Title: Colours 2017
Post by: Steve J on 31 July 2017, 07:01:57 AM
My aim is to attend Colours this year, but am still awaiting info as to whether I will be a punter or helping out on a demo game. For those planning on going to the show, there is a pdf show guide on the link below:

http://www.nrwc.org.uk/colours-2017 (http://www.nrwc.org.uk/colours-2017)

Hopefully I might get to see some of you there. Note to self: send in an order to collect at the show!

I will be there for the first time in several years. I will be involved in running the Liverpool Wargames  Association Flames of War participation game.

Just realised that the show guide is listed as for last year :-. Have contacted them to see if this is this years guide, but with a date typo, or not.

Does anyone know of any demo games being put on this year? I know on the The Wargames Website they still had space available a month or so ago, which is unusual. Hope there are some good games as that's my main reason for attending!

Hoping to make it again this year, but need to work out the logistics - the three youngest sproggs will probably want to come, but my best gaming buddy can't make it this year. I'll either have to sneak out alone when no-one's looking or twist my wife's arm to come help with riot control!  =) 8-}

Cheers!

Well Steve, if you fancy trying to stop a German hospital train departing Stalingrad, as I said earlier I shall be there.

I can't make it myself this year, but there will be a BBB participation game - I think it might be Gettysburg.

I can now confirm that Crispin Matson will be running Gettysburg at Colours. The game covers all three days of the battle. Anyone interested in participating for however short or long a time, or in watching for a bit, or just in having a chat or saying hello - please do!

Great to hear the Gettysburg game is confirmed. Still nothing on their website about the demo games, which is not good IMHO :(

Thanks, Andy. Have fun at Stalingrad! (As someone probably said sardonically in 1942. In German.)

I can now confirm that Simon Miller and I will be putting on a10mm ECW game using our new Ruleset 'TtS:For King and Parliament!'  Figures will be a mix of AIM/Minifigs and Pendraken, about 600 horse and 1,200 foot fighting for the future of  Borsetshire. Captain General Grundy against Nigel, Lord Pargetter. What is not to like?

Well, really looking forward to going to the show tomorrow. This is the first show in years that I haven't been involved in putting on a game, so I will actually have quite a bit of time really get the feel of the show. In previous years it's always been a quick dash around at lunchtime. Plans are to:

- pick up a load of pre-ordered figures from Pendraken :).
- probably pick up some flags, odds'n'sods from Pendraken, depending upon what catches my eye.
- catch up with Mike Embree, whom I'm giving a lift to the show. Always great to talk to, but whether he feels the same way...
- catch up with Bruce Weigle and take part in his game if at all possible.
- check Leman's Stalingrad game, even though it's FoW ;).
- check out Mollinary's ECW game and possibly take part.
- catch up with Craig of Tiny Terrain and his Mexican Wars game.
- try and take plenty of photos of the games, especially ones that catch my eye.
- take a tour of the traders, but really only tend to look at the books as most sell figures of scales i'm not interested in.
- might look at the B'n'B, as long as it's not the usual rugby maul.

For me the show marks the start of my return to wargaming after the Summer break. Lots of new projects planned, but whether real life and work will allow me to make much progress on these remains to be seen.

Steve J:

I am put in mind of an exchange in Chandler's The Lady in the Lake:

"Did he say 'whom'?"
"Yes, but don't shoot him. There is such a word."
"Yes, so I'd heard. I just never knew where they kept it."

(from memory)

Good day at the show. Met Leman and Meirion (sorry I didn't recognise you straight off :-[) but failed to have a chat with Mollinary as he was busy with his ECW game. Sadly the BBB Gettysburg game wasn't on show, but this allowed me to spend more time at Bruce Weigle's table. Photos and show report to follow tomorrow all being well.

No worries Steve. I barely recognise myself these days ;)

Great to catch up with you, Leman and Leon  :)

I only got to say a quick hello to Mollinary's because he was busy demonstrating.  Have to complement his table: beautiful figures and scenery and an imaginative scenario :-bd

Cheers,

Meirion

Good to chat with everyone yesterday and nice to see another 10mm game on show, there's been quite a few this year!  Mollinary and Simon Miller were using their upcoming 'For King and Parliament' rules:

Had a great day out at Colours, picking up everything I was after, and a bit more besides. Also picked up a copy of 1871. Generally I play FPW using BBB as it is more manageable for the epic battles than the likes of 1870. However 1871 has some smaller scenarios played at quarter scale which allows for things like companies to be represented. Furthermore the rules have been streamlined to both ease and speed play (e.g. the play sheet is now multicoloured double-sided rather than four sides of close monochrome type) making these small scenarios a do-able proposition.

Good to meet up with Dave and Leon (and pick up my goodies), as well as Steve J, Meirion, David Lanchester and Simon Miller. Also my brother and nephew were there, and he bought me a Pendraken Schleswig army for my imminent birthday to enable me to pursue the Trumpton Wars with troops actually from the 1840s, rather than stand-ins from the FPW.

The Stalingrad game went well, seemed to attract some attention. A number of participants, playing the Russians, took great pleasure in preventing the German commander from escaping on the hospital train, as well as removing a couple of their own political officers.

Many thanks to Newbury and Reading for putting on a good show.

I was there in the afternoon - it's a really good show - my only gripe is the lighting which I find to be a bit on the dim side

Putting names and faces together is a bit beyond me nowadays

I certainly spoke to one of the guys running the Stalingrad game which looked very good - I'm looking forward to seeing the Berlin version

And I also had a chat with one of the chaps from the big ECW game about the minifigs/aim figures he had had for some 25 years! The pike blocks looked like pike blocks - lovely

I know I chatted to Dave & Leon because I gave them money and they gave me toys - WW2 Winter Russians for my BKC Russo-Finnish War project

Personally disappointed - went hoping to pick up the TANKS starter set and the Frostgrave rulebook, but nobody was selling these. :-(

Arrived about 11:00 - the ground floor was very busy then. Agree about the lighting downstairs - very gloomy. Upper levels were much better. Daylight!

Pendraken stand seemed very busy every time I walked by. Hope it was worth it for you chaps.

Some pics of the show and a few thoughts on the day:

I too noticed that there didn't seem to be many rulesets on sale. If there were I missed them. I heard a few other gamers that were also a bit miffed.

Thanks for the tour Steve. At my last main show, I thought there was ana absence of rulebooks (mind you Caliver have stopped attending) and that the balance of scale diversity was out and very much in favour of 28mm. It looks like a bit of a trend, yet your photos of the tables is still reflecting the popularity of the little chaps. Not sure what to make of that.

Hi all,  well finally made it from Canada to my first convention in the U.K.  I picked up my order from Leon which I am very excited to get painted.  By chance I met Mollinary on the Friday. Thanks Andrew, you Ian and Simon were very good in taking me under your wing for the day.  I really enjoyed the ECW game on Saturday.  Great set of rules which contributed to the enjoyment of the game.

All in all, it was a great day, even if I spent a years war gaming budget in one day!  Well worth the trip and looking forward to the pandamoneum of Salute next April.

Leon was great to finally meet you and to Andrew, Simon, Ian and Bruce, thank you again and was good meeting you guys as well.

Cheers,

Scott

It was a pleasure to meet you Scott, and we really appreciated you playing your part as a Royalist in Borsetshire. It was also great to meet so many other forum members, but we really should organise some badges for the fiuture!  I look forward to seeing some  photos once you have painted up all your goodies.

Best,

Andrew

Come on Mollers, there I was with Leman stamped all over me, but to be honest you were thoroughly engaged in the game, which was spectacular. Consequently I had a good natter with Simon about future TtS developments.

Everyone seems to have had a good natter with Simon!  I knew you were there, but every time I looked round, you'd gone. I did see loads of familiar faces,  but sadly rarely got the time to exchange more than the occasional pleasantly.

Thanks to Leon, Steve J and Obsidian 23 for the pics/blog report....

the ECW game looks very good, pretty much what I would envisage terrain density wise for 10mm games of that ilk - a bit of terrain but not too much (see the thread about our Baroque game where we used the terrain system in the rules which left us with only 3 terrain pieces on the board - all the more room to manuvere in?  ;)
