Title: Olympics 2016.
Post by: Techno on 23 July 2016, 07:16:22 AM
Have the Russians been totally 'kicked out' of this years Olympics ?

Does this mean the Russian shot put champion, Anna Bollik-Steroyd, will be unable to compete ? (Sorry....I think I've nicked that one from an edition of Private Eye from decades ago.)

Cheers - Phil  :D

The shot putter was Nadzeya Ostapchuk, a Belarusian.

A VERY touchy subject in NZ

Has anyone been watching the Olympics on TV (aka the 'Lympics' - England - and the 'Alympics' - Scotland)? As a Brit, I'm obviously very proud of our record so far (2nd in the Medal Table). This I'm sure is not down to dedication, skill, determination and improved coaching etc. alone, but also better funding from such sources as the National Lottery (and possibly because one or two other nations - no names mentioned but one begins with the letter "R" - are no longer able to get away with cheating so easily now  :P).

However, with all of this physical prowess on display from our fellow Brits, we, as wargamers, with our sedentary pursuits might be feeling a tad guilty with regard to leading a lifestyle that may not be considered the most healthy.  Well, worry not my fellow British table top warriors. We are not as different from our medal winning athletes as you may think.

Because if you look at our medalists, you will see that 25 of our 56 medals (so far) were won by folks who also sit on their backsides! *   :-[

* Cycling, equestrian (or dancing horses, as Mrs W. calls it), rowing, sailing and canoeing.

P.S. In keeping with my athletic nature, I am about to have a Cornish clotted cream and jam scone. What's the best way to have this? Should I spread the jam on first with the cream on top or spread the clotted cream on first with the jam on top?  :-\

I would be more interested in the nationality of the medal winners of Team GB&NI.

Anyone got one?

In team sports everyone in the team gets a medal.

Yes, I know that, I have some 'team' medals of my own, just not at Olympic level.

If 99 is the total of all the team medals, then teams like Rugby 7s and Rowing 8s doesn't quite compute.

They refer to all the competitors as "Athletes"

I do Clay Pigeon shooting , and Rifle shooting, so under Olympic rules I am already an Athlete.  :)

I told Mrs Orcs this and for some reason she sort of snorted  :-\  I hope she is not getting a cold

Jam first

Shooting is a sport.
Any time you have to hold your breath and then pucker everything else,  it is a sport.

I suppose it is rather confusing - for example, 12 medals were dished out for the Rugby 7s team  :o (2 of which were Scots) and it appears, 9 for the Rowing 8s  :-\ (there's the cox as well, apparently). Is it your impression that it doesn't quite compute or have you calculated it to be different?

By that definition, getting into last year's summer trousers (pants) is a sport, as is dropping your mobile phone/favourite wargames unit/baby onto a hard floor, opening your bank statement and constipation.  :D

I think I'd be disqualified from the last 'sport', through drug abuse....Co-Codomol gives you a massive advantage. (TMI  :P)

Don't know if you've seen this, Jim. There's a final breakdown in the following link.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/olympics/37132833 (http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/olympics/37132833)

p.s. Whilst reading the various reports on the BBC website, I watched a video of the Brownlee brothers being interviewed (for those who don't know, between them they won 2 golds, 1 silver and 1 bronze in the 2012 and 2016 Olympic Triathlons). One of them, Jon, mentioned that when they were in school, they were once asked, "Where did you meet each other?"!   ;D

Didn't watch so thought you were jesting - but saw video - amazing.
Perhaps Nintendo is a major sponsor of the 2020 olympics in Tokyo?
Maybe the PM is into cosplay - in which case - glad his not into Hentai porn :)

Tokyo Olympics in 4 years time may use themes from their history and culture as London did for there's.

The conceit of having someone dressed as Mario pop into a green tube in Tokyo and Shinzo Abe appear as Mario from a green tube in Rio echoes the Queen's "paradrop" into the London opening ceremony.

There are already those campaigning for Studio Ghibli to design the opening ceremony and for Pokemon Go to be added as an event. One a more serious suggestion than the other I suspect :)
