Sad to start this off but

I was at a work colleagues funeral yesterday. He was one of the unsung pioneers who made 'email' actually work.

I had a works client who refused to use email. All her correspondence was done by typed letters (kept a secretary quite busy) and any communications that could not be done face-to-face was done by telephone.

She was ex-Army and the school breathed a sigh of relief (so did the secretary) when she finally retired. She took up flying helicopters as a hobby thereafter.

Still a shame, though. :(

Remember the optimism of moon bases and space stations and pushing on to Mars?

Somebody better get the finger out and invent warp drive pretty damned soon.

A very 'strange' day, because of having such mixed feelings about her death, which I hope everyone can understand, from what I put in the original post.

Thanks, again - Phil

As one who truly loves Mr. Richard Adams "Watership Down", having made two trips across the pond just to see the places of the story, and being honored to have had tea with Mr. and Mrs. Adams in their home on the second trip, we are especially saddened to read of John Hurt's passing. He was the voice of Hazel in the 1978 "Watership Down" movie. Not to mention the passing of Mr. Adams.  And last we heard, Sandleford Warren was also going to truly be destroyed to build homes that were not wanted or needed. - equally as sad.

I was a fan of the original Battlestar Galactica in my youth.  Saw him at a convention about 10 years ago and got his autograph [I'm not really an autograph person...].  He was actually pretty friendly and struck up a conversation with me and my buddy.  It was nice to see his career get a little reboot when the new Battlestar series came out.

The British and American forces were involved in really heavy fighting with the Taliban.
The worst of the fighting was in and around the caves of Tora Bora.
The American forces dubbed them, 'The Caves of Death'.
The British forces referred to them as, 'Tora Bora Tomkinson'.

There are Lies, There are Damned Lies and then there are Statistics

As a BSc Hons in Applied Statistics may I put the other case, as expounded by Andrew Lang (Scottish poet, philospher and critic)?  "He uses statistics as a drunken man uses lamp posts—for support rather than illumination."

Though my mother was impressed by my father's ability to quote statistcs until she heard him telling a friend "if you just make it a point something percentage, then it's credible."

This is of course correct 85.2% of the time.

Apparently not - although definitely the first:

Actually, I'm going to modify that to probably not - since Bishop is still moderately functional at the end of Aliens...  :-[

...and - thinking about it far too much - it isn't punk Bill who's heart Arnie rips out in Terminator, so maybe there are no actors who have been killed by all three!  :-

Damn shame all the less, RIP Bill Paxton :(

Definitley not my favourite Bond, but thought he was great (if a little animated for Sir Roger) in "North Sea Hijack" as bad tempered, woman hating, tapestry-doing, cat loving, marine commando ffoukes. Also "Wild Geese", and  "The Sea Wolves".

Just read that Vin Garbutt a folk singer from Middlesbrough has died. Whilst his style may not have been to everyone's liking, I enjoyed his shows a lot. I was lucky enough to meet and drink with him on several occasions in the Knight's social club in Middlesbrough, often after Boro matches. He was a very down to earth man, who loved people and making music, as well as encouraging others to play too. Usually he had his guitar with him and we would often get an impromptu mini concert.

A sad loss to the music scene.  :(

Just heard that a friend, and one of the regular RPG players from my time in London, died suddenly at the weekend. He was only in his 40's, still quite young.  Being out here in NZ, suddenly each one of the miles separating my from that group of friends seems to be multiplied by ten.

I am pleased that we met up again in April and May for a few games of Traveller when I was in London, which as usual descended into madness with hair-brained schemes a plenty. So that my last memory is his smiling face, masking some dastardly plot  :)

I will miss Fraser, as he was one of the genuine nice guys

Cheers, I'll have a beer for you tonight friend.

George young died yesterday aged 70

Big brother of the young brothers of ac/dc fame.

In the 60s he formed the easybeats who had a big hit with friday on my mind.

Helped his brothers form ac/dc and produce all their first 5 albums (the best ones in my opinion) with his easybeats mate harry vanda.

Rip george.

John Mollo RIP.

The author of numerous books on military uniforms. According to The Times on 28th Oct, Mr. Mollo died 'from the effects of vascular dementia on October 25th 2017, aged 86.' Mr. Mollo won an Oscar for costume design for the first Star Wars film. His first involvement with films was as an adviser on Tony Richardson's Charge of the Light Brigade, no wonder the uniforms looked so right.

I'm sure she'll get 'rendered' and used for 'something'. (Maybe the dogs will find her in a tin of dog-food.)

Weird......I'm not a vegetarian.....But I could NOT (knowingly) eat any of the sheep we've had to have 'put down' over the years.
It would sort of feel like cannibalism.  X_X

I really love roast lamb, though. (Hypocrite ? Moi ?)

While I don't EAT them, the frequency of death amongst my tropical fish similarly stopped me naming them. It's one thing to watch a handful of fish die, it's another to watch Rene, Yvette, Maria and Fifi die...  :(
