Title: Techno AWOL again soon.
Post by: Techno on 30 November 2017, 09:55:13 AM
Just so's I don't forget to post this until it's too late......

I'll be absent for a while from Friday the 15th of Dec, as I've at last heard that that's when my 'procedure' is to be carried out. (As long as it doesn't get cancelled.... it's hardly life threatening...Not even a general anaesthetic ......Just a nerve block in the spine.)

I'll give you the gory details later......Though it will come with a warning that some of you will find that it's FAR too much information....and probably won't want to read it.
The handful of those that already know what's going to be done have winced.....(Don't deny it.....I know you did to start with.)

Also got the delights of another CT scan on my lungs tomorrow......Hey Ho !!  ;)

Cheers - Phil

All the best with that Phil, whatever it is.

Waiting for the results of a pelvic x-ray myself.

I think that many gathered here are getting to that sort of age! Hopefully it increases the empathy/ sympathy to be found here.

Thanks, Gents. :)

Now.....

PREVIOUSLY ON NCIS TECHNO'S TROUBLES.

(Don't read on if you're likely to find "Mens' Problems" vexing in any way.)

From the point I bored you all with the travails of having a grossly enlarged bladder, and having to stick a 'straw' up my little chum so that I could wee more comfortably.
I think the last thing I told you was that I'd had to go to A&E one evening, because instead of urine coming out of the 'straw', it was just fresh blood....and quite a lot of it.

In A&E, they attempted to 'unblock' everything, without any success....... So the consultant stuck a hypodermic needle in my belly and said, "Well...That's just urine coming out", and then proceeded to give me half a dozen local anaesthetic jabs in my belly, made a hole, and then inserted a 'supra pubic catheter'.....(look it up if you really want to know. ;)) :-&

This wasn't uncomfortable or painful....But did feel 'odd' for the first couple of weeks, until I got used to it...Especially when trying to go to sleep.

This worked fine for two or three months....and I knew it wasn't going to be there for longer than necessary.....But recently the damn thing has kept blocking up, and instead of having it changed every ten weeks of so, I've had to go and see the nurse every two or three weeks to have a new one put in.

When I saw another consultant, I was informed that the plan would be to 'shave' my grossly enlarged prostate by sticking 'something' up you know where and performing 'surgery' without any really invasive action.
"Couldn't I simply go back to the 'straws' ?", said I.
"No.....Because you almost certainly stabbed your prostate, the last time you used one, and that's why you bled so much."
"Oh....Fair enough." :-[

You're now up to date.  ;)

With all the problems I've had recently with the 'blocking'....I can't wait to get it sorted out....Though I'm not REALLY looking forward to the procedure itself......(I'll be awake while they do it....And it's going to feel really weird being paralysed from the waist down for six hours or so.)

Apparently, after they've done the deed, I'll be attached to oodles of drips to continuously flush my bladder, and I'll be allowed home once there's no, (or next to no) blood coming out. This shows things are healing properly.

Theoretically, it's in on the Friday...have the procedure the same day....Lie in bed all day Saturday 'being flushed'.....And home on the Monday, all being well !!

There you go....Who's got their legs crossed.  ;D ;D ;D

Cheers - Phil

At least I won't have to go and see the surgery nurse so often/again ?
I think the poor lass thinks I've been stalking her, as I've seen her so many times in the past two or three months.

From what I gather, the nurses in the hospital will be running around like flies with blue bottoms after I've had the 'op', changing the drips, and emptying the wee bag more than a few times during the first day/night I'm in there.
I'll take my tiny little DAB radio in with me so I can keep up with something from the outside World......I don't think I'll get much sleep the first night.

 X_X

When I was last in t'ospital earlier in the year.....I got woken....not by the nurses....but by a bloody alarm 'bleeper' on the stand with the drip.
That felt like every hour or so.  (:| (:| (:| (:|

I managed to suss out which button I needed to press to stop the damn thing, before the nurse heard it, and came and switched it off.)

The final night I was there, there was some poor old chap who was completely confused/senile/drugged up (a couple of 'wards' along the corridor.....The 'wards' only had four people in each one, and weren't far apart)

Poor sod thought he was still in his own home, and kept shouting at the nurses....."Who ARE you.....Get out of my house....I'll call the police if you don't **** off."....OVER AND OVER.

Kept 'my' little ward amused for hours, until about 4o'clock in the morning.

What fun !!

Cheers - Phil

I was in for an op my ankle a while back, and Selly Oak Hospital was also the Centre for Defence Medicine, so the wards had injured servicemen (and presumably women, but I was on a chaps only ward!) who'd been flown back as serious cases from Iraq/Afghanistan.

I don't think anyone got much sleep, but from the sound of it, was much much worse for them than the rest of us :(

The regular nurses had considerable help from military trainees, who were all very smart, keen and polite, but all looked about twelve :/

Once again.

Many thanks, Guys.

