Title: Euro 2016
Post by: Westmarcher on 12 June 2016, 08:58:42 AM
Good start, Wales! Well done against a team rated better than you - but it's only one game - don't get too carried away.

Well played, England - but what was that at the end? Should have won it.

Next up is Northern Ireland. Good luck to all 3 Home Nations.  m/

[As for the Neanderthal England fans - time to grow up! OK, whilst it appears Russian fans started it all off again at the game end, this thuggery and hooliganism has been going on over the last few days. You are a disgrace to all decent England fans and the rest of the UK].

Doubtless Ian will be miffed at Wales' current position in the Euro footie.

:( Oh dear, the small of minority of In-ger-lund fans who spoilt it for everyone seem to have overshadowed everything else.

I noted, that during the half-time commentary section of the Wales match, it was mentioned that the Welsh and French fans had been coexisting peacefully the night before at the fan's zone and had celebrated France's win together. Nice one the Welsh  =D>

Football-wise. I had Slovakia to win, so was very happy for the Welsh victory. I reckoned Russia would draw or win, so was really behind England and willing them on till that stupid flare and explosion went off in the Russian fan's section of the crowd  :(

I am in Marseille.
It is mainly our neanderthals from our Club (Olympique de Marseille) who started most of the incidents with the foreigners ( English and Russians)
But media prefer to blame the foreigners, so that social peace is kept in France.

That is a shame to hear, although I think there are a minority of England fans who are looking for an excuse to cause trouble.  Hopefully the various security forces can sort it out and get rid of the troublemakers.

One thing I was very disappointed to see was the firework/banger being let off by the Russian fans.  With the recent tragedy in Paris and the constant terror threat, I thought this was extremely stupid and unnecessary.

History Legend repeats itself and St.George beats the Dragon once again! 'Fox in the Box' should have been on from the start IMO and Sturridge's late goal made up for the late goal lost in the previous game. Don't lose heart Wales - if Slovakia can beat Russia, you've still got a chance of getting a result in the next game.

Away now to practise my Northern Ireland accent ......  :-SS

I watched the England Wales game in a pub in Cowbridge, between Cardiff and Bridgend.

99.9999999% of the pub cheered loudly when Bale scored.

I went "yep" when Vardy and Sturridge scored

Many years ago I was in a Dublin pub and there was live footie on the telly.

Some guy called Beckham scored a wonder goal against Portugal (I think) to qualify for a major championship. Not a soul looked up when it happened.

I was in Belfast yesterday, cracking place and the Guiness is the dogs. The Irish played the Ukes off the field and thoroughly deserved the win. In the earlier confrontation, Wales, when defending, were really good and Ashley Williams led by example. Overall I was thinking that Bale was a bit hit or miss...and then the  bu**er scored. Hart should have got there but that's football. Both sets of fans were fantastic and the signing of the anthems at the beginning was so brilliant for both teams that I had goose pimples all over my arms.

Tonight -Poland v Germany- is a bit of a problem for me as I like the Poles because my mate's wife is Polish but my distant relatives from the past came from Saxony so Germany is high up there as well. What a quandary.

Hmm  :-\

So England vs Wales should have been a happy event for me, as no matter who won I would be happy [Yes, I've mixed ancestry].

Only problem I found was that I was willing on Wales to score a second come the eighty-odd minute, and then when England did I was entirely ambivalent.

It was a cracking atmosphere though, it seemed, and brilliant to listen to the fans trying to out-sing each other.

I was in Belfast last Wednesday. The belsonic stage is quite impressive and I bet the place was rocking at the final whistle. Some colleagues of mine are part of the press contingent for pics and reviews for some of the bands there later.

Quite liked the place and loved the Guiness; people in the know say Guiness doesn't travel and now I totally agree with them.

