I'm slowly (very slowly) painting up both sides to do GC at 1:20 using British Grenadier - using the OOB from the back of the rules. Apparently the new scenario book will change the OOB and make it a 1:10 game but i don't think i'll have the will to change my plans!!
Here's my progress so far - i'll put up each unit as i finish but dont expect regular updates :) Simon

Only another 40+ battalions to go and more artillery and cavalry :'(
These look damn fine Simon ;) I'm a big fan of AWI and have a very large collection of 15's which just dont see the light of day because I cant find a rule set I actually like :o
*Very* nice indeed Simon...very nice 8)
nosher: have you had a look at R&F or BP yet? Or Bob Barnetson's WM variant? Worth a look...
Those Jaegers are a real favority of mine. I am really impressed you went with the striped pants for the Bose regiment and the red and white band on the Highlanders. Looks very nice and I am sure took quite a bit of time.
Impressive paintjobs on such tiny models!!
Those are class!
Where did you get the flags? (I have a feeling elsewhere you've said you hand painted them?)
I've gotta say I was impressed with the stripy pants as well! And if you've handpainted the flags, even more so.
:)
Hi guys - thanks for all the kind comments. The flags are handpainted (i couldnt find any printed ones that i liked - sorry yes i know Pendraken do some :) ). I normally find a similar flag online (from somewhere like Warflag) and print it down in a very faint grey (sort of like doing a tracing). Then over-draw the key features of the flag using the print as a guide/template with a black micromarker pen and paint the colours inbetween the black lines. Surprisingly its not as difficult as you think - after all a British flag has a surface area bigger than 2 x 10mm figures so the detail is larger than trying to paint detail on the figures at times.
Simon
Great work! Very impressive.
your attention to detail is great. The stripes on the pants and the highlander checks are great.
Final batch of the Brits are now complete (except of course for the generals. Did i mention that it would be nice to have generals :) ). I'll be taking a break now from AWI to catch up on some other projects but then i'll be back to paint up some bad guys for this lot to fight ....

This may be a boring question, but the bases of these figures were beautiful!
I have been using GW flock so far, which I thought looked great, but no longer do...
What flock has been used for your bases?
/ Cornwallis
:-bd very nice indeed. Brings back memories, I did Guilford some time ago, Brits in 28mm and the opposition in 1/72 plastic (way to expensive in 28mm). Eccentric or what?
Great stuff, goatmajor.
What a pity, that I'll do single base battalions ;)

The first mention of the Regimental Goat is in Lt. Frederick MacKenzie's diary for St. David's Day 1775 when the Regiment was quartered in Boston prior to the onset of the American Revolution. The Goat is described as
"...with gilded horns and adorned with ringlets of flowers."

Blake - apologies, this one slipped my mind; I've got a day off tomorrow so I'll try to dig them out...some of the codes I used were workarounds though which can be updated now the AWI range is so much more complete :)
I missed this thread completely first time around
Just to say what damn fine work GM's done :-bd =D>....And hopefully help Mike (Rougue) find the links he's after.
Cheers - Phil.
Blimey it's a long time since I updated this thread. Somehow in the years I have been pottering away at this project I have changed from doing the battle at 1:10 instead of 1:20. I did a tally up last night and unsurprisingly there's a Pendraken order being put together today....
Okay so here's the American artillery. Captains Singleton and Finley ready to give those British a taste of American iron!

Re the trees - I made them myself DP - twisted wire and railway clump foliage. A bit time consuming but strangely therapeutic !
Very nice Goat Major! 8)
Nice to have an update. I'm making plans for using my AWI minis for soem ImagiNations gaming at present, so nice to see some artillery painted up 8)
Thanks for the info. that looks like a project that has really taken off.
Those look terrific GM !
Cheers - Phil
Excellent, GM. Does your change of figure-scale mean you have to double the size of your units?
Not exactly. I started using the scenario in the original British Grenadier rulebook. Since then they updated it and re-scaled it at 1:10 (in their Scenario Book 3). But more significantly than the ratio change was the building in of new research - primarily from the Babits & Howard book*. So some units are just slightly bigger but the Americans in particular have many more militia units and generally a fuller OOB than the original scenario.
Oh and just to make life difficult for me, since I started doing this, Clib sculpted the correct figures for the Brigade of Guards so now I have do re-do my originals :o
* Long, Obstinate & Bloody by Babits & Howard is an absolute must-have for AWI fans. Fantastically well researched and full of essential info for the wargamer.