Be off for the CT scan soon. (I feel I'm wasting NHS dosh for this one....as what they're checking is almost certainly not in the slightest threatening !)
Just hoping I don't have to come back and see the district nurses re this frigging catheter, when we come back from Haverford West.....It's playing mega silly b*ggers, this morning.

Last time I was in hospital (when I was about 20) I had on one of those paper theatre gowns and paper underwear- very fetching.

Anyway the paper underwear was a bit on the small size and when the  nurse came to give me the pre-op jab in my behind she went to move the paper underwear out of the way , and it ripped, not just a little bit but all the way to the elastic.   Nurse said " Whoops I have ripped your pants off "  I  replied " Your a bit keen, but its the best offer I have had today". We were both laughing so much she had to go and get a colleague to give me the jab.

I work for IT in a hospital and often have to scrub up and go into the operating rooms, and since I sport a beard, they make me wear a beard net....yes they exist, yes they are paper, and yes they look ridiculous!    ;D

Post by: Techno on 20 December 2017, 08:42:24 AM
Many thanks all.

It really is wonderful to be back. #:-S

Feel a little more 'with it' than I did yesterday.

Must admit I'm a teeny bit disappointed with the outcome so far.....But that may be me being a bit impatient and expecting things to mend quicker than they're likely to.
Still got the catheter in my belly to do a 'final drain' each time I need to go to the loo...(For a while I had a second catheter, as well).......The 'belly catheter' will hopefully get removed in a few weeks time, PROVIDED I'm not still retaining too much urine in my bladder.

The procedure itself wasn't too bad, but didn't go absolutely perfectly, as the spinal block didn't work as it should have done, because of the curve in my spine, where I've got the b*ggered disc....The anaesthetic didn't want to follow the usual path, so I ended up having a 'double dose'.

FINALLY...When I couldn't lift my legs/feet and couldn't feel anything when matey was prodding me with something like a cocktail stick we were good to go.

Watching the screen as I got 'scraped', was interesting for about 10 minutes.....But then got a bit (very) boring.
After 20 minutes (?) the spinal block started wearing off at the top of 'numb' area, and I could feel the surgeon poking some sort of suction device inside the bladder......(This was there to remove the bits that were being scraped off.)

This sensation went from uncomfortable to being rather painful, and for the final 20 minutes or so I was lying there, gritting my teeth and willing the surgeon to finish asap.

Got nothing but praise for the nurses that looked after me !

First night was a bit of a sod, a they had to wake me every two hours and check my blood pressure, as I'd had a double dose of spinal block......and there was someone making a lot of noise in a room close by.....I don't think I got more than half an hours sleep that night. (:|

Was really peed off when my temperature started going up, as that delayed me being able to come home.

Anyway....It dropped down to normal after about 36 hours....... but as I was sitting ready to come home yesterday, one of the Doc's came into the day room with the news that they HAD cultured some sort of bug in the 'bloods' they'd taken, and gave me some antibiotics to take for the next few days.

There's an awful lot more I could bore you with...... ;D ;D ;D ;D......but I'll call that it for now.

Cheers - Phil

Glad to see you finally got out, Phil. At least that part is now over with - although, a bit of a sod, to say the least, that the anaesthetic started wearing off 20 - 30 minutes into the procedure - must make you think what the pre-anaesthetic days were like in most of the historical eras we wargame in.  :'(

Onwards and upwards (on second thoughts, in view of what you have just gone through, maybe just "onwards"?  :-[ ).

(although a suction pump on the bladder sounds a bit like misadventure to me)
Title: Re: Techno AWOL again soon.
Post by: Techno on 20 December 2017, 09:41:20 PM
Thanks, again, gang !!  :)

The actual suction action of whatever it was, wasn't the problem (I think), Matt.
It was the apparent rather forcible way it seemed to be being poked around......At least, that's what it felt like.

I'm sure that was a complete misperception. It just felt like that, at the time.

Have to admit that I'm feeling somewhat down, at the moment, because everything seems to have taken a good few steps backwards from the time I left the hospital.  :(
I expect (hope) it's just the healing process b*ggering things up for a while, and I'll get the real benefit in the next week or two.

Cheers - Phil

Thanks again gang. :)

As I said.....I just seem to have taken a good few backwards steps since I came home...and I'm really back to the same point I was at, before I had the 'scraping'.

It doesn't truly bother me if I end up with the tube in my belly for the rest of my life. I'm just disappointed that at the moment the 'op' doesn't seem to have worked very well.
It could be something to do with the new drugs I was prescribed and have only been taking since I got back to Techno Towers.

If it's still the same in about a fortnight, I'll assume it hasn't worked.....and just go from there.

Still.... gotta give things a chance to heal and settle.
Not feeling so 'miffed' today.  ;)

Cheers - Phil

Hopefully there'll be some improvement for the suffering you've had to endure...
Good luck!

Cheers,

It's sort of improving, Rob.

But then it plays silly sods, again.

(It IS very weird......I feel I'm having to learn to pee normally, all over again......I'll swear I'm using different muscles than I did before, to get things to work, 'down there'  8-} :-/ :-/ :-/)