Just back from a short holiday in Madrid (Spain). On Monday, Mrs W. went shopping with daughter No.2 (she was at a Conference there) so, like all good wargamers, I devised a cunning plan and headed for the the Naval Museum. Which was closed. Apparently. Cerrado (Spanish for shut).  :'(

However, said cunning plan also included a trip to the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium where I spent a great couple of hours. Absolutely brilliant! I sat in the terracing. I went to the Trophy Room (actually a very, very, very long Hall packed with silverware), the other Trophy Room (the one with all of the Golden Boot awards, etc.) and the other, other Trophy Room (the one with the European Cups). I sat in the luxurious seats of the Presidential Box and the dug-out. I paced the technical area and wandered around both dressing rooms where things took a peculiar turn when I started to run a bath ..... but I won't go into that .....  :-[

Anyhoo. Whilst we had great digs in Madrid, the room's TV was not so good and so slight downside was that I was unable to keep up with the footie. So, catching uo tonight, I am delighted to see that all 3 Home Nations have qualified for the last 16. Wow! Brilliant! 3 out of 16 teams come from the UK! Well done and good luck in the next round!   =D> :-bd

Signed - one slightly jealous (but still happy) Scotsman.  ;)

As a) one who identifes with the more northern parts of these fair isles and b) one who cares not a jot or tittle for the game of (as I have learned to call it) kissball and c) one who loves the enthusiasm of the underdog, may I just say:

Come on Iceland!

I fully realise that by casting my ballot in their favour I have condemned them to vainglorious defeat, but I'd love to hear the Icelandic TV reporter if they do win. I think paramedics should stand by the commentary box.

I'm English. I, somewhat, support the England team ... The high-point of my enthusiasm peaked at the WC 2002 and has suffered mid-level highs and a lot of ambivalent lows since then.

I wouldn't normally wish another team to beat us (though am not surprised when they do) but, I've got to say I would find it immeasurably funny if Iceland won. So. Come on Iceland!

And Wales!

Though, good luck to the Northern Irish. I hope you really put on a show in the match.

Speaking of minnows it reminds me a bit of when I was working in Edinburgh in 1993 and went to the local watering hole to watch England play San Marino in a World Cup qualifying game.

The English had to win by 8 clear goals but San Marino scored within 30 seconds of the game starting, much to the delight of the majority of the viewers  :o :-[

Try as they might the English could only score 7 goals so missed going to the 1994 World Cup  :(

Following England I always tend to think they will go out in the group stages so I never get disappointed when they do, it's only when they overachieve that I get worried about when they will peak and usually it's the game before the really important one. But I remember '66 so it's not all bad, just history.

The garbage press will have us putting 3 or 4 past Iceland as a matter of jingoistic pride but it's just not that easy anymore. nowadays, even the real minnows of any tournament have something to offer.

I ended up in a bar inSan Francisco in 96 to watch the Germany/England game.
1) I was the only England fan apart from the barman.
2) It was an Irishbar. Not a theme bar but honest to gods Irish Catholic IRA supporters bar.
3) They were supporting Germany.
4) It's been many years since I've been that drunk!
Bless the barman, he poured me a half 'on the house, because we know what's gonna happen' when the penalties started!!!

Perhaps we will now realise that all the foreign players in English teams are ruining the opportunities for home grown talent. I remember that someone looked at the premier league (2014 I think) and redid the the final table by eliminating all goals scored by foreign players. The result, Man City would have been bottom. That said it all to me. Congratulations to the Icelandic TEAM, we didn't have one.
Title: Re: Euro 2016
Post by: Subedai on 28 June 2016, 10:42:38 AM
Carrying that idea a little further I also remember reading that only one third of the premiership players were actually English...says it all.

Congratulations to Iceland, they deserved the win because not to put too fine a point on it but England were absolutely woeful. After following England since '66 I cannot remember such a collectively sh*te performance. Shearer put into words what a lot of people had been thinking, myself included, that they went to a major tournament on the back of a successful qualifying campaign without really being tested; the manager said he did not know his best team or his best system and he took players that had hardly any game time -ie Sterling, Henderson and Wilshire instead of players who were in form ie Drinkwater and Townsend.
What really amazed me was that -without taking anything away from Vardy- was that all the European teams latched onto the fact that if you play a deep defence you give him next to no space to run into and use his tremendous pace. I can't think of one Premiership team who played this way, all the defences were high up the pitch. Come to think of it, all our players were nullified by a much better organised and purposeful Icelandic team.

We have had a wake-up call, like Germany did in 2004, it's up to the FA to sort out the problem like they did...or more likely do FA about it.

As the result was 2 - 1 then thats 67% to 33%. So no basis for a replay!

I think that a rematch would only be an option if the result had been 13 - 12 (say after two rounds of penalties).

