These have been done by Carlos Briz. The trains and planes aren't ours, but nearly everything else is. I've listed the buildings by code above the pictures.

Are those your buildings? If so, which codes in which pictures?
I've put the codes above the pictures for the building. I think some of the sandbag barricades, and the pup tents are ours as well, but I'll need to check with Dave, cos he casts those bits.
Those are nice dioramas...a little bizarre on the plane/train combo maybe [?] - not something that would naturally spring to my mind, but nicely done! 8)
Good stuff!
I particularly like the 'wet look' on this one, it creates a gritty, sombre aspect; very well done.
Oh, and Leon, aren't there two PS38's in this one?

Yep, I must have missed that one!
Thanks! That's a big help.
Funny how these things work, Leon.
I never considered buying a 'tiled hut' from your collection.
Now that I've seen it painted, I want it.
You sly little bugga you! ;D
Cheers,
Aart
The pup tents are ours as well, code BR117.
;D
I love the one with the plane crashed :)

That boy likes his planes and trains! Lovely stuff. I love looking at dioramas, must get round to doing one myself sometime.
Some more diorama's sent to us by Carlos Briz, this time using our Colonial ranges, including some of the trains in the Boer range. I've listed some of the items for interest.

Hi, that's only one guy, me, and my wife says that I'm building dioramas in mass production
Hi again, I've forgot to say that they were produced in the last 4 years, an average of about 50 per year
It's like a "steam machine". :-bd

They are lovely 8)

I find everything a bit to clean.
And maybe some variations on the format will be a progress ?
(No misunderstanding, I love this stuff, I'm looking to improve the quality)
Yes, you are right.
There's an evolution on Carlos work.
It's a five years work.
During a period of 13 years the Portuguese sustained a war in 4 different operational theaters (Guinea, Angola, Mozambique and India), thousands of miles distant from Portugal, and each from other:

Wow! What can I say? These dioramas set a really high standard. I don't see how you turn out so many. In any case, I study them as painting guides. They are very impressive.
The oil-stained snow (in addition to the tracks) adds a nice touch.

You could use the one in the WWII range, code GR35, it's quite a generic wagon and can be used for late 19th C.
The locomotives are 1/160 (N scale) from Del Prado Collection, all info in: http://digilander.libero.it/sportinglife/index.htm
The wagons are from european manufacturers (Fleischmann, Arnold, Minitrix, Peco, Lima e Piko) a American manufacturers (Microtrains, etc).
Regards
Hi Leon, I was meaning the rolling stock wagons - the GR 35's I am in the process of ordering for they FPW Prussians, I am just witing until you release the Commanders I asked about, so Feb or March and my troops can last more that a few days on campaign.

Ah right. The FPW personalities have been moulded and will be in February's releases.

Cool diorama! And a cute little plane, that Messerschmidt 163!
Another nice one, Carlos! You have a second house just to put all your dioramas in, I suppose?
Sorry to be a bit negative, but is it me or are these getting a bit 'samey'?
They're excellent of course but they all seem to have the same basic layout. :-[
Hi all
Thank's for the comments
The basic idea of the dioramas in to tell us how railways were used in wartime, so the basic layout is a locomtive and a goods wagon or a passenger car and a heli, a plane or a boat with some afv's for the same period, so the "samey" is exactly the same base in different wars and tries to be the more accurate possible.
Best regards to all from Portugal
Carlos, just a quick question, how many of these have you done now?
Hi Leon
Thank's for the question.
Total dioramas are at present still with me are 190 and those sold last year are 20, that gives a total 210 build in the last 6 years, with a special intensity last year, and to those questioned about a second house they are all store and displayed in shelves in my farm house loft.
Best regards from Portugal

yes, yes, yes !!!

I also strongly recommend to read an autobiography of this exceptional man (
On Wings of War: My Life as a Pilot Adventurer), from which one can learn more about serving as RAF fighter pilot (i.e. heavy drinking and picking up English girls), operating private airline in Mediterranean (i.e. smuggling Swiss watches across numerous borders) and serving various African rebelions, namely - Katanga and Biafra.

The Spanish Civil War is one of the usual themes of Carlos's work.
There was a unit of portuguese volunteers that fought on the Nationalist side during this conflict.
It seems there were between 8.000 and 12.000 volunteers envolved, that enroled either in the Spanish Foreign Legion or in the Carlist militias.
This conflict was another proof, in any more was needed, that there is no worst war than a civil war.

Yoiks! Wow! What's the range on that! It was cross channel in WWII (23+ miles), at 1:144 at least, I could play from Leighton Buzzard to Milton Keynes! I could wargame from home, just have the lads call the shots in! :-\
These are some of the best ones I've seen yet, amazing! 8)
How many dio's have been done so far JF?
Hi Leon

Glider - GRAMODELS
Figures and Vehicles- Pendraken
Here you have another glider, this time a flying monster that had a transport capacity of about 7 tons!
This piece of hardware allowed for the deployment of transports, light artillery and light tanks, giving more "punch" to airborne troops.

