Title: Salute, London - Sat 22nd April
Post by: Leon on 03 January 2017, 09:29:12 PM
It's the big one!  With 6000 visitors and 170 traders, this is by far the biggest wargames event in the UK and certainly one to get to if you can!

All of the info on the show can be found on the Warlords website: http://www.salute.co.uk/salute/salute-2017/ and we'll need your pre-orders sending through to us by Sat 15th please.  Don't leave it too late with this one, as we'll be run off our feet in the run up to the day.

Train. You remember? When you helped that nice Mr Stephenson with his "Rocket". If I recall, you were the one who surveyed for the first ever railway line: Stockton to Leeds. But of course, you turned left instead of right.

Then there was the time that you were working as the railway speed control operative in Russia, leading that train, warning all and sundry it was coming by waving that big red flag. That was about 1917 wasn't it?

Then you were the driver of the Flying Scotsman, made the trip from St Pancras to Launceston in no time flat. Surprised everybody who was expecting to go to Edinbugh.

As for "cheap train tickets", they're mythical, like dragonmen, centaurs and Aztecs.

Thought that cheap train tickets existed like jam - yesterday and tomorrow !!

Phil has a problem with the concept of trains - they don't exist in his bit of Wales.

There's 'a station' in the local village.....about a mile and a half away......

But I don't think it's been open since Dr Beeching made his cuts......Blimey  :o....that's over 50 years ago, isn't it ?

Think the nearest station to me now is just over 10 miles away.

The East Coast Main Line (Virgin) sometimes have cheap tickets if you buy then about 12 weeks in advance. Last years Salute I managed to get tickets from Darlington to London Kings Cross and back for £16.50 each way.  :D :D :D :D

A Senior Railcard and the option to upgrade to First Class for a couple of quid each way made my recent rail trip very affordable.

I find myself wondering if I could do Salute this year by getting a train at silly o'clock, arriving in London in time for the start of the show and leaving in the evening ... and then probably sleeping through the next day :)

As they say you don't appreciate something till it's not there. I have to say I have no dreams of London's transport system, but fortunately not too many nightmares about it these days   ;)

No Luddite it was on a proper seat. A couple of years ago my Mrs and I went to London using our 2 together railcard and got tickets for £11 each, each way. A lady joined the train at York having bought a return ticket on the day and it was £165 X_X X_X
There is something to be said for booking in advance  ;D ;D ;D

It does feel like I am being paid to be on holiday :-)
That said the Far North district is one of the more economically depressed areas of NZ, unemployment 10% double that for maori, and much lower wages than NZ average.

Good to put a face to a name though Aksu.  Who is the other bloke?   :)

Always love reading the various reports on these shows and many thanks go to those who take the time to post many photos of games and the day in general.

I see that there was a game of Inverlochy put on by one of the 28mm manufacturers:

Love the looks on the faces of the Covenant player and the two bystanders - "your going to do what???" or "do you really want to do that?" :)

The blogger included a copy of BKC III in his purchases too I see.

Love to get there myself one year, but can't see that happening soon  :(

@Asku: Thanks for the picture of you and Leon - my mental images are always different - I was within range for you but way off for Leon. I have pictured him more like the late Andy Rooney. I am thinking about a head swap.

@Pierre: I didn't make it either and likely won't until I can drive there. Thanks for the link to the Inverlochy picture!

I hope that was a very successful show for our forum hosts. This -selfishly - so you will continue to be around to produce Aztecs and other Meso-Americans, woodland Indians with bows and warclubs (yes you do have ONE figure), Spanish conquestidore types (yes - there are some proxies), LoA Scots regular foot in bonnets, some AFV even fsn has never seen before ..... etc, etc  :)

Hullo,
Enjoyed the show, got a good hoard of goodies including BKC from Leon et al. Quite a good number of 18th century games were in evidence, which was nice. And I even had a gold ticket in my gift bag so got a free figure toting bacback for all the loot I got. So, good fun and don't tell the missus how much essential wargaming gear I bought.
And BTW in the photo the muppet in the left hand corner is me, the handsome young chap on the right is Leon.
Cheers,
Aksu

Not trying to obtuse but I tend to think in terms of stage left - right, or flanks relative to the front facing. If I understand, you are the gentlemen in the glasses, Leon is the cherub-like person?

Well... since actually both of us wear glasses... the gentleman wearing the blue shirt (pendraken corporate wear perchance?) is indeed young master Leon.

And this is why you never see pictures of me online, face for radio is exactly the phrase!  Good to meet up with Aksu and everyone else who came by the stand during the day, it was our most successful Salute ever by quite some margin, helped in no small part by the BKC-III launch.  We'd brought 100 copies along, plus another 40+ in pre-orders and we were getting a bit worried as the day progressed that we'd underestimated the demand somewhat!  Luckily we just got through with a handful left at closing time.

Thanks must also go to the guys from Grenzer Games who put on a fantastic ACW display game for us.  There'll be some more pics online soon, but here's our quick shots from the day:

The game looked wonderful as I took the opportunity to have a peak before the doors opened. Great to hear that you had such a good day Leon. Our table was right by the door and there was a steady stream of visitors well into the afternoon, which obviously boded well for the traders. The show felt more open this year, which is no bad thing and the organisers did reduce the space for trade stands. Still missed loads of stuff as I only had about 30 - 45 minutes to try and take it all in.