Either way they look very good and set off the units very well :)

Very nice work indeed, really well painted and lovely compositions.
Nice one!
Excellent, Simon. Beautifully painted. =D> =D> =D>
Superb painting. Always fancied doing this using Charles Grants refight in "The Wargame" , just never got around to starting it.
Thanks all.
Paul - the flags are conjectural. I'm not sure there's any evidence at all for the militia flags at GC. My flag technique is to print down a Black and White template from the Internet and then overpaint it. So I just picked ones that looked nice and many of them are definitely wrong.... But who's to say otherwise ;)

I suspected that would be your answer, about the only flag we seem to be sure about is the "Guildford Courthouse" flag which definitely wasn't at the battle ;)
Yes I was thinking of using that one for Greene's command stand
Well I've emerged from my deep freeze and my Guildford Courthouse project is finally back on again. First I had to do an audit of the figures and tonight I've undercoated those that will make up the balance of The 2nd Maryland Regt. Sorting out the makeup , nomenclature and uniforms of the Continental Regts at GC is a bit of a nightmare, I suspect no one knows the right answer..

So this is now the painting project at the top of the queue. Other than a brief planned diversion to do some Undead in March I will finish all my forces to do GC at 1:10 in the next couple of months. Currently outstanding are
2nd Virginia (or 5th depending on who you believe)
Balance of 1st Maryland and 2nd Maryland
Lee's horse
Top-ups for 33rd, 23rd and van Bose to convert them from 1:20 to 1:10
British Legion cavalry
RA 6 pdr
British Guards in proper uniform to replace the 1768 warrant figures I've currently got painted
,
At least I've got all the militia done .....
These look great, very crisp painting
I was thinking of throwing an entry into the painting competition before the real artists come along. Looks like I'm too late ...

Yes it's a minefield. Most accounts just say 4th and 5th VA. The British Grenadier scenario says 1st and 5th. Babits (who I normally trust) says that is the 1st and 2nd and that other references to 4/5 are erroneous though frustratingly he doesn't give his source. The GC national park service say 1st and 2nd but that they are state line troops not continentals ! Not that any of it matters but of course but even so , I think all troop deployments in war zones really need to consider the needs of future Wargamers.
Wow, really stunning! Compliments!

Superb
Great work, indeed! The detail is very good with clean lines. I'm also currently painting Pendraken AWI figures and wish I had your skill and speed. I really like the way you've done the hunting shirts. I compared my own officer with yours and I'm quite chuffed to say my own effort looks as if it could stand alongside yours. But it has to be said my officer got extra special attention (my rank and file are probably not as good). I like the colour you used for the breeches - what colour was that? Going by the sources I've looked at, I would probably have chosen a darker blue for the coats (in fact, I did) - also, I'm not sure, but going by the thickness of their legs below the knee, it looks as if the loading figures may have half-gaiters so you might want to look at these again. Overall; superb (do you take commissions?). Expecting you to enter the Painting Competition.
@Phil (Techno): make your next mobile phone a Samsung - cracking camera.
Cheers all.
Westmarcher - thanks thats some interesting points. Half gaiters. You may be right! Just in time before i do my Virginians :)
Re the Blue coats - i agree on them being probably darker. The picture slightly lightens them but also in this scale i think it helps to make things a bit brighter and the contrasts starker otherwise the colours get a bit lost. I would certainly paint them darker in 28mm.
The breeches were both foundry triads - white and buff. Though i used vallejo ivory rather than pure white for the highlights
Sorry I don't do commissions - i paint at the speed of a lazy glacier :)

Phil most devices should tell you the nearest connection. Admitedly you will probably have to put the password in, which for my hub is an absolute pain particularly on the smart TV's
If you want stuff to work instantly. Buy Apple kit. As it is all from the same manufacturer for both hardware and software once you have one device setup the others all can check in with the first device to get settings. You pay a premium for this.
If you are using Windows and Android, stuff will work but it will take much more effort to set it up.

It's somewhat ironic, in that Techno Towers has a

A TV engineer once told us....You're actually

Cheers - Phil. :)
Phil my hub came with a nice sticky which is on the HP lap top, and a plastic tablet which is on the chest of draws next to me bed adjacent to the toshiba lap top. Check your phone - it may not need the password, look in settings my new one has a button for it, and I'm pretty certain the old one did as well.

