Title: Battleground 2016!
Post by: Leon on 25 August 2016, 12:16:26 AM
(https://static.wixstatic.com/media/5e7f9e_b4b69159c19646d38fec7a2e6363f856.jpg/v1/fill/w_908,h_207,al_c,q_80,usm_0.66_1.00_0.01/5e7f9e_b4b69159c19646d38fec7a2e6363f856.jpg)

It's getting close to that time of year again, as Battleground 2016 takes place on Saturday November 26th, at the Queen's Campus Sports Hall in Stockton-on-Tees, TS17 6BH, running from 10am until 3pm.

This show is organised and run by Pendraken Miniatures with help from Middlesbrough Gamers Club.

Entry to the show is only £3 for adults, with free entry for the rest of the family.

Currently we're looking to have 37 traders attending, but there may be one or two changes to last year's lineup.  We'll have all of the traders confirmed by October and we'll update at that point.  A current list of the expected traders can be found here: http://www.battlegroundshow.co.uk/#!traders/c24i2 (http://www.battlegroundshow.co.uk/#!traders/c24i2)

This year we're expanding the games section of the show, as well as increasing the number of participation games on offer.  We're waiting on the final details of some of our games, so we'll keep updating the lists here: http://www.battlegroundshow.co.uk/#!games/c19qp (http://www.battlegroundshow.co.uk/#!games/c19qp)

We've always enjoyed having living history groups at our event, with the Durham Pals and 68th DLI returning for 2016.  We've also added the Lonestar re-enactment group to this year's event, bringing a selection of 8th Cavalry equipment for people to look at and try on.

Last year's Tabletop Sale was a great success and was fully booked up all day long.  For only £1 per half hour slot, you can sell as much as you like, with no commission at all!  You can deal directly with the buyers, answer any questions they may have, and also keep an eye on your goods. Once your time is up (or better still, you've sold everything!), you can walk away, cash in hand, and enjoy the rest of the show!  This year we'll try and add a couple more tables, but please make sure to book in early if you can.  Bookings can be made through the contact section of the website: http://www.battlegroundshow.co.uk/#!contact/cn3p (http://www.battlegroundshow.co.uk/#!contact/cn3p)

As well as the main Battleground website here: http://www.battlegroundshow.co.uk/ (http://www.battlegroundshow.co.uk/) you can also follow our Facebook page for the latest updates: https://www.facebook.com/BattlegroundShow?ref=hl (https://www.facebook.com/BattlegroundShow?ref=hl)

Don't forget to tell your friends about the event and we hope to see you there!

Definitely going. My favourite show of the year, if I'm honest. Not too big, nor too small. Good venue with good facilities. Good selection of games and traders. Also it doesn't hurt your feet to walk around the place as the floor is wooden and it being all in one place there's no trekking around to find things. The organisers are easy to find and willing to help you out, should you need them, too.

I turn left 99% of the time when I leave the house.

The right turn is a really horrid wiggly-windy' road which I avoid, as much as possible.
Only go that way, to meet the library van, once a month.  :D

Looks a good selection of games.
Though I'm now dreading being roped into playing in a few, since I know people running them. Totally ruins my miserable sod image  [-(

I'm going to be a normal show-goer this time, so I s'pose I'll have to pay this year to get in  :'(

I turn left 100% of the time when I leave the house, otherwise I fall over the fence into next door.

Having been sent round some very tiny wriggle roads down your end Techno, I can sympathise! The sat-nav had a habit of deciding we wanted to see "scenic" routes and sending us either along coastal routes you couldn't get a moped down, or through the firing range at awkward times of the day ;)

Nice views and cool rally driving mind ;)
Title: Re: Battleground 2016!
Post by: Techno on 21 September 2016, 10:43:02 AM
When Meirion popped over to see me.....I sent him 'non sat-nav' instructions how to get to Techno Towers.
From where he was staying, it's a fairly straightforward drive......As long as you don't take the 'short cuts' the sat-nav will give you.

Those are OK(ish) if you know the area.....But if not..... ;D ;D ;D ;D (I certainly don't use the short cuts.....They take longer, anyway.)

Rallying ?.......We get one of those past us, every year, early morning, late in Autumn (They always warn us though.)

It's surprised me that there's never been a bad accident. Though they very occasionally take a lump out of the stone walls that border the roads.

Cheers - Phil

It was more ME rallying than other drivers, all felt a bit like I'd stepped into a very realistic and awkward driving sim :D

After the first years visit you get to know which is the bad route and avoid them ;)

There's a Premier Inn only a mile away, where a lot of the traders stay: http://www.premierinn.com/gb/en/hotels/england/county-durham/stockton-on-tees/stockton-on-teesmiddlesbrough.html?cid=GLBC_MIDTAL  The prices are usually quite reasonable, around £30-£35 per night.  There's a restaurant next door to it, or there's a whole variety of restaurants just over the A66 in Teesside Park.

:-\ Just been watching a video-thingy from Crisis 2014 (fair enough, a few years too late, but first time I'd seen it!) and just wondered about strapping a camcorder to Leon, setting to record, and as he's walking around the show - checking everything's okay - there'd be a video of the show to show-off later.

I won't suggest the official show photographer do the video, as she's busy all day as it is, and its always a case of Leon never looking very busy on the day  :d ;D

;)

Let me in early and I'll photograph everything and everyone, throughout the day! I can even provide my own camera - though you'd need to provide any lights, if wanted?

Quite happy to forego playing games, and my camera is capable of taking well-lit and good images, with a good ability to photograph 'macro' close-ups. Pictures could be emailed, or transferred via USB connection to computer at your unit after the date.

So if you do require a hand, with camera duties, I'm very willing to offer my services.

I think we'll be OK but I'll give you a shout if I find we're short.  Once the doors open at 10am, I should be able to grab 45 minutes or so to have a run around the games.  If you'll be taking pictures anyway, we can always point people towards your blog after the show, more photos is never a bad thing!

We've got a great group of re-enactment groups attending Battleground this year, including:

Durham Pals
The Durham Pals are a group that portray the 18th Battalion Durham Light Infantry in the Great War.  Their primary aim is to commemorate the current 100th anniversaries of World War One.  They are involved with events at locations like Beamish Open Air Museum, giving talks regarding various aspects of the War and also participating in commemorative events.  The group is locally based but has membership across the country.
More information can be found at their website www.durhampals.org.uk

Lonestar Group
An 1876 era 8th Cavalry display group featuring original items from the period.  People can handle original weapons and try on some of the kit, whilst learning about left with the US cavalry during the era.  We talk about the Battle of Little Big Horn and the wider 1876 campaign.  For 2016 we have added a full US Cavalry saddle, complete with tack, equipment and personal kit.
More info about what we do can be found on our website: http://thelonestar.yolasite.com/

Vanguard
Led and founded by William Mckenzie, a seasoned re-enactor, the group 'Vanguard' are a North-Eastern based medieval battle re-enactment group, operating out of Hartlepool but enjoying battle events throughout the UK.  The group re-enacts the battles and combat of the medieval period, primarily taking up the arms and armour of 13th century England. However, with the group meeting and practicing every week – and due to the style of medieval weapons and armour – the group is physically equipped to adapt and enjoy participating in battle events set from early 11th century to mid-14th century.

We've finalised the games for the show now, with the following all booked in for the event:

PARTICIPATION

Ah, quite the few games I want to play. Might have to make a list to remind myself  :-\

Quote from: LeonWargames in the Dungeon
Find the Halfling: Lord of the Rings game using Dragon Rampant rules.  Based on the Battle of Amon Hen.
Priority Level 1. My mate Matt's game. Play this first, as it only take 30mins.

Quote from: LeonRedcar Ironbeards
Capture the Port - WW2 game using Rapid Fire rules.  The Americans are deployed in a layered defence setup with the objective of stopping the opposition breaking through the defences and capturing the bridge linking the town to the port facility.
Priority Level 2. Didn't know you were doing a participation game Skywalker. I'll pop over and throw some dice with you gents for a time.

Quote from: LeonGuisborough Gamers
Sands of the Sudan - A good dusting in the Sudan, can you relieve the garrison in time?
Priority Level 3. Dave Doc' has my name down already for a playing spot, but I played this at Shildon last month so am willing to let others play at this show. Recommended Game!

Quote from: LeonWesterhope Wargames Group
A WW2 participation game as a US carrier tries to survivie a Japanese air attack!
Priority Level 4. I was meant to play Bill's and Co. game at the earlier Stockton show, but with our van being scrapped I never got. Best make the effort to play it this time.

Quote from: LeonConsett Tabletop Gamers Society
Chase the Exec-Wing: A fast paced multi-player game based on Fantasy Flight's popular X-Wing, where a squadron of Ties is tasked with hunting down a single X-Wing flown by one of our team.
Priority Level 5. Fancy mucking about with some spaceships, and it should be a quick game.

Quote from: LeonSociety of 20th C. Wargamers
Rif War 1921 - Visitors take on the role of a Spanish Colonial officer tasked with completing randomly chosen missions in the Rif mountains.  Played in a Pony Wars style against a randomly generated enemy, suitable for multiple players.
Priority Level 6. If I've the time, this game sounds interesting.

Quote from: LeonDISPLAY

Old Guard Wargames Club
A 28mm Roman Civil War game, using 'To The Strongest' rules.
My assistance isn't required, as far as I know. John and Pete are running the game on the day.

Quote from: LeonStafford and District Wargames
A 10mm Marlburian game using Pendraken figures!
Looking forward to seeing those Tricornes!

I'd best print all this out to remind myself  ;D

Shopping list:
KR Multicase order to pick up.
Vallejo paints from Pendraken - to replace ageing Foundry 'Flesh-colour' paints.
Paintbrushes from Warlord Games

We're only a week away from Battleground 2016 now, so for anyone unsure of where the venue is, here's the directions!

By Road:
Coming down from the North on the A19 (Sunderland, Newcastle, Scotland, etc.) - http://www.pendraken.co.uk/FileBin/BattlegroundDirectionsNorth.pdf (http://www.pendraken.co.uk/FileBin/BattlegroundDirectionsNorth.pdf)
Coming from the East on the A66 (Middlesbrough town, Whitby, Scarborough, etc.) - http://www.pendraken.co.uk/FileBin/BattlegroundDirectionsEast.pdf (http://www.pendraken.co.uk/FileBin/BattlegroundDirectionsEast.pdf)
Coming up from the South on the A19 (York, Harrogate, Leeds, Sheffield, etc.) - http://www.pendraken.co.uk/FileBin/BattlegroundDirectionsSouth.pdf (http://www.pendraken.co.uk/FileBin/BattlegroundDirectionsSouth.pdf)
Coming over from the West on the A66 (Darlington, Cumbria, etc.) - http://www.pendraken.co.uk/FileBin/BattlegroundDirectionsWest.pdf (http://www.pendraken.co.uk/FileBin/BattlegroundDirectionsWest.pdf)

By Bus:

Regular services run from Stockton and Middlesbrough to Teesdale and X1 services from Newcastle, Durham, Sedgefield and Middlesbrough stop outside the Holliday Building on University Boulevard.  There are several bus stops on the campus, the closest ones for Battleground being either the Holliday Building stop, or outside the Stockton Riverside College.

By Train:
East Coast Main Line operate high speed services from London, York and Edinburgh to Darlington, with a connection to Thornaby Railway Station.

The Transpennine Express provides a direct approximately hourly service from Manchester Airport, Manchester, Leeds and York to Thornaby.

Northern Rail operate a regular service from Saltburn to Newcastle and Bishop Aukland that stops at Thornaby and Durham.

Once you arrive at Thornaby Station, climb the steps and turn right onto the footbridge.  Walk over the footbridge and turn right along Station Street.  At the roundabout go straight over onto Harvard Avenue, signposted 'University Campus', with the glass fronted buildings on your right.  Continue down this road, past the entrance to Stockton Riverside College, until you reach another roundabout.  Turn right here, signposted 'University of Durham'.  As you reach another roundabout, the venue will be to your right, a white and grey building with the curved sports hall roof visible and 'Durham University Sports' written on the side.

If there are any queries at all on getting there, just get in touch and we'll point you in the right direction!