I'm not sure its the premier league having overseas players in that is the problem. As UK players can (and do) go and play overseas. Its more that the Premier League has so much money involved that it thinks its the best thing ever. Premier league teams haven't done that well in Europe recently. It also seems that while football is very harsh on upcoming players, it is remarkably tolerant of poor performances from 'stars' who often get to play on much longer than they really should.
Last night also showed that the England players had no idea what to do when things went against them - compare this to Rugby teams who at least work at getting the team doing the right things when things go wrong.

I remember seeing an interview with a continental coach who found it strange that the first thing we teach English kids is how to get rid of the ball (pass it) rather than keep hold of it and become comfortable in possession.  These South American youngsters playing street football are spending hours with a ball at their feet, running about and learning to control it at all times.  English players always look nervy when in possession and can't cope with being pressured, which was evident last night.  There were several times when we lost possession and the Icelanders were able to calmly collect the ball and play out from the back.

... he took players that had hardly any game time -ie Sterling, Henderson and Wilshire instead of players who were in form ie Drinkwater and Townsend.

I was surprised at that as well, at least Townsend had played regularly and hit some form (albeit in a relegated team).

What really amazed me was that -without taking anything away from Vardy- was that all the European teams latched onto the fact that if you play a deep defence you give him next to no space to run into and use his tremendous pace. I can't think of one Premiership team who played this way, all the defences were high up the pitch.

I think the difference there was the type of opponent and our style of play.  For Leicester, they relied on the counter attack, sitting back and conceding possession to draw the opponent up the field.  If the opposition tried to attack and leave a back 4 deep, it left massive gaps all across the pitch for Leicester to exploit.  In the Euro's we've faced defensive opponents that have barely left their own half in some games (especially Slovakia).

Agreed, but isn't the Premiership supposed to be the best league in the world? If so what are the criteria to qualify for that statement? Only being able to play a certain style and damn any other as the work of the devil? You would have thought the better footballing minds of Premiership management would have worked it out before they got around to playing Leicester, wouldn't you?

Maybe tomorrows England footballers need to play on Bream Sands beach for a few years like the Brazilian kids do on the Coca Cabana. if you can play on sand, you can play anywhere.  :)

Anyone got any ideas for the next boss? Shame about Cloughie going when he did, he would have made a great England manager but the FA don't like people who speak their minds and tread on a few toes in the process...so we will probably get nice Mr Southgate.

I would have said most exciting league rather than best league in terms of quality
Title: Re: Euro 2016

It's probably the best league in terms of average ability of the 20 teams in it, as well as excitement as Fenton says.  There aren't many leagues in the world where half a dozen teams have got a realistic chance of competing for the title.

Spain and Germany have got much better quality in their top teams, but there's only 2 or 3 of those teams per league.  The quality level drops off rapidly after that though.

I think the sensible money is on Southgate, but he wouldn't be my choice.  He's done a great job with the Under 21's, but the main squad has got a lot of egos that he'd struggle to manage.  He could only do it with an English version of Roy Keane alongside him to do the discipline side of things, like Nigel Pearson for example.  I think he could do with more experience as well, as he didn't have a great time up here at Middlesbrough before working for the FA.

Other options:
Eddie Howe - Not enough experience for me, especially with big egos again.
Alan Pardew - A possibility, some people hate him but he's got results with most of his teams.  He isn't afraid to tackle 'problem' players either.
Sam Allardyce - Just not quite my cup of tea.
Gary Neville - Needs to recover from his time at Valencia before going into such a high profile job.  I would have him back in the management team though.
Alan Shearer - Not for me, seems to be his own greatest fan.  He did awful with Newcastle in his only management job.
Glenn Hoddle - My pick for the job.  I know he's been out of favour since some stupid comments a long time ago, but he knows the game, is a solid coach, and brings a level of experience at a world level that a lot of the other candidates don't.

I didn't think he transitioned well from player to manager and I've seen ex-players talk about how he struggled to make that switch.  The squad was probably good enough to stay in the Premier League but I'm not sure he was able to motivate them properly.  Then selling Tuncay and Huth when we went down meant we were always going to struggle to get back up.

As an interesting bit of trivia, we had Nemanja Matic on trial that season but didn't sign him, and we also had a deal in place for Chris Smalling before he chose Fulham instead...  :'(

On the plus side, anyone now mentioning the men's round-ball-kicky-fally-over-cry-cry game team (especially 1966)  can now be countered with:
