fog lifted. The Russian guns emerged, their riflemen found the range, and almost all the small British units got shot up and lost a base, removing them! Those two base units are very fragile :S This left just an artillery battery holding Home, and with their first good set of coordinated movement rolls the Russians swept it aside and occupied it in force! With my reinforcements having had to go south and the troops on Gordons and Lancaster fully engaged (against to be fair dwindling and badly mauled Russians who'd suffered hideously!), there was literally no way I could retake it.

Guaranteed Russian draw, and a victory for them hinged around the Woronzov Redoubt. The gallant Franco-British reinforcements kicked them out once, then were ground back again as the Russians seized it en masse, and the rest of their troops staggered and shambled up the steep slopes to protect it. Even fairly fresh and vastly better quality the Allies troops just couldn't get back through the mass of Russians swarming across it, and as the fog lifted fully were forced to retire back towards the now rather truncated and perilously exposed siege lines.

The Russians had bought Sevastopol another few months of resistance, although at the cost of thousands of lives. Actual Allied casualties weren't too bad, but whilst Harri's determination to stick to the plan and spend lives to keep me pinned and confused had paid off in the strategic terms it had gutted the regiments involved, costing them thousands of casualties and no few guns. Still, come the Chernaya they would be in good stead and the survivors buoyed up by victory!

2) What armies were confronted? - Geenyuine Sutth'n Genn'lm'n and Dam' Yankees
3) Did you feel comfortable with ths ruleset? - Sho' 'nuff.
4) and... was this the first time you used this ruleset? - No
5) How many players were in the game? - Two
6) What went well? - Finally got the timing right in launching my cavalry charges (admittedly, once was blind luck. I broke a Yankee flank just by getting the jump in movement order; had they got the jump on me, my horse would have been the victims. But I was risking a dime to win a dollar). The pursuit of the beaten Northerners after the battle was deadly.
7) What could have been improved? - Could have had Halle Berry as one of the players. That aside, got my Virginia foot blown to bits by Yankee artillery, which took some of the pleasure out of cutting down the Iron Brigade and the Arizona Zouaves.

6) What went well? - Rules/metagame wise, nothing.

I hope you meant that as the answer to "What could have been improved"!  ;)

Many thanks for terrific reports of what sound like exciting seesaw battles. Hopefully young Harri is gaining in confidence as he gains experience, as well as having a good time along the way.

Cheers!

Duuuuurp, yes, that was the "what could have been improved" question :D

Yeah, not a lot of improvement needed if any there, Chris.

On my proof reading/reading the question skills however...

Yes, pretty seesaw/knife-edge for both. The Russians are a very tough army to fight with, they're like a massive sledgehammer except it's made of flesh and very soggy and when your brain tells your arm to do something the nerves don't always fire :D The Allies quality (and indeed quantity in most of the Crimea battles) is easily a match for them but then the Russians don't need much to claim at least a morale victory, so you have to really perform commanding the Franco-Brits!

2) What armies were confronted? -  Crimean War - Russians on one side, French/British/Turks on the other
3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset? - Myself, yes. The two new/ish players pretty much, definitely so by the end of the second game

Good write up - any pictures?

Sadly not, I get far too into the game! On top of that we're using my 2mm Irregular blocks on a pvc printed battlemap - much as I like them and love the cost and ease of use they're not amazing visually!

1) What ruleset do you use in your last game? -  Age of Sigmar starter set

2) What armies were confronted? -  Chaos vs Sigmar's eternal bois

3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset? - Nope

4) and... was this the first time you used this ruleset? - Yes

5) How many players were in the game? - 3

The new:
6) What went well?  We got to play something new for everyone, some of us have played WHFB years ago.

7) What could have been improved?  A lot as to be expected in a starter set, these weren't the real AoS rules.   Its very streamlined, but its bland.   I miss running Brettonians or Dwarves in WHFB

1) What ruleset do you use in your last game? - Mortiem et Gloriam
2) What armies were confronted? - White Sheep Turkmen vs Ottoman Turks
3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset? - yes, but neither of us had used these armies before.
4) and... was this the first time you used this ruleset? - nope
5) How many players were in the game? - two

The new:
6) What went well? White Sheep could stand up in a fight to Ottomans, and broke their cavalry centre, nearly taking a unit of Jannisary's too!
7) What could have been improved? For me, not much, superb thinking game, which will get its full write up tomorrow.

1. BBB

2. Ausrtians v. French 1859

3. Very comfortable, played many times

5. Two players

6. A tense game which went the whole 7 moves of the Montebello scenario.

7. In terms of game rules nothing. In terms of individual game play: when rolling on the firing table, the number of 'one year out' rolls was phenomenal on both sides, the most common being when an eight was needed a seven was rolled. The French had two turns where attempted assaults rolled low and failed to materialise, which allowed Austrian reinforcements to appear. One of those was a unit of Grenzers who managed to take the northern French village whilst the French were otherwise engaged. Despite a valiant assault, the French were thrown back in turn seven and the Austrians claimed the victory.

1) What ruleset do you use in your last game? - Mortiem et Gloriam
2) What armies were confronted? - Late Achaemenid Persians (me) vs. Classic Indian (Grant)
3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset? - yes
4) and... was this the first time you used this ruleset? - 2nd time for me, 1st for Grant
5) How many players were in the game? - two

The new:
6) What went well? For me, nothing. I lost my entire left flank which consisted of cavalry to elephants and chariots. Other than that,  despite the length of the rules they really are quite easy to understand. The charge, shooting and other combat mechanics are really very easy.
7) What could have been improved? I should have charged his archers and elephants sooner with my hoplites. I was too apprehensive of them and allowed the Indians to dictate the battle.

Interest in MeG is starting to build here in Texas. There's a tournament in Austin next month which Grant will attend and since I've played once before I agreed to run a few learning games.

1) What ruleset do you use in your last game? - To the Strongest
2) What armies were confronted? - Paphlagonia vs Latium (Imaginations armies)
3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset? - Pretty much
4) and... was this the first time you used this ruleset? - 3rd or 4th time for me, 1st for Keith, my opponent.
5) How many players were in the game? - Two
6) What went well? - Keith picked up the mechanics pretty quickly and I kept the game pretty simple, so that we could focus on mechanics, rather than the detailed rules. In the end two easy wins for me and both games went along at a fair old lick.
7) What could have been improved? - A better QRS sheet with a tad more detail added, to save looking through the rulebook. Things such as bonus cards for flank attacks etc. just to help cover the major things during the game.

2) What armies were confronted? - Franco-Reichesarmee v Prussians
3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset? - No
4) and... was this the first time you used this ruleset? - Yes
5) How many players were in the game? - Six
6) What went well? - Not a lot!
7) What could have been improved? - A QRS sheet in needed as these are detailed rules that have many charts. Found them to be slow, detailed and clunky as a set of rules. After three nights play we decided to abandon the game. I doubt we will revisit these rules again.

Here are a couple of pictures of the game.

1) What ruleset do you use in your last game? - BBB - but a stripped-down version for operational-level games
2) What armies were confronted? - 1796 Revolutionary French vs Piedmontese
3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset? - Yes, gratifyingly so
4) and... was this the first time you used this ruleset? - Only our second time with this version
5) How many players were in the game? - 5 players, including Dave T in a proper French hat (he's a reenactor as well)

I generally spare y'all on this thread from being bombarded with posts about my regular BBB games. This one was a bit different and special though. The scenario was an operational-level game that fits a week of action, encompassing three historical battles, spanning a rugged 30km battlefield, onto a 6'x4' table and <90 minutes of playing time. This is the second in a set of scenarios planned to accompany the forthcoming translation of Clausewitz's history of the 1796 campaign.

Dave W has been busily painting up his 10mm Pendraken armies for our 1796 games ... but hasn't finished enough yet, so we had to use 2mm, sorry!

1) They Died for Glory

2) Two identical French and Prussian 1870 avant-garde forces

3) Very comfortable with this old set, first played in the early 90s

5) This was a solo playtest to see whether my downsizing worked

6) Using samesize bases with a combat value, rather than number of figures to show strength, worked extremely well, as did using a half size table and cm instead of inches.

7) I needed to re-read the rule on voluntary and conditional fallbacks, amalgamations and rallying

1) What ruleset do you use in your last game? - Mortiem et Gloriam
2) What armies were confronted? - my Sassanid Persians vs Greco-Bactrian
3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset? - indeed
4) and... was this the first time you used this ruleset? - nope
5) How many players were in the game? - two and a neutral observer
6) What went well? Royal Asavran taking a full charge in the flank, turning round and beating up the unit that tried it! Catching two skirmishing cavalry units and running them over. Skirmishers repeatedly beating other skirmishers who should have run them over. Catching Catafracts in the flank
7) What could have been improved? Not letting my Catafracts get tractor beamed off into the distance by Bactrian light horse. Getting drawn out in all directions. Losing all my average horse archers to worse opponents!

Great game vs a master of cavalry armies. Lost 6-15, which is quite a positive result for me, quick rewrite of the list tomorrow and all is great.

1) What ruleset do you use in your last game?           Black Powder
2) What armies were confronted?                             Union vs Confederate
3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset?             Yes

This was a really good game. Two Union brigades faced a surprise attack by four Reb brigades, with 3 more Union brigades marching down a road to reinforce them. The reinforcements arrived from turn 2 on a 4+, once the first brigade was on he could test for the second etc. As the Rebs I decided to pin his front with two brigades and send the third on a flanking manoeuvre. The last brigade, which was a small one, would take a small wood at the end of the Union line, near the entry point for the reinforcements and try to stop them out-flanking us.

It worked brilliantly for me, after a slow start the flank attack crashed into the Union line and rolled it up. The Union reinforcements were slow to arrive, and when the did the first brigade on promptly blundered and marched off in the wrong direction. Once they were, on the space was so congested they could not deploy their guns or make a firing line, but had to feed their units in piecemeal. The attempt to out-flank the Rebs through the wood was bloodily repulsed. I was greatly helped by my opponent's inability to pass a morale test, in fact at one point he felt he had succeeded by rolling a 'Retire Disordered' instead of a 'Rout'! ???  It was like playing Last Hussar :d

The game ended when the third Union brigade broke, the Rebs had only lost 3 regiments! Medals all round to the regiment that led my flanking attack, they destroyed three Union regiments and a gun battery in 4 successive turns of melee combat! 8)

I really like Black Powder, I know it has it's critics and I agree the basic rules offer a rather vanilla game that is neither fish nor fowl. But treating it as a template to build upon with period specific amendments makes it into a great game. Glory Hallelujah! does a fine job for the ACW.

That does sound like a stirring game. I must admit that Glory Hallelujah is the best of the Black Powder supplements, although I don't play Napoleonics, so can't comment on the Albion etc supplements. I did find the C18th supplement rather disappointing. However, my major beef with BP is the overly chatty style resulting in crucial rules being hidden in mountains of superfluous text.

There is an index file now for Black Powder Rules

Go to rules of choice for you, I'm betting :D

Yeah we definitely do like Rapid Fire Rules at Grimsby Wargames Society but then that was where they were born

You don't often see opposed river crossing games, must have been "interesting" ;)

The river crossing game was organised by Mike Barnatt using all his figures and vehicles in 20mm we won't mention that bit lol.
All the scenery belongs to the Grimsby Wargames Society.

It was actually really difficult to get a cross as I was under constant fire and most of my forces were obliterated in the water I never actually managed to get to the opposite bank thankfully my other Russian allies managed to get a cross.

It turned out to be an absolutely fantastic game lots of laughs were had and I dare say will play The Same game again at some point.

