Post by: Leon on 27 May 2015, 01:07:48 AM
Colours is back as a 1-day show this year, so we're really looking forward to seeing how it goes.  It's being held on the 12th September at Newbury Racecourse, and more info can be found here: http://nrwc.org.uk/colours

We'll need your pre-orders in before Saturday 5th September please!

I imagine it will be rather busy and somewhat hectic, being only a one-day show. Does anyone know if they still running the competition games? Still awaiting news on our demo game but will be on the Bruce Weigle games for some of the day no matter what. Looking forward to it as it is my favourite show.

We've not had any more information on it yet, just the initial booking form that we sent off late last year.  I'm hoping to see some advertising/promo for it soon, as it's only a little over 3 months away.

Well full details of demo games and traders are finally up on their website:

http://www.nrwc.org.uk/colours (http://www.nrwc.org.uk/colours)

Maybe it's just me but there seems to be less demo games this year compared to previous ones. For anyone attending I will be helping out on the Double Six Gamers table as well as the Grand Tactical Games one. Craig (Tiny Terrain) has done a sterling job on the former, which is a modern skirmish game set in a fictional African country. Bruce Weigle's table is sure to be stunning and is 1871 Franco-Prussian War.

So who else is going? I know some forum members are due to help out on Bruce's table, but it's always good to put faces to names at shows. Hope to see some of you there.

There's also a lot less traders this year, the 2013 show had over 90 companies, but only 62 this time around including no Dave Thomas.

This is probably not a bad thing in the short term, as any drop in visitor numbers this year due to the format change won't be felt as badly amongst the traders.  If the visitors turn out and supoprt the show as usual then they can look at increasing the trader numbers again in the future.

A 30% drop in traders is quite large  :o.

Indeed, and I'm not sure what the reason behind it is.  Hopefully the club have cut the numbers due to the year off and the rearranged one-day format, keeping the trader levels lower in case the visitor numbers drop substantially.  There may also be some natural casualties, either companies who are not around anymore, have stopped doing as many shows, or found themselves a replacement show in 2014.  I'd suspect the latter would include Dave Thomas as he does a lot of the continental shows, so he might have found a weekend away in Europe somewhere that brings in comparitive sales in a sunnier climate...!

If shows were more conveniently located, they'd be able to draw in more customers. Why, in Bangkok alone there must be over twenty of us by now!

Mike is a lovely chap. I met him quite by chance at Bruce's table two years ago and we got chatting about the game, as he was explaining things to the 'punters'. It transpired that we lived closed to each other, had daughters of a similar age etc. I ended up helping Bruce pack the game away, having bought his rules as I was so impressed by the whole set up, and then gave Mike a lift back home.

Hullo, I managed to convince the missus it would be a grand idea to visit UK this weekend, thus I will be able to visit the show.
Leon, will you be bringing any of the League of Augsburg figures to the show? I realise I've missed the pre-order deadline and you don't seem to have any ready made army packs for the range which I could just grab. I am rather desperate for something colourful after all the ACW uniformity.
Cheers,

Hi Meirion,
yep, I was looking forward to meeting some of the chaps again :(. Pop by Craig's table and say hello and you may even be able to get a bit of a game in. He's down as Double Six games and should have a big Skirmish Sangin pop up display by the table.

Any pics greatly appreciated. I'd love to have some form of game to compensate for missing the show but have family over so all stashed away out of sight until end of play tomorrow.

Good to see everyone yesterday but a shame Steve couldn't make it along.

The show was really good, the move to a one-day format was a big success as far as we're concerned.  The worry is that all those people who would normally come on the Sunday don't bother at all and you lose all those sales.  That didn't seem to be the case to me, and the visitor numbers didn't seem to be affected at all.  I haven't heard any official door stats yet, but it was manic for the first 3 hours and still busy enough through the rest of the afternoon.  Takings were higher during this year's single day than in the previous incarnation's two days, so all good from this end.

The only negative would be the space available and the size of the tradestands.  We were only allowed 6ft depth in our stand, which is a bit 'old school' and less than any other show on the circuit these days.  That meant we had to really compact everything just to fit in, and the space within the stand was minimal.  As a result we had a couple of displays knocked off shelves by folks squeezing past each other, one of which completely shattered and will need to be replaced.

There needs to be a cloakroom and a blanket ban on rucksacks in the main trading hall. And in some cases, straight jackets to prevent excessive arm waving might be a goo idea too!

Great to hear the day was a success. Even though I wrote a list, i still managed to fail to pick up a couple of things, so an order will be incoming in the not to distant future.

Would definitely return to Colours next year.

As Leon said, it was frantic early on, but far more relaxed and civilized later on.

Due to escorting my daughters around - one of who is currently suffering from severe fiddleitis  :'( - I was a bit preoccupied for most of the day, but somehow managed to be there from pretty much start to finish, which is a first.

I did take some pictures which I'll post once I can get them on Photobucket and work out what they are of!

All-in-all a good day :)