Crawling around on the floor, getting covered in dog hair, trying to read the teeny weeny label on the back of the hub, without losing my temper.....or pulling all the wires out.....So I can read the bloomin' thing in comfort.
Take a photo of the code with your phone.. I do this all the time with hard to read or awkward to see things
Also lots of modern hubs have the code on a removable piece.

Forbes....Apple....NO. ;)
I get a fraction teed off with the updates they keep sending me.....I simply want my iPod to play me the music I enjoy..(Though the aural definition of any music downloaded is next to complete cr*p...I don't want any other 'experience'.)
This is because you are running it on Windows. On Mac hardware it would just auto update. But no one (other than you and my wife) is still using iPods. Everyone just uses their phone to store music. You really won't want to go back to a CD player. Skipping, Changing discs. Finding discs. No thanks.
Forbes....the phones we've got don't take photos.....they're that ancient. ;D ;D
Apple would update on the PC....If I let it. ;D
I'd far rather listen to something approaching the original 'sound' than hideously compressed files....They sound poop compared to CDs.....And those are pants compared to vinyl.
I'll stick to my drawers full of CDs and a half decent stereo system......most of the time.
Mr iPod only gets used late at night.....when I probably wouldn't notice .
Each to his own. ;)
Cheers - Phil.

I'd simply just give up with me, Forbes...... ;)
I'm never ever going to change.
I'm more than happy to bimble along in my own sweet way. ;D ;D

Hi Ned Ludd
Started the Virginian 2nd yesterday. No particular evidence for blue cuffs but I wanted some variation from other regiments, the beauty of AWI is that you can pretty much make it up as you go along for American uniforms . This regiment is reported as especially ragged so I may add patches and stuff when the unit is finished

Can I recommend Vaubanner, who rescaled his flags to 10mm for me.
Thanks Lord Speedy. I'm a hand painting masochist though....

Might I please ask to what dimensions you asked them to rescale them to?I presume around 10-12mm across the pole and the same on the other axis?
Thank you,
Theo
Simon,
those are gorgeous my friend. The whole thread is a joy to navigate.

Thanks. Definitely worth some "from 3 ft" experimentation for the ordinary troops. And my Nap scots will be up for painting alongside the non-kickstarter long before I reach the Jacobites. I'm wondering about scoring in a "noughts and crosses" pattern with a scalpel because any wash/ink could then pick that up. I'll report back circa 2026 at current painting rate.
Most military sets are very dark, so the impression is what you need although Will could probably paint it accurately 3 times betterer dan moi, 3 times as fast.
It's time for texturing. That's no way to spend a bank holiday weekend

I'll be a minority of one but I think the plain black contrasting with reds and blues makes the figures look even more outstanding.
great painting, everything is neat and vibrant!
Looking forward to seeing the results of a productive bank holiday weekend :!!
While I wait for some basing to dry , a bit of WIP on the flags

Extra wow

Your whole AWI project looks superb GM :-bd
10mm handpainted flags....I'm impressed...I've done some Scots ECW flags in 10mm that I'm reasonably pleased with using MS Paint, but not tried hand painted ones that small......
One tip to remember when you mount you flags is to ensure that you don't leave the edges white (from the paper edge), take the time to edge the flag in the appropriate colour(s), does make a big difference visually ;)
So it's just over 11 years since I first started this thread. This post is the last update. I've finished (hurrah). I now have completed the full order of battle for Guilford Courthouse. Pics of all the units are on the blog at https://goatmajor.org.uk/projects/guilford-courthouse-project/. But here are a couple of tasters of the recent units. Thanks for sticking with me on this guys and all the encouraging comments that kept me going (albeit slowly!!!)

Congratulations! I had a look at your blog and with all of your figures beautifully painted and based, what an excellent 'finale' to your project.* :-bd
*until you start to add to it again! ;)
Excellent stuff
:-bd =D> :-bd =D> :-bd =D>
Congratulations on completing this project and the really high standard of painting and basing =D> =D> =D>
You have presented the units so well that I can readily identify all the uniformed units of both sides :-B
Those flags are very nice.
I create mine in Microsoft PAINT and print-out at the desired size; to actually create them at 10mm size is impressive.
Really superb =D>
What's next...? :)
Great work and Congratulations on finishing a project (I never seem to). =D> =D>
On to Yorktown?
Those look absolutely terrific ! :-bd
Cheers - Phil. :)