Is definitely worth playing something like this as it's not the normal you have to think about smoke trying to obscure your troops in the river and of course moving as quickly as you can

Take care

Yesterday we had a great day at our club where amongst other games I ended up 'running' 4 games - its a long story.

In chronological order.

Game 1

1) What ruleset did you use in your last game?           Twilight of Divine Reason
2) What armies were confronted?                             Battle of Fleurus 1622, Spanish vs Protestants
3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset?             Yes
4) and... was this the first time you used this ruleset? For 1 player yes, the other had played a single game before
5) How many players were in the game?                   2 + 1/4 of an umpire
6) What went well?                                                 The scenario worked
7) What could have been improved?                         The players not passing every army morale test and most morale tests!

This was a test of a 'small starter' scenario for the rules with the Spanish having strong infantry but weak cavalry and the Protestants the opposite. It was a cracking game that we expected to be over soon and the plan was they would then play another battle (Cheriton 1644). But both players kept passing their unit morale tests and later on when casualties mounted their army morale test and so it turned into a real bloodbath. It was technically a Spanish victory but there was very little of their army left to celebrate it.

Game 2

1) What ruleset did you use in your last game?           Twilight of Divine Reason
2) What armies were confronted?                             Battle of Cropredy Bridge 1644, Royalist vs Parliament
3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset?             Yes
4) and... was this the first time you used this ruleset? For 1 player yes, the other had played before
5) How many players were in the game?                   2 + 1/4 of an umpire
6) What went well?                                                 A flowing game with a lot of movement, unusual for this period
7) What could have been improved?                         The scenario worked generally but some tweaks were needed

The game starts with only a small number of Royalist on table, the rest arrive as reinforcements. This meant the Royalists were initially very hard pressed and were forced back to their reinforcement arrival point with loses. But the rest of the Royalist army was arriving and they managed to form a fighting line and stabilise the situation. With more Royalists arriving they switched to the attack with some success when disaster struck - the King was killed when rallying a wavering unit! From then on it was, not surprisingly, downhill for the Royalists a relatively easy Parliamentarian victory. It would probably also have meant an end to the war with Waller, the commander at this battle, as the Parliamentarian hero of the war.

Game 3

1) What ruleset did you use in your last game?           Twilight of the Sun King
2) What armies were confronted?                             Jacobite vs Williamite, 1690
3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset?             Yes
4) and... was this the first time you used this ruleset? No
5) How many players were in the game?                   4 + 1/4 of an umpire
6) What went well?                                                 The scenario worked and gave a good looking game
7) What could have been improved?                         The Jacobite commander forgetting to bring all of his cavalry.

This was a test run of the game we will run at an upcoming show, the WMMS (Alumwell to locals) show in March. It is a fictional scenario set after the Battle of the Boyne. The Jacobite rearguard are trying to hold off the Willaimite advance guard. It was a hard fight for a time but the decisive blow came when the Jacobites 'stand in' cavalry - spare Williamite cavalry taking the place of the missing Jacobites - defeated their immediate opponents. They had the chance to win the battle by pressing on or playing safe. The player choose to press on but with limited success and was eventually defeated. A very close game that could have gone either way.

Game 4

1) What ruleset did you use in your last game?           Mit Blut Und Eisen
2) What armies were confronted?                             French vs Prussian 1870
3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset?             Yes
4) and... was this the first time you used this ruleset? 1 player had played before, the others had not played a game before
5) How many players were in the game?                   4 + 1/4 of an umpire
6) What went well?                                                 The system and game worked well - the idea of the game was to get more people interested in this era
7) What could have been improved?                         More troops! The group are short of figures for this era so hopefully the players will now buy more.

The game was a fictional fight with 2 French Corps vs 4 Prussian Corps, but only 2 Prussians initially. The French started on table in a defensive position and 2 of the Prussian Corps marched on to attack them, the other two were under the command of the experienced player and would arrive as reinforcements. This meant the Prussians were initially outnumbered and so player cautiously awaiting the arrival of the the other 2 corps. The French attempted to take advantage of this to beat up parts of the 2 Prussian corps on table. They had some success at this when the other 2 Prussian corps arrived partially behind the French flank - it was a random roll for when they arrived and where.

To cope with this the French pulled back to their original position, or at least most of them did. Depending on who you believe one unit stubbornly held its ground as the rearguard to give the rest time to pull back, a more balanced view might be they kept failing to move. The unit kept failing to move but proved to be stubborn and so 'fought to the last man' & slowed the Prussians a little. We also had at this point a 'give me 5 minutes' moment. One of the French players who didn't know the period tried to rescue the beleaguered unit by charging with his cavalry - he lost the entire division in a single turn.

In any case the French mostly got back into their position but had been weakened. Pressing their advantage the Prussians moved in for the kill. To cut a long story short the French corps, 2nd, most battered by earlier events failed it's Corps morale and thus exposed the French position. The new players seemed to enjoy the game and one at least has decided to get some figures.

I dunno, that sounds like he actually WAS thinking like a heavy cavalryman of the time :D

And his assumptions rudely abused just like the real ones...

And that's a lot of games, nice one - I'll see if I can wander over for a bit at WMMS, I'm hoping we'll have a cavalcade to run ours again so I'll have time for a wander.

1. BBB Mars la Tour in 10mm (Photo AAR to follow)

2. Prussia v. French Imperial

3. Extremely comfortable with this set and have played many times - all games thus far have been FAW, ACW and FPW.

5. Two player game - approx 3 hours encompassing 11 moves

6. The game flowed well and was again nail-biting to the last move. Could a six base French unit successfully assault Vionville and claim a draw - The luckless, passive, out of command French rolled a three - victory to Prussia.

7. The French could have done with a lot more luck when rolling for movement. Their passivity and lack of commanders resulting in a lot of no or half moves. At least three French batteries were unable to unlimber all game. All very historical though.

1. TDFG - first scenario in Grant and Asquith

2. Imperial French v. Confederation Prussians 1870

3. Pretty comfortable, although the rules play fast and loose with the words fallback, retreat and rout so we had to define what is falling back facing the enemy and what is fleeing backs to the enemy, so decided any morale failure and melee defeat rated as a rout but voluntary fallback is a steady withdrawal facing the enemy.

4. Rules of choice between first publication and about 2002. This was only my second game since then, but very enjoyable and about 2 1/2 hours for 12 moves.

5. 2 players

6. Game flowed well and easy to keep track of what was going on

7. Prussians must learn to skirmish ahead of deploying guns to protect them.

Had a busy weekend gaming-wise, my son was up from Christchurch for work on Friday so stayed the weekend :)

On Saturday we went to see the Scale of our War Exhibition at Te Papa (National Museum) and to revisit the Great War Exhibition, including the Chunuk Bair diorama we both painted figures for :)

5) How many players were in the game? - Six
6) What went well? Most things
7) What could have been improved? - The progress of my son's Chariots against a single element of Light horse from the broken right wing, the Light horse kept rolling 5 or 6 in combat ~X(

Sunday morning
1) What ruleset do you use in your last game? - Flames of War :-[ It's the second set he ever played, so a bit of nostalgia
2) What armies were confronted? - Germans  v Free French, Tunisia March 1943

) What ruleset do you use in your last game? - Mortem et Gloriam
2) What armies were confronted? - Late Achaemenid Persians vs. Alexandrian Macedonians
3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset? - yes. It was my third time to play and the rules are coming more naturally now.
4) and... was this the first time you used this ruleset? - No
5) How many players were in the game? - two
6) What went well? Had a great time playing.
7) What could have been improved? - My infantry were 6 base units going up against 8 base units. Which means in an even fight, my units would get to their break point first.  I need to consider fielding larger units.

A write up with pictures is now available on my blog:

1) What ruleset did you use in your last game?           Blitzkreig Commander
2) What armies were confronted?                             Soviet v Germans March 1945
3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset?             Yes
4) and... was this the first time you used this ruleset? No, my favourite ww2 rule set
5) How many players were in the game?                   5
6) What went well?                                                 Randomised Soviet arrival
7) What could have been improved?                         More aggressive tactics by the German players.

These last two weeks we have played a late war scenario based around the resupplying the town of Kustrin on the River Oder. On 27th March 1945 four armoured divisions from Busse's 9th Army made an all out counter attack against the Soviet 8th Guards Army to reach and resupply Festung Kustrin. Initially caught off balance the 8th Guards Army counter-attacked piecemeal. Some supplies did reach the town before the 8th Army repulsed the Germans back to their staring point. On the 29th the Soviets took Kustrin by storm. around 1000 soldiers eventually managed to reach German lines, including the garrison commander, who was promptly arrested on the orders of Hitler.

In our refight very few supplies managed to reach the garrison and the Soviets achieved a major victory

1) What ruleset do you use in your last game? – If The Lord Spares Us, by Too Fat Lardies
2) What armies were confronted? – Ottomans v British, 20 February 1918
3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset? - Very
4) and... was this the first time you used this ruleset? – Not by a long way
5) How many players were in the game? – 3 on the first evening, 4 on the second

The new:
6) What went well? – One of the British Battalions
7) What could have been improved? – British deployment and command and control

We belatedly marked the 100th anniversary of the battle of Jebel Ekteif over the last two Saturdays.

The Talat ed Dumm - Jebel Ekteif range runs across the Jerusalem to Jericho road. The 180th British Brigade attacked the Talat ed Dumm end of the range up the main road while 179th British Brigade attacked the Jebel Ekteif end via the Pilgrim road. Our game looked at 179th British Brigade.

The Brigade attacked the eastern end of the range, including Jebel Ekteif with two battalions up. Another battalion was in reserve while the fourth battalion supported the two batteries of artillery deployed to cover the remainder of the range. The Brigade MG company covered the left flank of the assault while the Wellington Mounted Rifles covered the right. Armoured and Light cars advanced along the Pilgrim road to cross the Wadi Mukelik and support the assault.

(https://farm1.staticflickr.com/814/40852583922_988fbb4712_o.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/25f1aVd)

As the two leading battalions approached the Ottoman trenches they received two very different receptions. The London Scottish on the left took fire from two Ottoman rifle companies, two MG companies and indirect fire from an Ottoman artillery battery. In contrast the Prince of Wales's Own Civil Service Rifles only took fire from two Ottoman rifle companies. Fire from the Civil Service Rifles and the supporting armoured cars reduced the effectiveness of the Ottoman fire.

(https://farm1.staticflickr.com/816/40852583592_b8685c41fb_o.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/25f1aPw)

It was about this point that the British realised they had two major problems.

In a desire to avoid potentially effective machine gun fire from the ridge the artillery and supporting infantry had been deployed too far back and were unable to spot any enemy in their trenches above them on the ridge. Similarly the MG company in the wadi was going to have to rely on spotting enemy troops firing to support the assault.

The Wellington Mounted Rifles were also deployed too far away from the ridge to spot the enemy and worse were out of contact with the Headquarters, 179th British Brigade.

One of the lead companies of the London Scottish was destroyed and casualties mounted in the other companies. In contrast the Civil Service Rifles had their paper work in order, this became a running joke, and managed to capture the eastern end of the Ottoman trench line expelling two companies of the weakest Ottoman battalion. They then repulsed a counter attack by two fresh Ottoman companies.

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4774/40852583462_2840142046_o.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/25f1aMh)

The British finally managed to partially sort their command and control issues and ordered the fourth battalion and one battery of artillery to advance to the wadi where the infantry was on the losing end of an exchange of fire with an entrenched Ottoman battalion. They did however pin this battalion in place. They also ordered the reserve battalion to advance and replace the London Scottish. Finally they ordered the Civil Service Rifles to advance along the range, hopefully taking the enemy in the flank.

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4774/40852583142_5281d7c983_o.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/25f1aFL)

One company of the Civil Service Rifles was blown off the top of the Jebel Ekteif by close range fire from an Ottoman artillery battery having previously driven the enemy infantry before them. Another company was steadily clearing the trench line supported by the Armoured and Lights cars. One over enthusiastic section of light cars was destroyed by fire from an Ottoman MG company.

The right most company of the Civil Service Rifles was poised to overrun the Ottoman artillery and avenge their colleagues.

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4786/27023906878_83611a40b4_o.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/Hb1A1W)

It was at this point that the Ottomans conceded, they were going to be unable to inflict enough casualties on the British to force a draw.

The battle had been won by the Prince of Wales's Own Civil Service Rifles but a heavy price had been paid by the London Scottish. They had attacked with nearly 650 men, 80 had withdrawn.

As a British player seeing that many trenches on the ridge was extremely daunting. I suspect that contributed to our timid deployment of the artillery and infantry on our left.

1) What ruleset do you use in your last game? - Imperial Skies
2) What armies fleet ship were confronted? - British vs French
3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset? - first time out, but yes.
4) and... was this the first time you used this ruleset? - yes, but it was great fun
5) How many players were in the game? - two
6) What went well? The rules. Pete brought a lovely terrain mat too.
7) What could have been improved? My French fleet all fell off their bases! Oh, and I lost, twice...

Game one was three-on-three and I lost three-nil!

Game two, a closer fight, this time I managed to take down a Destroyer and a battleship, plus a further British battleship and cruiser were limping home.

In some ways I think they look better without the bases :)

Wasn't this their first outing...  the newly painted curse strikes again ;)

A little out of my wheelhouse as well, but it looks very good, Mr. Lemmy. Do you have boarding actions in a game like this, sky commandos leaping out of a Handley Page, that sort of thing?

1) What ruleset do you use in your last game? - Wing scale Volley & Bayonet
2) What armies  were confronted? - British vs American
3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset? - Very
4) and... was this the first time you used this ruleset? - Not by a long long way
5) How many players were in the game? - Four
6) What went well? Everything, unless you were British ;)
7) What could have been improved? The British player's adjustment to the different troop types

The plan was to play a one evening game to christen the new AWI forces.

The scenario was loosely based on Benedict Arnold's raid on Richmond. Historically he only faced a couple of hundred militia and burnt the town. We replaced the militia with Lafayette's force of elite light infantry that Washington sent to Virginia to stop Arnold's raids.

We actually ended up playing two games in the one evening

In the first game the British players hadn't fully adjusted to the differences in troop quality between the forces in the Carolinas and Virginia. They advanced the 80th Foot rapidly towards the American left and centre. The Queen's Rangers advanced towards the American right. The remaining Loyalist and Hessian infantry moved up behind the 80th. The British artillery open fired on Richmond at long range while the Queen's Rangers Horse waited in reserve.

(https://farm1.staticflickr.com/815/26216020827_deec1b2905_o.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/FWBXD6)

The American response was swift and decisive, Barber's and Gimat's battalions charged the 80th Foot destroying a quarter of the battalion, routing half and throwing the remaining quarter back in disorder. This left a disordered company of Hessians, the Loyal American Regiment and Benedict Arnold's American Legion facing the victorious American battalions.

(https://farm1.staticflickr.com/818/26216020237_39790f1838_o.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/FWBXsV)

The British conceded the game at this point.

We reset and the British players decided they wanted to try again rather than swap sides.

Game two saw a more cautious advance by the British. This time the Hessians moved towards the wood on the flank of the 80th Foot and the Queen's Rangers Horse moved to 'threaten' the American left flank. The Artillery advanced with the infantry and divided its attention between the American infantry and Richmond. The Loyal American Regiment and Benedict Arnold's American Legion advanced in skirmish order to support the Queen's Rangers on the American right.

(https://farm1.staticflickr.com/798/40193367835_c55f60896a_o.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/24eKvWB)

The British artillery fire had set part of Richmond ablaze. This forced the American infantry to be aggressive. Barber's battalion on the American left suffered from the fire of the Hessians and the 80th, losing a third of their number. The 80th in turn lost a quarter of their number.

In the American centre Vose's battalion and the artillery pushed forward to counter the British artillery. On the American right Gimat's battalion attacked the Queen's Rangers and destroyed half of them.

(https://farm1.staticflickr.com/878/26216019757_0957d5d6ff_o.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/FWBXjD)

Gimat's battalion was flanked by the Loyal American Regiment and Benedict Arnold's American Legion and casualties rapidly mounted.

(https://farm1.staticflickr.com/795/26216019507_b19e3c1799_o.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/FWBXfk)

The American left was again decisive with Barber and Vose's battalions charging and devastating 80th Foot and destroying the Hessians. This combined with more casualties inflicted by Gimat's battalion caused the morale of both British brigades to collapse.

(https://farm1.staticflickr.com/898/40193366245_ff702dcde2_o.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/24eKvtc)

It was a much closer win for the Americans with their morale only one causality off either exhaustion or collapse and a third of Richmond in flames.

Another couple of very enjoyable AWI games (OK I was American for both games).

The second game would have seen Benedict Arnold captured by men of Gimat's battalion as the British brigade facing them had collapsed for morale purposes having taken too many hits. In the picture above Benedict Arnold's command stand is the one with 3 mounted redcoated officers about 3" in front of Gimat's unengaged stand. It is now the American turn and fast infantry can move 16"......The umpire outlined to the American players that historically if Arnold was taken justice was to be served swiftly and Lafayette was not expected to return to Washington with him first......

1) What ruleset do you use in your last game? - Mortiem et Gloriam
2) What armies were confronted? - Mid Republican Roman vs Pyrrhus
3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset? - yes
4) and... was this the first time you used this ruleset? -no
5) How many players were in the game? - two
6) What went well? Legions took out Pyrrhus's lancers, Triarii took out his elephants and a pike block, another legion took on and beat hopilites, ran over two units of skirmishers too.
7) What could have been improved? Legions performance vs Pike blocks, auxiliaries vs Epirotes didn't go well, and another auxilia got shot to pieces. Triarii broke after killing two units, which ended the game for Rome.

15-10 to Pyrrhus, so, couldn't be a closer Pyrrhic victory if we tried!

1) What ruleset do you use in your last game? - Home brew amalgam of Operation Warboard and Quarrie, et al
2) What armies were confronted? - Germans v Russians 1944
3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset? - yes
4) and... was this the first time you used this ruleset? - not by a looong way
5) How many players were in the game? - four
6) What went well? The Luftwaffe intercepting all the attacking Russian aircraft #:-S
7) What could have been improved? The Russian airstrike #-o

The Russians were attempting to break through the Germans encircling Leningrad. The initial Russian bombardment took out half the German artillery. But the Germans managed to get their Tigers and Panthers into good blocking positions and the Russian T34/85, KV-1 & T34/76s struggled to make enough head way.

If the Russian airstrike had arrived and thinned out the German artillery even further then things might have been easier for the Russians.

This March we have been playing a campaign set in the Baltic/East Prussia.

The Germans are backs against the wall trying to hold a disintegrating front, movement hampered by refugees and retreating units, units short of fuel and ammunition.
The Soviets have the men, the equipment and the strength to crush the Germans but the size of their forces makes them unwieldy.

The first game saw a German Infantry Brigade over-run by a large Soviet Infantry Army.

In the second game an over confident Soviet Tank Army commander take on a German Infantry group supported by heavy weapons. The tanks tried to roll over Panzer Grenadiers occupying a wooded hillside and came a cropper as the panzer fausts and shreks reaked mayhem on the unsupported tank battalions. The Soviet player pulled off to await the infantry.

The third game saw the 2nd Soviet Shock Army take on the 65th Infantry. The Soviets were surprised by a STuG battalion hidden in the right hand woods. Two T34s were KOed. The Soviets managed to suppress the STuGs  and then, in their following move destroyed them.

On the left the Germans used their Jagdpanther and other heavy assets to stall the Soviet advance but accurate shooting sees two assets destroyed.

The Germans realising the game is up have a good run of dice and quit the board. As this was a hasty attack by the Soviets they could not pursue the Germans. The Germans however have had their force split.

The campaign continues after Easter. For those who haven't campaigned before I can heartily recommend it as it  forces players to really think about how they use their forces.

1) What ruleset do you use in your last game? - Sword and Spear, 2 v 2 with large armies
2) What armies were confronted? - Wars of the Roses. Who was what was never worried about
3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset? - Mostly.  Most of the basics stuck.  Rules queries were quickly sorted by those who owned the book.
4) and... was this the first time you used this ruleset? - Played a game last Monday to learn the rules with Sunjester in preparation for today's all day game
5) How many players were in the game? - 4 (as fitting for a 2 v 2)

The new:
6) What went well? My bottle of beer, getting the understanding about what is best for a unit in activating it isn't necessarily best for the overall local situation.
7) What could have been improved?  I think we forgot a rule about testing for units near a defeated unit a few times.  My dice rolling as per usual, however my dismounted men at arms did well.  If it was me I would have written an Orbat specific roster to help me find what I wanted, but that's just me.

3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset? - Very
4) and... was this the first time you used this ruleset? - No
5) How many players were in the game? - Solo
6) What went well? - The rules came back to me, which was great as it's sometime since I last played these.
7) What could have been improved? - The Blunders, as the Parliamentarians had two, both of which saw them lose two four point units, the last when they had manged to get into a good position!

Some more games to come so that I'm fully au fait with the rules before our Salute demo game

3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset? - completely
4) and... was this the first time you used this ruleset? - nope
5) How many players were in the game? - two
6) What went well? Despite being out numbered, out classes and out played, I won! Useless bows, holding full fat knights for three turns in combat before they could be rescued. Shooting a key unit. Catching other units from behind. Realising how to use my armies manoeuvrability. Having Shaun the Sheep as a legendary cinc!
7) What could have been improved? Losing a unit due to being stupidly badly positioned. Parking the flank of one of my most expensive units too near a village, and being hit by raving loonies!

2) What armies were confronted? - taurians vs Hill Dwarves vs High Elves in Fight For The River Ford
3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset? - absolutely
4) and... was this the first time you used this ruleset? - this year, shamefully, yes, but otherwise, no.
5) How many players were in the game? - three
6) What went well? Minotaur charging elves in the back while dwarf general hit them from the front. Rallying broken Minotaur, randomly placing ALL the terrain in sector 1, three small hills a large hill and an impassable, then the Dwarves ending up in that sector (at random), and only one of their units had 'hillwalkers'!  =O we all rolled1 for deployment,  (but chose to split to other sectors), 8 1s on the trot!!!
7) What could have been improved? Ditching the Minotaur mage, as he did nothing all game d6-1, not so helpful. John had his usual run of bad dice, but was far more mobile than when he used Elves!
Full blog write up later, but needless to say, huge amounts of hilarity ensued!

2) NW Frontier patrol v. the local upstart

3) Absolute doddle to pick up

4) First time I had ever played it

5) Two players

6) As the upstart my chaps (irregular infantry) did well to grab the high ground, whilst the utterly hopeless, but fine moustachioed, British gunnery officer didn't seem to realise that this might be a problem.

7) Unfortunately the British infantry officer was a much more clued in chap and gave my irregulars a jolly good thrashing with concentrated volleys.
Finally word got through to the slumbering artillery, who let rip fine style into my charging horde of tribesmen, and also saw off the sneaky flank attack with my irregular cavalry.

1) What ruleset do you use in your last game? - What a Tanker!
2) What armies were confronted? - German vs Brits
3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset? - Couple of errors, but not bad
4) and... was this the first time you used this ruleset? - Yes
5) How many players were in the game? - 2

TooFatLardie's latest rules are simple, fast play tank skirmish rules - you can play an entire game with just a couple of minis a side! It's a very rules-light action oriented set of rules, I can best liken it to the online game 'World of Tanks', but with minis.

I ordered the rules from the website Wednesday, they were dispatched Thursday, I got them Friday and played my first game Saturday. Not bad service  :D I got most of my familiarisation with the rules from the various YouTube video playthroughs, which may explain the errors...

I threw together a N African themed table (I had the buildings & the palm trees handy), and 2 PzIII (a 3.7cm & a 5cm), a PzJg 1 and a StuG IIIB faced off against a Churchill I, Valentine II, Crusader II and an A13. We played in 10mm scale, naturally, so converted all inches to 2cm.

The Churchill & Val, both Slow & Heavy Armour, advanced all of about 20cm (over many game turns) before they fell ( the Val in flames, the Churchill abandoned) after repeated shots from both Pz III and the StuG. The A13 kept the PzJg I busy over the other side of the table until the Crusader, desperately getting out of the way of the Pz IIIs, chased the PzJg off, making good use of it's Fast trait. With 50% of the force down (and the time getting late), the Brits conceded the field...

I did get the rules on spotting & damage slightly wrong (but equally for both sides) in manners which stretched the game out but didn't really change it, but it was a damn fun game!

1. Longstreet

2. I863 in the Eastern Theatre

3. I felt very comfortable with the rules, even though I hadn't used them in about three or four years. Very quickly back into the swing of things after the first couple of turns.

4.

5. This was a two player game.

6. What went well? This was a try out prior to doing the full campaign, probably in the Western Theatre. The game itself played very well and looked like the small battle it was, with a larger Confederate force gradually pushing back a defending Union force. The game went through two complete reshuffles of the card decks and took about  3 1/2 hours all told.

7. What could have gone better. Despite being a 15mm game it probably would have played better on a 5x3 rather than a 6x4. Almost the entire left quarter of the field was not used, as well as the further 9 inches of the right flank. The first three turns involved the Confederates simply making their way across the table to get into range. Their gun battery featured a 12pdr howitzer, which never fired as it never got into range (its accompanying Napoleons did sterling work). The game lasted a long time but the Union could have done with at least one more unit of veterans to put up a stauncher fight when the Confederates charged. The scenario was number 5 in the rulebook, with a seasoned veteran Confederate force of 6 to 8 stand units (some of the 8s being recruits) attacking a smaller force of Union 8 stand recruits with a single unit of 6 stand veterans and a 10 stand force of eager recruits entering the fray on turn 7. Finally I had a Confederate infantry regiment in canister range of my three light rifles. "Just so long as I don't roll threes." I then rolled three 3s - oh how we laughed  :'( . Needless to say, the photogenic Union generals (the objective) were captured by the Rebs. Serves them right for being such posers.

This is one of the things I really appreciate about Too fat Lardies games (there are probably many others I don't know of) where they implement ways to get troops into contact range without having to move them across the table over multiple turns - Sharpe Practice Blinds make the job easier just moving a single blind for the unit, while Chain Of Command has jump-off points deployed in an initial scouting sequence.

The problem was easily avoidable with a smaller table. There still needs to be enough depth to give artillery an opportunity to slow down an attack or soften up the defence. The smaller table would have given the confederates time to dress their ranks and get off a couple of rounds of artillery fire before closing in the third turn, either with a charge, or more likely some preliminary musketry. I am hoping to try out the Real Time Wargames' Wars of the Roses rules soon, which set up the armies within charge reach.

1) What ruleset do you use in your last game? - Sabresquadron
2) What armies were confronted? - Argentines vs British in glorious 10mm.
3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset? - I was playing the author, found a couple of things he missed (amphibious vehicle going up an estuary)
4) and... was this the first time you used this ruleset? - sixth game
5) How many players were in the game? - two (our Finnish contingent couldn't make it  :( )
6) What went well? Perfeckly timed artillery strike by Argentine 105mm battery catching the Welsh Guard platoon on the hop. argentine morale was amazing. Assault onto British positions by 3 platoon carried the day.
7) What could have been improved? Argentine special forces not being bullet magnets for the Royal Marines. 2nd platoon of Grunts not stalling just before assaulting . Harriers not being quite so accurate, or turning up time after time!

1) What ruleset do you use in your last game? - For King and Parliament
2) What armies were confronted? - Scots Royalists vs Covenanters
3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset? - Yes
4) and... was this the first time you used this ruleset? - No, third game
5) How many players were in the game? - 5
6) What went well? By the end of the game our three "first time" players had picked up the game mechanics pretty well and were able to swiftly work out their unit odds and which units of their brigade needed to move when.
7) What could have been improved? The Covenant could have done with a few more successful "to hit" chits when it really mattered and learn to skirmish with their cavalry rather than just charge home ;)

Paul and I ran this game to introduce the other members of our regular gaming group to FK&P. I think we were pretty successful with that aim, plenty of period joviality between the two sides (along with appropriate bagpipe background music thanks to Roy's vinyl collection  :) ) . This was a very close game as the Covenant decided to meet the Royalists head on. Despite Montrose's command waffling around on the right for most of the game and the eventual destruction of Kilpont's highland brigade it was the veteran Irish who carried the day for the Royalists. Maybe they were motivated by revenge following the death of McColla from a lucky shot from the Perth Militia forlorn hope, but eventually using their salvo firing tactics they rolled enough units of Tulliebardine's command to convince the Covenanters to withdraw form the field. The result of game came down to one combat where either side could have taken the 3 medals needed to win, the Royalists ended up winning 14 to 12.

So a good result despite the close loss - personally I felt really happy with the rules and our decision to proceed with our order from Pendraken.

1. Walter Schnaffs - Square Bashing the FPW

2. Imperial French v. Prussian

3. Very comfortable with these rules after a number of games

5. Two players plus an interested observer

6. The new players picked up the rules very quickly. The Prussians did particularly well in the pre game, winning the attack points and losing only one unit to the reserves. The new players enjoyed the game so much they decided to buy armies and the rules.

7. The French performed poorly in the pre-game, and although only two infantry bases were lost entirely, two thirds of the French army was put into reserve, including all the artillery. Despite this, the victory calculation at the end of the game gave the Prussians only a minor victory, mainly because about half the French reserves never appeared, so couldn't take any casualties; only one French unit was routed, and the French managed to hold the crossroads.

A good summary of our FK&P game from Pierre the Shy above

I would say in Motrose's defence that his pike-less Highlanders had seen off the Covenanters' horse and he did spend part of the battle stunned by a stray musket ball.
Having half his command one hit away from destruction and repeatedly failing to rally also induced some degree of caution
No prizes for guessing which commander I was ;)

I have four observations on the game:

My thanks to d_Guy for a really intriguing scenario that has played very differently each time

My thanks also to Mollinary and Simon for a great set of rules that are:

1) What ruleset do you use in your last game? - What a Tanker!
2) What armies were confronted? - 10mm German vs. British, 1940-ish North Afrika.
3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset? - Yes, happy with them now
4) and... was this the first time you used this ruleset? - no, played half a dozen games now
5) How many players were in the game? - two each in two games
6) What went well? - introduced a new player never played a proper miniature wargame before, and he really liked it. Also, the general 'boy's own adventure comics' feel of the game worked excellently.
7) What could have been improved? I need to create some better portable terrain to take to the boardgame club, and a better variety of tanks for this game. Most of mine are very early war...

This game has definitely caught my imagination, I'll be working on terrain & tanks for it, Russian front next. We've proved that one player can easily control 3-4 tanks, and that a 3' square play area is sufficient in 10mm (converting 1"=2cm). The roleplaying element of working out WHY the gunner can't acquire a target that's only 10 yards in front of the tank is half the fun (as opposed to just saying "I didn't roll any 2's."..)

Ball and Bayonette yesterday, SYW Prussians and Austrians, two players; familiar rules. I had some trouble with combat rolls when things favoured me quite attractively on paper. but my opponent (who's good at earlier eras) is struggling to learn how to coordinate the three big arms, that hussars seldom brush cuirassiers aside, and that columns suffer under gunfire. Prussian victory was clear before half-time.

I was just working through the example scenario in FK&P, it has the following units per side

3-4 Generals
5-6 units of cavalry
2-3 Forlorn Hope
3-5 Foot Battallia

Size of the units is up to you. For 10mm I'm thinking 120mm frontage, so using 3no 40x40mm bases for foot, and just 2no 40x40mm bases for the Swedish Cavalry (basically 1no 40x40mm base representing 1 hit in FK&P

I'm trying to get some troops together for a test battle - and I thought I would be short of pike and shot, but I think it will be cavalry that is the problem!

1. Walter Schnaffs

2. Prussian v. French Imperial

3. Very comfortable

4. Umpteenth time

5. 2 players

6. This was a trial for the short game being put on at Phalanx, which went well, although again the French lost a substantial number of troops, including all artillery (again!) to the reserves. The game flowed smoothly and quickly - all over in less than 2hours, so should be able to get a couple of participation games going.

7. the Prussian player could have attained a crushing defeat if he had pushed for the enemy baseline. As a consequence a Prussian minor victory.

1) What ruleset do you use in your last game? - Twilight of the Sun King (2nd edition)
2) What armies were confronted? - refight of the battle of Klissow 1702 - Swedes vs Saxons and Poles
3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset? - Yes
4) and... was this the first time you used this ruleset? - No
5) How many players were in the game? - 2
6) What went well? - One player was new to the system but an expereinced gamer who quickly picked it up and everything went well.
7) What could have been improved? Need serious work on terrain - this is my main aim for 2018.

The battle features a heavily outnumbered Swedish army taking on a good Saxon army with a Polish contingent that is not eager to fight. The Poles are 'Wavering' in the rules and so very fragile. The Swedes have to spread themselves thinly to cover the frontage but are confident. So the are 'Small' and 'Determined' under the rules - this means they have high morale but are vulnerable.

The Swedes moved forward from their starting position to attempt to block their enemies in place with the terrain. In response Poles, on the Swedish left and with a relatively free approach, moved into the attack. The Saxons occupied the rest of the table but had difficult terrain to cross. So they pushed forward but it would take time, the Allied player correctly identified the Swedish Right as the most vulnerable section so pushed there.

The opening stages saw the Poles on the left collapsing fairly quickly as on the right the Saxons struggled to establish themselves & defeat the outclassed Swedish right. This they managed after some swings either way and not long after the Poles withdrew from the battle. By this time the Swedes had engaged the Saxon cavalry on their left, while both sides centre eyed each other with neither side wanting to risk an attack. It became a race for the Swedes to defeat the Saxon left or the victorious Saxon right to slam into the centre. It was a very close run thing but with both sides needing to rout 1 more opposing unit the Swedes launched a final all out attack. The Saxons were dispersed by their movements and so the Swedes were able to hit them in a more or less compact group & secure victory.

It was an excellent, tense game.

3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset? - absolutely
4) and... was this the first time you used this ruleset? - third, third and first
5) How many players were in the game? - three

Rome and Carthage broke on the same turn, leaving the Straights Of Messina clear for the Syracusian fleet to enjoy. The Carthaginians, despite losing 50% of their fleet for no real return, sank the Roman flagship, drown their admiral and desposing of all Roman ships sent to rescue him, meaning both fleets were vunerable to fleeing. The Syracuse fleet stayed safe, away from trouble, only to win by taking both other fleets to over 59% losses.

7) What could have been improved? The whole Carthaginian playbook!

Last night:

1. Walter Schnaffs

2. French Imperial v. Prussian

3. Very comfortable - many games now played

5. Three - 2 French (including one novice) v. 1 Prussian

6. The game flowed very smoothly, including pre-game and terrain set up - a total of three hours.

7. Surprisingly the Prussians found themselves in defence, with the French delivering the double whammy of charging and ranged fire. The Prussians lost some artillery early on, whilst some was put into reserve and saw little duty. It was a decisive victory for the French, but the Prussians did manage a von Bredow cavalry charge, sweeping away some Turcos.

And today:

1. The Men Who Would Be Kings

2. Upstart Maharaja v. Her Majesty's brave British lads

3. Comfortable with these

4. Second game

5. Two players

6. As the maharaja's forces I did remarkably well, sweeping all before me with my cavalry and tribal levies.

7. The maharaja's sepoys were less spectacular, becoming pinned and gradually falling back as they failed to rally. The British had an assortment of not quite top drawer officers - one abandoned his men as they were overwhelmed by tribesmen; one refused to put his artillery in harms way, constantly falling back after only two rounds at the enemy; the third had read too many Boys' Own adventures, leading his men forward towards advancing cavalry rather than delivering well placed volleys. The entire unit was ridden down for its trouble.

1) What ruleset do you use in your last game? - What a Tanker!
2) What armies were confronted? - 20mm German vs. French, 1940 Pz2 and Pz38t v 2 Renault R35.
3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset? - Yes, prepared by watching youtube videos and reading up online.
4) and... was this the first time you used this ruleset? - Yes.
5) How many players were in the game? - two with two watching.

6) What went well? - Command dice mechanic seemed to work well and after you've taken damage it's difficult to do what you want.
7) What could have been improved? Not a lot at this stage as it was the first time for both of us. Tokens are a bit small and light, they are easily knocked off the dashboard.

Panzer 2's are no match for R35's may have been better with 2 Pz38t's but forces were evenly matched points wise. We enjoyed the game and will have another game this Friday.

Hep! Devs Vvlt!; Comnenan Byzantines vs Franks; two players, familiar rules, largely satisfactory, but the manouevre is a bit clumsy by comparison with some of the derivatives. Can't complain about the result, however; I had some absurdly lucky rolls (or the enemy had some desperately poor ones) which allowed me to withstand that deadly crusader first impact.

1. Tin Soldiers in Action

2. SYW Austrian v Prussian

3. Reasonably comfortable at the moment - more play needed to get used to the system

4. This was my fourth game

5. Two players

6. The game played well and the Austrians were beaten, but only after stiff resistance

7. We needed to get the tenacity rule sorted, ie who takes it and at what point in the turn.

1) What ruleset do you use in your last game? - Black Powder
2) What armies were confronted? -                   Russians pursuing French and Confederation Allies
3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset? -    Yes, have used them 8 - 10 times previously
4) and... was this the first time you used this ruleset? - No (See above)
5) How many players were in the game? -          Two

The new:
6) What went well? -     The "Warmaster style" command provided an unpredictable pursuit, the French retreating by bounds while leaving delaying forces; the Russians struggling to drive their superior numbers into combat range.
7) What could have been improved? - As ever we probably missed a couple of key points in the rules, but all things considered it was a fascinating game with plenty of decisions for either commander.

1) What ruleset do you use in your last game?      -     Ganesha Games' Sellswords and Spellslingers
2) What armies were confronted?       -       Human (four characters) played by me v Orcs and Trolls played by the rules
3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset?      -       Yes, though I probably missed a rule or two and tweaked the deployment method a little.
4) and... was this the first time you used this ruleset?       -       Yes
5) How many players were in the game?      -     Just me. They are for solo or co-operative games.
6) What went well?       -     The gradual build up of tension as more foes appeared.
7) What could have been improved?      -       my dice rolling could have been better!  :'( Great fun.

Hi

1) What ruleset do you use in your last game? To the Strongest!
2) What armies were confronted?   Late Republican Romans v Gauls
3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset?    Yes - very
4) and... was this the first time you used this ruleset?  No
5) How many players were in the game?  4
6) What went well?     The smooth flow of the rules without too many things needing to be looked up. Particularly like the way Roman generals do not have to be attached to particular units and can therefore move around but the Gallic generals had to be attached.
7) What could have been improved?  Not sure, maybe allowing Light cavalry to evade easier than other heavier cavalry?

Cheers Paul

1) What ruleset do you use in your last game? Fire & Fury (original brigade version)
2) What armies were confronted?   Billy Yanks v Johnny Rebs (Eastern theatre)
3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset?    Yes - very
4) and... was this the first time you used this ruleset?  No
5) How many players were in the game?  4
6) What went well?   Familiarity with the rules with 3 people I had not played the rules with before.
7) What could have been improved? Bigger table, we were playing on a 6' x 4' table and with 12" infantry moves we could have done with something larger. Still, excellent game with good company and probably my favourite rule set of any period.

2. Prussian/Bavarian v Imperial French

3. Extremely comfortable with these rules as I have played them many times over the past couple of years. I have even bought armies (Pacific War 10mm/Mid-C19th 2mm) specifically for this ruleset.

5. 2 players

6. Familiarity with the rules led to a very smooth flowing game. The scenario construction meant a clear outcome.

7. I lost again. [see Batreps]

I always thought the custards were supposed to be somewhat 'cowardy'? Or is that merely a reference to their natural theatricality?

1) What ruleset do you use in your last game?      -    Twilight of the Sun King 2nd edition
2) What armies were confronted?       -       Refight of Blenheim, 1704 - Confederates/Imperialists vs French/Bavarian
3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset?      -       Yes
4) and... was this the first time you used this ruleset?       -       No
5) How many players were in the game?      -    4, 2 novices and 2 experienced.
6) What went well?       -     It was a good game and great fun. The 2 novices were a 15 year old who plays Fantasy and his dad who was in his 1st game. They both enjoyed it and hopefully will play again.
7) What could have been improved?      -       not to be such a hot day.

We played Blenheim, 1704 yesterday. Two players a side, one novice and one experienced player a side. We were using some makeshift terrain. As we didn't have all the correct figures some units stood in for the real ones.

It was a interesting game. The Confederates (the 'British') choose to avoid attacking Blenheim and Oberglauheim, the 2 fortified villages, and instead pile everything through the gap between the villages. Meanwhile the Bavarian Elector on the Franco Bavarian right had decided that he was going to counter attack Eugene's Imperialist facing him. The odds on this flank are fairly even and the Elector was an experienced player facing a novice 15 year old Eugene.

This meant that the French in the gap, commanded by an novice, between the villages were quickly in a lot of trouble. They launched some spoiling attacks but couldn't stop the Confederates establishing themselves across the stream, despite the Confederates often struggling to actually get across.

Meanwhile the Elector's and Eugene's troops both advanced toward each and met in the open. The young novice player playing Eugene then took a big risk. He sent part of his infantry (the Danes) to screen the enemy infantry. The remaining infantry (the Prussians) intervened into the massive cavalry fight that was developing between the opposing forces. This drew in the French cavalry reserve in the centre but the presence of the Prussian infantry was proving decisive in the cavalry action & the young Eugene was slowly getting the upperhand.

It was probably at this point that both Franco Bavarian commanders made the 'mistake' that would cost them the game. Both left most of the forces in the two fortified villages in those villages, rather than move some out to intervene in the ongoing combats. This in particular doomed the French in the gap between the villages.

The French did eventually realise they needed to move out of the two villages and indeed did some serious damage when they did so. But it was to late to save the game. The Imperialist broke through their opponents and combined with the loses on the other flank it was enough to break the Franco Bavarians.

I managed to take a few photos, but I don't seem to be able to upload them :(

NIce - as a defender fortified positions are often a trap you end up trying to hold onto too dearly; a canny attacker can either screen them and hit you elsewhere or force you to devote too much to actively hold them - good move on risking the Danes alone screening off the infantry and concentrating force (and combined arms!) against the French on the left.
Title: Re: What was the last ruleset you played 2018?
Post by: Hwiccee on 02 July 2018, 11:12:39 PM
Toxicpixie: Yes this was certainly the case. The French very much got fixated on the villages.

The Danes and that flank were commanded by a 15 year old playing his first historical game and he was excellent. He got the idea straight away and beat an experienced (pushing 40 years gaming) player hands down.

You will also be happy to know the French managed to 'kill' no less than 2 of their commanders when re-rolling for an unimportant failed morale check and getting even worse - when has that ever happened before :)

1. FoG

2. Roman Slave army v. Roman Late Republican

3. Reasonably comfortable - still find some of the manoeuvres a bit too weird, eg. Troops from one end of the line leapfrogging over the entire unit to end up at the other end of the line. I know we have to make compromises in games but that one just seems too unbelievable.

4. Played loads and still not comfortable with them, but it's what my fellow club members play.

5. Three players - one Roman and two Serviles .

6. Well, at least my boys killed Crassus.

7. Then the Romans killed both me and Crixus. Spartacus was elsewhere on the day.

1) What ruleset do you use in your last game?      -    Twilight of the Sun King 2nd edition
2) What armies were confronted?       -       GNW Swedes vs Russian, a what if battle in 1708
3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset?      -       Yes
4) and... was this the first time you used this ruleset?       -       No
5) How many players were in the game?      -    2
6) What went well?       -     Everything
7) What could have been improved?      -       Again another hot day we could have done without. We need to boost the Russian defences next time - outnumbering the Swedes more than 2 to 1 and defending a river is not enough.

The game is a 'what if' set in 1708. It is based on a real position the Russians took up to block the road to Moscow in what would have been the campaign deciding battle in 1708. But the Swedes had already decided to move South and so never attacked. It does though give a chance to use the Swedish army at its peak strength, something it never got to do in reality. The Swedish launched an attack all across the line. On their left the cavalry there ran into trouble and two attempts to get over the river were repulsed and they then switched to defence. In the centre the infantry got across the river but then got bogged down in the Russian horde. It was becoming an attrition battle, not good for the very outnumbered Swedes. But help was on hand as the Swedish right completely trashed their opponents and then started to roll up the line. Soon they were smashing into the flank of the Russian infantry centre - the end was swift.

The game went very well, especially as it was played in the afternoon at a busy show by 2 players. We will run it again but next time beef up the Russian defences. In any case you can see some shots here.  https://rollaone.com/2018/07/16/the-what-if-battle-horka-1708-at-joy-of-six-2018/ (https://rollaone.com/2018/07/16/the-what-if-battle-horka-1708-at-joy-of-six-2018/)

Hi

1) What ruleset do you use in your last game?      -    Fire and Fury Brigade 2nd Edition
2) What armies were confronted?       -       Union v Rebels
3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset?      -       Yes
4) and... was this the first time you used this ruleset?       -     First time with 2nd Edition
5) How many players were in the game?      -    4
6) What went well?       -     The new bits worked well e.g. different kinds of artillery
7) What could have been improved?      -   The jury is still out as to whether the new bits in the rules are actually worth it at the level the game is played at.

Cheers Paul

1) What ruleset do you use in your last game?      -   Bloody Big BATTLES! (BBB)

2) What armies were confronted?       -       Hungarians vs Austro-Russians, Hungarian War of Independence, 1848-1849. We were fighting the battle of Pered, which is a kind of Hungarian Waterloo, a dozen eerie similarities:
http://bloodybigbattles.blogspot.com/2018/07/guess-which-battle-this-is.html

3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset?      -       Yes

4) and... was this the first time you used this ruleset?       -     First time in over a month ...

5) How many players were in the game?      -    4

6) What went well?       -     Truly exciting game, everything going against the Hungarians at the start, but we pulled it back and salvaged a draw on the last move, almost snatching a win. The scenario has a sort of self-equilibriating mechanism: both sides have the option, if things are going badly for them partway through, of upping the ante and trying to commit reserves from elsewhere, with the risk that larger enemy forces they are pinning offtable will arrive earlier, or that they themselves won't turn up where they're needed. That was what saved us on the Hungarian side, we gambled and it paid off. And the best thing was catching up with the rest of the gang, as I hadn't seen them for over a month because of various travels.

7) What could have been improved? - None of the guys could stay for our usual post-battle pint!  :o

1. Tin Soldiers in Action

2. SYW Prussians v Austrians

3. Very comfortable, despite my later comments

4. Played this set a number of times now

5. 2 players and we played the scenario (same one in my batrep but a different opponent) three times over four hours

6. I learnt a lot about the nuances in the rules that I hadn't cottoned on to before, namely as the rather poor translation gave the impression actions had to be done in a certain order, which they don't.

7. Well, you never know. Now I am more aware of how this game should be played I may do better. I have now lost this scenario 6 times.

2) What armies were confronted? - Soviets Tanks vs Canadians
3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset? - utterly (but I was playing the author)
4) and... was this the first time you used this ruleset? - nope, but the first time for the Canadians on table
5) How many players were in the game? - two
6) What went well? BMPs with Spandles caused nearly all my casualties.
7) What could have been improved? My T62s died, all of them.

Full report on the blog tomorrow, but for a long time it looked like it was going to be an utterly one sided affair for the poor Soviets!

I still lost, but we did inflict some losses in the end.

1) What ruleset do you use in your last game? - Dragon Rampant (after having played a lot of Sellswords and Spellslingers recently)
2) What armies were confronted? - My approximation of First Age (Tolkien) Orcs and friends Trolls and wargs) vs "Elves" (used Saxons as stand-ins)
3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset? - Mostly - I have used these quite a lot in the past
4) and... was this the first time you used this ruleset? - see above
5) How many players were in the game? - One

The new:
6) What went well? The activation system makes the game quite unpredictable - this is good in some ways, particularly for solo play - but there seems little ability to formulate much of a strategy and most play is just very reactive.
7) What could have been improved? Remembering all the rules :)

1) What ruleset do you use in your last game? - Bloody Big Battles by Chris P, Vincent Tsao's 1st Bull Run scenario
2) What armies were confronted? - Union amateurs versus Confederate blunderers
3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset? - Yes, but as I get little time to play I really need to read and reread before playing, and get more practise in :D
4) and... was this the first time you used this ruleset? - Not at all. I did forget the play sheets I laminated so it was awkward but even the newer players (who've at least a scenario or two under their belts) were ok in a turn or two
5) How many players were in the game? - Four
6) What went well? Evans holding Matthews Hill, JEB Stuarts initial cavalry charge along the road from Newmarket into the undefended open flanks of two Union brigades, Jacksons recovery of the middle objective on Henry House Hill. The pre-printed battle map on PVC banner paper.
7) What could have been improved? Our dice. Oh my god, our dice. I don't think we got a single base loss from our fire, our mitivations were generally awful, and I routed two of our own Brigades off the table due to abysmal recover rolls. Mind, the Union weren't a lot better. Oh, our charge into Sherman's brigade where we caught them in March Column should have gone much better, too!

Superb scenario. Everyone is terrible. Command is abysmal. Almost everyone is Raw and Fragile, and armed with smooth bores so it becomes a close range flailing mess of idiocy, usually decided less by ones opponent than by sudden collapse in your own brigade cohesion after minimal casualties. Immensely fun, and a really well built scenario. We had to call it at the end of Turn 6 due to time with most objectives in dirty rebel hands, but only because the Union hadn't occupied them yet, as barring Jackson on Henry House Hill and some unsupported artillery which was skeddadling we'd got nothing anywhere to hold them with! Our final reinforcements had come on and blundered, and we'd have been lucky even with three more turns to get the useless slave owning aristo's and their befuddled cronies and lackeys anywhere useful.

End result was about 2500 casualties on the Union side with 500-100 run off, and double that on the Confederate side! It's safe to say that Vincents line on "the Confederates collapsed in victory as thoroughly as the Union collapsed in defeat" was entirely interchangeable :D

It certainly is. Fortunately it's easy enough to lurch up to contact, usually, as being Raw & Fragile & competent officer-less isn't too bad whilst in good order, but by Ghu as soon as the shooting starts it goes south very quickly! You'd have thought our having the finale, fresh, uncommitted reserves would have swung it but they just lurched on and stopped. I think my partners inability to roll above five on 2d6 for shooting had spread to all our dice for everything by then...

I quite like the various "Hail Black Shotte" sets, they give a playable game. You just need a bit judicious period tweaking and careful selection of special characteristics, and be happy with the basic command mechanism. Which if any bit gripes with you is a lot of work to get over, and I must admit we've moved back onto more period specific sets that require less rules faff!

1. FoGR

2. C16th Japanese v Koreans

3. Yes, having previously played FoG

4. This was my first game of FoGR

5. Three players: 2 Korean v 1 Japanese

6. Initially the Koreans did reasonably well actually routing a unit of mounted Samurai, but eventually quality began to tell, especially when a number  of Korean units had to reroll  their sixes as they were rated poor. Nevertheless the Koreans put on a brave show, and my cavalry flanking manoeuvre actually worked.

7. The massive weakness of these rules for me is the lack of a decent QRS, mainly because there are just too many variables linked to different troop types, weapons, animals etc. Although a double-sided QRS is available on the web, the font is so tiny that it is quite difficult to use. I also find the advantage/disadvantage concept to be an unnecessary faff where most other rules convey this with a plus or minus number.

Perhaps one way around the QRS problem might have been to have a simplified version in each of the period/theatre books, but I suppose this is the problem of generic rules covering vast periods and types of armies and a set which has clearly been produced for competition gaming. In my group we never pit ahistorical opponents against one another.

I had the chance to play Sharp Practice (28mm), which was so fun that I immediately bought the WW1 equivalent (Through the Mud and Blood) for my 10mm armies. Spent an afternoon coming up with funny names for the 'big men' on each side. I'll have to buy some new WW1 German and British officers to single base and use as the big men, as currently my British were being led by singl-based modern SAS soldiers and the Germans by Afghan insurgents.

1. FoGR

2. Italian Wars French v. Spanish

3. Yes

4. This was my third FoGR game

5. Two players

6. Of the three Spanish colunellas only one actually needed to go in to see off some skirmishers. The Spanish mounted arquebusiers stood against a charge by French light horse, seeing them off and killing the general who was leading them. They then made their way to the rear of the Swiss pike block to keep it guessing. Meanwhile the French gendarmes charged the Spanish men at arms and a large block of Spanish arquebusiers. Surprisingly the Spanish knights defeated the gendarmes who confronted them over a two turn melee. The other unit of gendarmes failed to contact the arquebusiers and took 25% casualties. In the next turn they smashed into the arquebusiers, driving them off, but were now at the hands of the victorious Spanish knights on one flank and the landsknechts on their other flank. With only the Swiss pike block left as a viable strike force the French conceded and the Swiss marched off the field. My first win in weeks.

7. I overcame the poor QRS by preparing some index cards, one for each unit type with the relevant information for each type on the card. This speeded up the game and made learning easier, allowing me to concentrate on the tactics. I find with some games, especially the FoG stable, that I end up playing against the rules rather than my opponent. I am only really interested in two periods in FoGR, the Italian Wars and the earlier 80 Years War, so will look to produce two play sheets just for those periods.

Quote1) What ruleset do you use in your last game? -
What a Tanker! from Too Fat Lardies - we continue with a career campaign during Operation Barbarossa
Quote
2) What armies were confronted? -
Germans: 1x PanzerJager I, 1x Panzer IIf, 1x Pz 35(t), 1x SdKfz 231 (6-rad)
Russiand 1x T-26m1939, 1x T-60, 1x Valentine 1x KV-1a
Quote
3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset? -
Pretty much so, yes. Very few times we had to look at the rule book, and every one just confirmed what we thought.
Quote
4) and... was this the first time you used this ruleset? -
Far from it, we've played every Saturday since it was published!
Quote
5) How many players were in the game? -
2 of us.
Quote
6) What went well?
The game flowed smoothly, no issues with that. We both like the mechanics of the rules, and the look of the thing in 10mm scale.
Quote
7) What could have been improved?
I need to work on my terrain - the hills, specifically. I've carved up some old ceiling tiles, but they're not thick enough. Now we have a proper sized tank - the KV - it can actually see over the top of a single layer!

The game itself needs more detail too. We have had to house rule stuff like steep slopes, soft ground, etc. Also the career campaign just doesn't work as published - it's way too slow, and there's too little variety, every game is a meeting engagement as far as rewards go. We need something to reward defending a zone, attacking one, convoying, etc.

As you can tell from the forces listed above, the Russkies have torn the German advance up easily so far. However, we're just about to advance to 1942, and German forces get major upgrades. They need them... I think it's telling that no-one else on the Lardies forum, mail group, or Facebook page is talking about the campaign mode...

:D Coats gentlemen, and no luck transferring photos to my computer. I may be able to do it by emailing them to myself, downloading to a finder file, then uploading to Flickr, finally downloading to Pendraken. Worth doing as both armies are 100% Pendraken, but will take some time, which I won't have until later in the week. Will also post them in the photos section as Italian Wars.

1. FoGR

2, Spanish v French pre-1520 Italian Wars

3. Yes - getting into the rhythm with these - more so than A and M FoG

4. This was my third go with these particular armies

5. Three players - two Spanish and one French (c'est moi)

6. I think the most important thing about this game was my gain in confidence at playing these rules. I liken it to learning a foreign language, ie. you can read the rulebook as much as you like but until you actually play very little sinks in. I learnt more conversational French over four fortnightly holidays than 5 years in school (although I did learn all about open back buses in Paris, which had long been withdrawn by the time I got there aged 19 - ah, the modern textbook  ;D). The Swiss pike and gendarmes began to power forward into the Spanish colunelas and landsknechts wreaking a certain amount of havoc. *

7. Unfortunately the Spanish lighter troops got round my flanks and the colunelas held, despite the landsknechts breaking and routing. The gendarmes then began to crumble. After 1 3/4 hours I had lost four key units and two of my three generals and conceded. As this was one of our morning games, just after 1pm we removed to the pub for lunch and debriefing.

* Another plus was that I bought the Spanish army to keep it in the club and will produce a French army of my own as the one in the photo is being sold and I have the figures to produce a new army.

7) What could have been improved? Not much, dice were on my side!
Barrel soon, but 15-7 win to me.

1) Ronin at Colours
2) Samurai v Koreans
3) Yes
4) No
5) Three players - two young lads took the Samurai, I played the Koreans defending a castle
6) The two lads picked up the rules very quickly and the game flowed well
7) A good game, but I was right, royally rogered - the Korean casualties piled up at an alarming rate once the Samurai broke into the castle

1) What ruleset do you use in your last game? - Kallistra Hordes & Heroes Medieval
2) What armies were confronted? - French and Engish HYW
3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset? - No, not really. Fierce discussions about longbow range (too short) and the use of stakes/pavises.
4) and... was this the first time you used this ruleset? - Nope, we did 2x Poles vs Mongols before. Not entirely happy with that either.
5) How many players were in the game? - 3

The new:
6) What went well? - Nice figures (some of them Kallistra, at least)
7) What could have been improved? - Some of the rules were ambiguous. Not too thrilled about the limitations imposed by the hexagons either.

2. Russian v Turkish 1915
3. Yes - played many games of this excellent rules set
4. No
5. 2 players
6. Easy rules to remember and play. Nicely produced Minifigs figures by a club member
7. I played the Turks and they were slaughtered.

3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset? - yup
4) and... was this the first time you used this ruleset? - narp
5) How many players were in the game? - 2

The new:
6) What went well? Taking out the royal guards with enveloping combined attacks. Breaking up his chariot waves so I could pick on units.
7) What could have been improved? First game with new armies for both if us, lots of improvements and guessing of improvements before the rematch.
Oh, and i need to actually paint more units instead of using a mates Mycenians to fill in!
15-6 to the Mitanni

) What ruleset do you use in your last game? - Target for Tonight
2) What forces were confronted? - RAF vs Luftwaffe
3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset? - Yes, overall does a pretty good job of depicting a raid, though they could be clearer on a few points.
4) and... was this the first time you used this ruleset? - Yes
5) How many players were in the game? - just me, but can be run as a multi player game
6) What went well? - 5 of my 6 Lancasters got back to base in one piece, including X-X Ray which survived a Ju 88C nightfighter literally running rings it (manuveres are done on 6 x 8 gridded board using a deck of playing cards, Lancs move on any black card and the night fighters on red cards, the Ju88 had one sequence of 13 consecutive red cards  :o and managed to hit X-X Ray twice just before she escaped off the board but rolled a 1 for damage both times so did not inflict any meaningful damage..that was a close run thing).
7) What could have been improved? - Some of the rules were ambiguous so I have made up a number of my own house rules - not all Luftwaffe pilots are experten!! ;)

Would I play again? Yes, I used card mounted aircraft bases rather than 1/300 or 1/600 models. My first mission was a raid on Keil's U-Boat pens set in April 1943. Might try a longer, more dangerous mission to "the big city" next. There is also potential for some reverse raids by the Luftwaffe during the "baby blitz" of Jan - April 1944 but need some further research to see how much different the RAF's night fighter defences were compared to the Luftwaffe's fixed Kammhuber Line defences and free roaming Wilde Sau single engine fighters over the target area.

3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset? - Yes, certainly
4) and... was this the first time you used this ruleset? - No
5) How many players were in the game? - four
6) What went well? - Initial dice rolls went in my favour
7) What could have been improved? My team mate over extended their flank meaning 70% of their troops didn't get into action. It didn't help that the majority of their dice rolls were ones or twos. It was a refresher game for a tournament on 10th November. I need to reread the rules again as They are close to DBA but not exactly and I got confused  8-} 8-} 8-}... it doesn't take much these days.

1. Square Bashing
2. 1915 Russians v. Turks
3. Very comfortable with them. A very straightforward set of rules to grasp and organised in such a way that no two games are alike.
4. No
5. Three players - two attacking Turks v. one defending Russian.
6. We chose to play the short version of the game which takes out the pre-game campaign and instead pre-determines attacker and defender. Unfortunately the defender can still lose bases before the game starts (we put this down to a patchy Turkish bombardment to soften up the position). Also taken out of the game are all the assets, but not the higher command orders. Despite this it still gave a very good, exciting game. Though there were  overwhelming odds in the Turks favour, the Russians gave a good account of themselves and the victory calculation at the end showed that the Turks had not done quite as well as they thought they had, allowing the Russian survivors to withdraw at nightfall. The game ran for about 2 1/2 hours, despite the two Turks never having played before.
7. No real scopr for improvement. An excellent game enjoyed by all three participants.

1) What ruleset do you use in your last game? Bitter Woods, a boardgame by Compass Games covering the Battle of the Bulge
2) What armies were confronted? 1944 German v American ground forces
3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset? - No, first playing using the short tournament scenario (6 turns)
4) and... was this the first time you used this ruleset? - Yes
5) How many players were in the game? - two
6) What went well? - The opening orders of battle are imbalanced (historical reality), so the Germans have a powerful attack capability, while the Americans desperately plug gaps, block advances and survive, this was replicated in the game and it keeps both player immersed and the American player interested.
7) What could have been improved? just a better handle on the rules and knowledge of the tempo of the German advance, but this is the sort of game that you have to play a scenario to get that. There are plenty of special turn 1 rules, I think the game should list these rather than the players having to search rules, remember or make their own 'reminder' sheet.

Anyway, very good and I am re-setting it for another game.

2) What armies were confronted? - Mexicans vs Spaniards and Tlaxcalans
3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset? - Yes, certainly
4) and... was this the first time you used this ruleset? - No
5) How many players were in the game? - two
6) What went well? - Heavy cavalry charged and broke two units within minutes, lights took enemy in flank as they charged matchlockmen, shooting was deadly.
7) What could have been improved? Too one-sided for a real game. My foeman observed that rules which governed pike and shot and pistoleers and lancers in Europe don't always give American troops much chance; I think he had a fair point. Rules have already been tweaked a bit.

3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset? - Very
4) and... was this the first time you used this ruleset? - No
5) How many players were in the game? - Solo
6) What went well? - Pretty much 'even Stevens' for both sides, although the British FAO didn't do much...
7) What could have been improved? - The position of the Landwehr minefield to help funnel the British attack into a better killing zone.

1. FOGR
2. Later Poles v Later Ottomans
3. I am finding these rules a lot more manageable that FOG
4. No
5. Two players
6. The game in general went well and the rules are beginning to make sense. The armies were 10mm Pendraken and the Polish hussars looked magnificent (everything painted by my opponent).
7. I was doing really well and then made the classic mistake of blocking my hussars, assuming that they could charge through the screening light cavalry. Alas no, so they were caught by Ottoman cavalry and suffered badly. Still, a useful lesson well learned.

3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset? - mostly
4) and... was this the first time you used this ruleset? - No
5) How many players were in the game? - Two
6) What went well? - A good feel for the subject, enlarged hexes gave room to manage the forces quite nicely.
7) What could have been improved? - I allowed the Prussians to hold places for too long, so they got outmanoeuvred and destroyed. They should have though more about giving ground and simply frustrating the French time-table, rather than trying to deny certain VP hexes.

If we hadn't lost so many Albacores (7/12, the other 5 driven off) we could have claimed a tactical victory ;)

A very balanced scenario that I definitely enjoyed, the Germans seemed to enjoy it as well :)

Best quote of the night was one German commander asking the other "Have you left me anything to fire at", the only ships in range were the sinking British 'heavy' cruiser and destroyers ;D

1) What ruleset do you use in your last game? - 7TV 2nd edition
2) What armies were confronted? - Scooby Doo Gang Vs Dr Who Master, Sea Devils and a big monster.

4) and... was this the first time you used this ruleset? -Yes
5) How many players were in the game? - Two
6) What went well? - Great Terrain
7) What could have been improved? - Felt the rules were so busy attempting to be "Narrative" that most sense of game was lost.

It seems to me that one of two things happens with this thread:
either, a) people tediously copy out the questions before answering them,
or, b) there is some way of automatically inserting the questions when answering them. If it's the latter can someone please let me know how it is done, and also please explain it like I am 5. Thanks.

Copy questions from Mad Lemmy's original post, then paste into my new post....Simples!

1) What ruleset do you use in your last game? - Chain of Command
2) What armies were confronted? - Early War French vs German
3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset? - Yes, although we hadn't played them for a bit.
4) and... was this the first time you used this ruleset? - No
5) How many players were in the game? - 2, myself and Orcs...and we got 3 games in the evening!

The new:
6) What went well? - Orcs' dice throwing, the middle game lasted just one phase. I deployed a section and a senior leader onto the table, then Orcs rolled double 6 (giving him another go), deployed a section and a light mortar, shot me up scoring a lot of hits. Orcs rolls another double 6, shoots me up and adds a tank (which shoots me up and kills my section leader), in this third go he routs my section, I roll stupid dice for how far they go and they run off the table, carrying my officer with them. I roll high on Force Morale tests and now my Force Morale has dropped to 3 so we called it a day on that one!
7) What could have been improved?  Me working out how to attack using the French!

2) What armies were confronted? - Early War French vs German
3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset? - Yes, although we hadn't played them for a bit.
4) and... was this the first time you used this ruleset? - No, but graham was trying some of the new tweaks in the 1940 supplement
5) How many players were in the game? - 2, Myself  and Sunjester ...and we got 3 games in the evening!

The new:
6) What went well? - Orcs' dice throwing, Yes I seemed to get a good number of hits at crucial moments, then Sunjester compounded it by throwing lots of kills and shock in response
7) What could have been improved?  Me actually finding the mojo to look up the 1940 supplement for nasty German tricks.
[/quote]

Sunjester took the resupply option for his VB launchers and on occasions they did lots of damage, but they are a small unit and quite fragile. Nearly scuppered me with one of the French tricks to block my jump off point. I managed to throw the required 6 and enfiladed one of his squads in the open. - Scratch one squad.

Now that I actually get to a wargaming group occasionally I have gotten to branch out a bit:

First visit:
1) What ruleset did you use in your last game? - Great War Spearhead II (although using brigades as manuever element)
2) What armies were confronted? - German v French/BEF, the German counterattack on the Somme in Sept. 1914
3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset? - at this level a good deal of detail was abstracted out making them fairly quick play and easy to learn.
4) and... was this the first time you used this ruleset? - Yes.
5) How many players were in the game? - Six.
6) What went well? Generally everything. - Very smooth play, hidden moves and rudimentary air recce went particularly well.
7) What could have been improved? - Remembering to use my dang divisional arty effectively.

Second visit:
1) What ruleset did you use in your last game? - Disposible Heroes: Point Blank
2) What armies were confronted? - Eastern European Regulars v innumerable zombies. A fire team (AKs and RPG w three xtra rounds)
holds a hill top against the walking (and sometimes running) dead. Played cooperatively with the zombies controlled by game AI.
3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset? - Yes, very fast to learn.
4) and... was this the first time you used this ruleset? - Yes
5) How many players were in the game? - Three
6) What went well? - Never, ever considered a zombie game but was quickly immersed in the story. cooperative play was essential to survival as well as rapidly adapting to the ever changing tactical situation.
7) What could have been improved? It was pretty exciting as it was but fighting in a fixed position allowed us to spend most of our activation points on aiming, firing and reloading. In the end we had to make a mad dash to an APC sent to extract us. Once you are spending most of your activation on movement, the zombies begin to gain the upper hand.

1) What ruleset do you use in your last game? - The Pikemen's Lament
2) What armies were confronted? - Sort of King William's War Dutch vs English
3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset? - Very
4) and... was this the first time you used this ruleset? - No
5) How many players were in the game? - Solo
6) What went well? - The English maneuvering and the Dutch shooting.
7) What could have been improved? - The English shooting and the Dutch command rolls early on. Oh and more figures to choose from, but at least painting has resumed...

1) What ruleset do you use in your last game? - Bloody Big BATTLES! (BBB)

2) What armies were confronted? - Hungarian vs Austro-Russian at the 2nd Battle of Komarom (Hungarian War of Independence, 1848-1849)

3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset? - Yes

4) and... was this the first time you used this ruleset? - First time ... for a couple of weeks.  ;)

5) How many players were in the game? - 4 players, plus me as umpire/photographer

6) What went well? - entertaining ding-dong scrap, ebbed and flowed, plenty for all four players to do, result went down to the wire as usual. And caught up with some mates I hadn't seen for a while. Full AAR on the BBBBlog: http://bloodybigbattles.blogspot.com/2018/12/hungary-1849-komarom-ii.html

7) What could have been improved? - One aspect of the scenario design: specifically, the rule triggering the Austro-Russian reinforcements. Didn't spoil the game, just wasn't quite right to capture the historical situation. Duly tweaked for second playtest next Monday.

I don't usually post here about my regular BBB games. My reason this time is less to do with the ruleset than with the war. The Hungarian War of Independence really deserves more attention from wargamers, given its scale and duration. Of course the trouble is that there is so little info about it in English. As my Hungarian military historian friend Csaba likes to say, Hungary's best defence is not its army but its language ... Anyway, the armies have a variety of pretty uniforms, and plenty of exotic units: the Austrians get their Croat and Russian allies (not to mention Serbs and Rumanians if you want to cover those theatres of the war as well), while the Hungarians get scythe-armed militia, honveds and national guard in colourful uniforms, lots of volunteer legions (German, Polish, Italian, Viennese students), and there are hussars and rockets and ...

As you can tell, I am very into it just now. We've fought 9 battles so far , the 10th is ready to fight, and I'm prepping scenarios for the last 3 of the major actions. I expect we'll finish the war by mid-2019. No doubt a campaign book will follow, as my own small attempt to remedy the lack of info.

1) What ruleset do you use in your last game? - BKCII
2) What armies were confronted? - Fallschirmjager vs British/Canadian Normandy 1944
3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset? - Very
4) and... was this the first time you used this ruleset? - No
5) How many players were in the game? - Two
6) What went well? - The British/Canadian artillery and aircraft.
7) What could have been improved? - The British/Canadian command rolls at times. The Fallschirmjager deployment a tad, but not a lot wrong, it's just hard to face Allied artillery and air support :'( :'( :'(

Yep, damned realistic, especially with me not being able to get any AA fire off at all all game, due to blocked line of sight for my HQ and a complete lack of AA units!!! That is now being addressed as I have 3 units sat in front of me, but my eyes are too tired to focus on the fiddly stuff!

1) What ruleset do you use in your last game? - Sellswords and Spellslingers (my own VSF variant)
2) What armies were confronted? - Gentlemen Agents of Her Imperial Majesty vs assorted natives
3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset? - Yes
4) and... was this the first time you used this ruleset? -  No
5) How many players were in the game? - 2

The new:
6) What went well? - Nothing in the first game, we were stamped on by the natives. In the second game my combat rolls were greatly improved.
7) What could have been improved? - I'm now happy that my VSF tweaks are working, but I need to work on some more infernal devices for my scientists (which take the place of magic in this game).

1) What ruleset do you use in your last game? - Walter Schnaffs (Square Bashing for the FPW)
2) What armies were confronted? - Prussian v French Imperial
3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset? - very
4) and... was this the first time you used this ruleset? - no, used it loads now. One of my favourite four sets
5) How many players were in the game? -  two
6) What went well? - Prussians scored well in the pre game three week campaign.
7) What could have been improved? - French won two days, rolled their victory dice and both times scored poorly resulting in a total of four infantry units being removed to the reserve. Then in the defender's dice rolling they lost a number of individual bases, plus a gun, mitrailleuse and unit of cuirassiers off to the reserves. Then the Prussian shelling started..............

1) What ruleset did you use in your last game? - Bloody Big Battles
2) What armies were confronted? - Early's Confederates vs. Sheridan's Federals at Cedar Creek, October 1864.
3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset? - Reasonably so, but not initially due to unfamiliarity.
4) and... was this the first time you used this ruleset? - Yes
5) How many players were in the game? - me and the schizo (solo)
6) What went well? - The opportunity to get my ACW collection on the table after along absence, try a new set of rules and the second half of the game as my familiarity with the rules increased.
7) What could have been improved? -
Mixed thoughts. The Confederate plan worked quite well but such was the nature of the scenario that at times in the early stages it looked as if they had blown it.  On reflection, I know I missed out a few factors and I should have capitalised on Sheridan's 'influence' more when he arrived on the field to try to turn the Union fortunes around but overall, the omissions probably balanced out for both sides. A few 'swinging back and forth' moments in the game when it appeared that one minute a side was going to win and then the next it would surely lose. Playing it again, perhaps the Rebels should have focused more on taking the objectives earlier but, having said that, the 'diversionary' attacks by Early's Corps on the left wing did help Gordon's right wing attack by drawing Union reinforcements away from the objectives. The final result?  History was changed and Early's reputation restored with the Rebels taking the last objectives and winning on the last turn!

1) What ruleset do you use in your last game? - Firepower, Perry rules that come with their ACW Battle in a Box.
2) What armies were confronted? - Confederate / Union
3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset? - yes
4) and... was this the first time you used this ruleset? - no
5) How many players were in the game? Solo run through
6) What went well? Straight forward rules with little rules referencing
7) What could have been improved? Units behind fencing seem to get too much protection, instead of saving on a 4+, like they would in woods etc, perhaps a 5+ or even 6+ would dampen the effect down for fencing.

1) What ruleset do you use in your last game? - Advanced Squad Leader Starter Kit #1
2) What armies were confronted? - American / German squad level
3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset? - mostly
4) and... was this the first time you used this ruleset? - no
5) How many players were in the game? Played as a solo game
6) What went well? Senario 1 does a good job in tutoring the gamer in the balance between laying down fire and moving and also the perils of moving in the open against good order troops.
7) What could have been improved? I played this really late at night when I was too tired to work with mental cohesion through the various processes - this was my main obstacle to smooth playing.

2) What armies were confronted?   Ava vs Ming
3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset?  Certainly
4) and... was this the first time you used this ruleset? No
5) How many players were in the game?    Two
6) What went well?    My Burmese elephants and spearmen both survived flank attacks that could have wiped them out. Hmmm, you do get outflanked a lot fighting against these huge armies like the Chinese. Portuguese mercenaries, their west African slave troops, and the Japanese mercs all gave good value for money.
7) What could have been improved?    My artillery had an annoyingly low kill rate. On the other hand, the same was true of the Ming guns, and given that the Burmese use lots of ellies, on balance I was not badly served by the dice.

Have to start a new thread soon......As we're galloping towards the end of 2018.

At least the days are going to draw out now, for we poor saps who live in the Northern hemisphere.

What I hadn't realised, for certain.....(Though I'd thought it was 'the case', before,) is that the mornings will still continue to get darker for a while, and it's just the daylight at the end of the day that extends to start with. (I heard one of the weathermen confirming this on the radio, a couple of days ago.)

Roll on when it's light at 5 in the morning.....I like that !  :)

Er......Does that make sense....Or an I gibbering, again ?
Yep....I'm gibbering ! :D

As this thread cones to it's weary end for 2018, like a prizefighter in his last round, or Techno on his last figure of the day...
1) What ruleset do you use in your last game? - Star Trek Ascendancy
2) What armies were confronted? - Ferengi vs Klingons vs Cardasians vs Romulans (me)
3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset? - eventually, but it took me a long time to get my head round the build/research system each turn, lost out because of silly mistakes vs more experienced players.
4) and... was this the first time you used this ruleset? - yes, for me and the Ferengi player, the other two had played before.
5) How many players were in the game? - 4
6) What went well? No one was violent for a very long time, we were all concentrating on getting resources and upgrades built.
In the last turn the Cardasian jumped into my homework, breaking his trade agreement and nuking Romulus! I, in turn used a whole pile of abilities i had earned , decloaked  a whole fleet that the Klingons did not spot, and took over the Klingon homeworld and was in orbit over the Cardasian homeworld, having torched his guard flett, but ran out of goes when they ascended to godhood!
7) What could have been improved?  Not spotting the Cardasians plan soon enough!
Cardasians win, me second, Klingons splintered, Ferengi were not rich enough.
:)

1) What ruleset do you use in your last game? - The Expanse

2) What armies were confronted? - UN vs Martian Commonwealth (me) vs The Belters vs Protogen

3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset? - Yes. Finally played it often enough to get all the rules right :)

4) and... was this the first time you used this ruleset? - Nope, all players had played several games

5) How many players were in the game? - Initally planned for three, on the day we had four, which is the maximum.

6) What went well? Much fun had, much banter exchanged, many nice things said about my replacement of the spaceship tokens with Brigade Miniatures spaceships, several echoes of events from the shows.

7) What could have been improved? My ability to persuade the others not to attack me :) Still came second though.

1) What ruleset do you use in your last game? - Bloody Big Battles with additions for a solo game

2) What armies were confronted? - 15mm French (me) vs Mexicans (programmed)

3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset? - Yes.

4) and... was this the first time you used this ruleset? - Nope

5) How many players were in the game? - One - me

6) What went well? BBB's ability to generate realistic outcomes - for instance 3 Mexican militia units attacked a Zouave unit forcing it to retreat, 2 of the Militia units pursued it, the Zouaves rallied and advanced against them, one Militia broke and fled, the other froze in place. I could imagine the Militia going "Hey we've beat these tough guys - let's finish them off - Oh f*k they're coming back for more!"

7) What could have been improved? nothing

Viva Mexico! A post-apocalyptic game in which a horde of Mexican zombies swarm in to what's left of the United Counties of America, a small enclave covering 2/3 of Vermont and 1/4 of Maine. No escape North, Canada having had the foresight to trump Trump's wall.

Glad we agree that building a southern wall is a good idea.  :-bd

1) What ruleset do you use in your last game? - For King and Parliament

2) What armies were confronted? - Covenant/Parliament vs Royalists

3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset? - Yes.

4) and... was this the first time you used this ruleset? - No

5) How many players were in the game? - two

6) What went well? My opponent had great fun  :)  I did manage to destroy two Royalist cavalry units, other than that not much  ;)

7) What could have been improved? I could have drawn a few more chits numbered above 8.....they were definitely in the bucket. This was the debut game for my Scots Horse and they are apparently armed with damp powder and rubber swords. Most of the game they blasted away with their pistols as they closed for little result and in hand to hand combat they similarly just couldn't match the Royalist hits inflicted on them.

I will post a more detailed batrep if I get the chance in the next couple of days. Paul has plenty of photographic evidence of the number of 1's and 2's that I drew.

Thanks for a very enjoyable game Pierre :)

Your ability to find the 1s & 2s certainly helped the Royalist cause ;D

The game was closer than Pierre suggests ;)

I was about to lose control of most of my force, of my 8 units of Horse:

Will look forward to seeing the pics of the game, Peter and Paul! The Scottish horse lived up to the first-use curse. The trick with Scottish horse is to always fight other Scottish horse!  ;)

1) What ruleset do you use in your last game? - Honours of War - somewhere in Western Germany 1758.

2) What armies were confronted? - 10mm French vs Allied Army of Observation.  French started with 5 battalions (1 superior), 1 light detachment (small, inferior), 3 cavalry regiments, a dragoon regiment (inferior) and an 8# battery defending a ridge and a village with another 2 battalions arriving during the game.  The Allies had 7 battalions (1 superior), 2 cavalry (superior) and 2 dragoon regiments and a 12# battery.

3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset? - Broadly

4) and... was this the first time you used this ruleset? - Yes

5) How many players were in the game? - solo

6) What went well?  Interesting combats and influence of different capabilities of brigadiers. Found out the benefit of superior cavalry!  MG Zastrow managed to roll well on most of his command rolls so his brigade stormed the village earlier than I was expecting.

7) What could have been improved? My understanding of the rules.  Not placing supporting lines of units in close proximity for the lead unit to retreat through (M Hamilton's brigade of Cavalerie suffered from this).

Regards
