Title: Warband Tales
Post by: Chieftain on 07 April 2015, 12:57:41 PM
As suggested here (http://www.pendrakenforum.co.uk/index.php/topic,11894.0.html (http://www.pendrakenforum.co.uk/index.php/topic,11894.0.html)) Warband Tales is a thread for those of you interested in charting the rise of your Warband army, from idea, to bare lead, to glorious technicolour, world conquering war host!

List your initial purchases, army lists and post every week or two a few pics of what you painted (or didn't)!

If you feel inclined, let us have your thoughts behind your army and the pictures too, of course.

Show us how Warband is developing on your tabletop.   :)

When I picked up my copy of the Warband rules I had just started rebasing my 10mm Normans to suit ancients rules such as Impetus so I decided to use them as a base for a Dragon Men army. Unfortunately I had based my Normans on 6cm x 3cm bases, smaller than the recommended base size so I made some card rules with a 6cm BW marked out on them. I then got my existing Orc army which was also based on 6cm wide bases and my friends and I had our first game. I have found that using smaller bases has not affected our games at all. So my Norman Knights became Dragon Knights, the spearmen, Men-at-Arms and so on. I already had some giants based suitably but had to use some Anglo Saxon Huscarles as my Command base/Baron. So the photo below shows the start of my specially made Baron's base for my Norman Dragonmen. I have a raised platform of rock with 2 model dragons on it, the figures will be painted up with the baron and his standard on the platform with his guardsmen arranged below, in front. I'll post another picture when it is completed.

For our third game last night one of my friends brought along some 10mm Normans he has started to rebase to suit my basing that he also used as Dragonmen and another friend was actually using his phone to plan a Wood Elf Army for the game. As for me, I now have Dragon Men, Orcs and Goblins and Barbarian Armies almost complete by just adding a few units to what I already had painted (I have just painted up a 15mm Mammoth I found I had in a box and added a balsa wood howdah, looks good with the barbarian crew). So next I plan to do a High Elf army using the Pendraken figures which I bought over Xmas but have yet to paint. This will be my first actually planned Warband army, I will probably stay with my smaller bases so that I can use my Elves against my other forces.

I just received my first purchase. A rare pack of GW Warmaster Dwarves- Anvil of Doom & Throne of Power. I want to use these figures for my General and Spell-crafter so i have unique models that are easily identifiable.

Here is a pic of the models. These are just ones I found, not painted by me. Mine are new/bare. The pack has a dwarf king sitting with throne & base. 4 Guards/Throne bearers, a one piece anvil with Runesmith on top, also with 2 guards. a chained up pet bear, along with 2 other dwarf hero types. One looks like Bugman with a mug, the other I cannot identify.

Hope so. I wanted to get  pretty much all I'd need in one go.  Now just a few weeks to get it.

OK, so i'm slowly working on my first post-release Warband army.  The progress is actually lamentably slow (although i have a hill dwarf and goblin army already done, so i can still play!)

However, the Hill Dwarves of the Red Mountain are beginning to shape up.

Here's the start with the King's unit (already posted elsewhere).

And the second unit completed recently, as well as the banners for the units so far.

I'm going to try to push on with the next units this week.

VERY NICE! The flags are great! I really like shieldwall effect. Is the second unit using mantlets?

Very nice, you are getting a lot of nicely painted figures on each base, so I'm not surprised its taking a while to get the army together.

Fantastic, the figures look great in such numbers and your flags really add to the look. You may convert me to 10x5cm bases yet!

About time I added a few photo's and comments about my own progress. I now have DragonMen, Orcs and Goblins and Barbarian armies so I thought I would start work on my High Elves. Happily for me, this morning my friendly (but very wet) Postie, Pete bought me a little bag filled with Pendraken goodies, extra Optional Units' for some of my existing armies and the extra High Elf archers I was short of.  However I have made a start on the High Elves. This will be very much an elite force with good quality General and Mage units, all the core units will be upgraded with Fierce for the Knights, Powerful for the Archers and Resolute (and possibly Shieldwall) for the Warriors.
First up a photo of the Elf Knights and a unit of Guard Archer with swordsmen on the front row, archers behind.

Next we have the Mage unit with portable/inflatable standing stones with Unicorns in support.

finally so far we have the Ballista and crew with a unit of scouts. The scouts are actually Wood Elf Archers which seem to do the job nicely.

On the painting table at the moment are two units of spearmen/warriors, two units of archers to follow soon. The one unit I am stuck on is the General. Having spotted that the High Elf General has MT 2, making him faster than most it would make sense to have him as a group of mounted figures but I am not too sure about just using more Knights? Any suggestions?

Oh very nice indeed Bodvoc!

I do think the blue/chocolate brown combo works so well.  (I've used it in a couple of my armies)

I have some Army Packs suitable for Warband/Warmaster available for a charity sale.

There are Anglo-Saxons, Normans, Hill Dwarves, Goblins and Norse.

All unpainted, out of packets, bases have been filed smooth.

No MDF bases.

One or two extras.

Anyone interested?

I will be attending Albanich this weekend, also Carronade and Claymore, and a few other shows in the North of England and all over Scotland.

They could be posted, buyer pays postage.

All proceeds will go to SSAFA.