This new dio represents an airborne assault on a Japanese airfield in Burma, late in the war.

The Horsa was another heavy duty cargo glider used in air assault operations, with the purpose of providing the airborne troops with the supplies and hardware necessary to "hold until relieved!" (whenever that could be...)

This dio is related to the Crimean War (1853-1856), also called the first "modern war", due to the extensive use of the electric telegraph and the use tactical use, for the first time, of railways - just the thing that was sure to awaken CB´s interest.

The last one?! :'(
I have to say, as a body of work, these diorama's are exceptional. The time and effort that has gone into them, the detail in planning on each one. I've said before, if I ever find myself in Portugal, I will be doing everything I can to go and visit Carlos, and see these little marvels for myself.
I do hope though, that CB gets the itch again soon, and maybe a few more appear in the future... ;)

any ACW trains and er..... balloons ?
Beautiful, as always. However, in the bomber diarama there is no way the GWR would have allowed one of their locomotives to get into that state, war or no war. They weren't known as "God's Wonderful Railway" for nothing!

USS Olympia - 1/232 Revell/Encore
Figures - Pendraken
Civil people - Musket Miniatures
Sailors - Rod Langton Miniatures
The USS Olympia was a protected cruiser that saw service in the US Navy from 1895 until 1922, and fought at the battle of Manila Bay (that took place in 1 May 1898), during the Spanish-American War
This ship is still in "active service" nowadays, since it is used as a museum ship (Independence Seaport Museum) in city of Philadelphia (US state of Pennsylvania), although it seems that it needs urgent repairs.

Those are very nice indeed.
Would any of those train models be suitable for ww1 East Africa? If so, would you be so kind as to tell me where you got them from?
Alan
Hello MediumAL
Most of the trains used in these excellent dioramas come from the Del Prado range of 1/160 static models. I don't think any of them are specifically from East Africa but the 2 I'd choose as likely candidates would be:-
Claud Hamilton 2-2-0 - 1900
(http://www.amercom-hobby.com/image/cache/data/Lokomotywy/lokomotywa31a-800x800.gif)
Class C50 - 1929
(http://www.amercom-hobby.com/image/cache/data/Lokomotywy/lokomotywa41-800x800.gif)
(A bit later and Japanese but it looks right)
Available from here http://www.amercom-hobby.com/index.php?route=product/category&path=63 (http://www.amercom-hobby.com/index.php?route=product/category&path=63) or from eBay.
There's also this one (French and 1854):-
(http://www.amercom-hobby.com/image/cache/data/Lokomotywy/lokomotywa2e-800x800.gif)
You can see these ones in the dioramas.

British Uganda Railway
"Simba" armoured train - not sure Del Prado do one of these :)
Nor one of these - used by the governor!
Another armoured train - subsequently derailed by a German laid mine I think
(http://wwiafrica.ghost.io/content/images/2014/11/HMAT---World-War-one-in-Africa.jpg)
Couple of less military engines
(http://www.mccrow.org.uk/eastafrica/eastafricanrailways/KUR/KUR_398.jpg)(http://www.mccrow.org.uk/eastafrica/eastafricanrailways/KUR/Vulcan%20Foundries_ED1_1913.jpg)

Wow, that's awesome. Not to mention that by combining toy soldiers, trains, boats and trucks you've reached some kind of geek special place.
Water effect in particular is beautiful.
Just brilliant

Ooh, lovely! :)
Not been many planes of late...
Very impressive the attention to detail is excellent
Much prefer trains. Planes get a bit dull after they stopped using string and canvas (apart from the Spitfire).
How does he keep coming up with different subjects.
There is not one that is not an absolute masterpiece

They ARE beautiful !

Those are brilliant
Really good.
Obviously loads better than really good, but I had to make sure this would post first. These latest dioramas are right in my favourite historical period - 1840-1925. I particularly like the use of the Peter Pig ships, especially the balloon barge.
Rather spiffy ! :-bd

Fantastic! ........ and then I thought, shouldn't the Royal Artillery be in blue?
And that apostrophe should never have been there in the first place as the s was a plural s and not a possessive s.

Great work as always. Not sure about the idea of the back scene as you have to be at the right angle for it to really work, but appreciate the workmanship.

Superb! 8)
I love these things.
Can anyone tell me who makes the trains featured? I have been trying to find 10mmm train models for some time without success: the Boer War model made by Pendraken sounds to be of limited use outside of the Boer War.
I bought some very nice 10mm trains on Ebay. They don't work because they are static display models, both C19th. I photographed them and posted them last month but can't quite remember which board. :-[

Superb. I love using railways in a game, especially ACW, FPW and early WWI. Supply depot raid makes for a good scenario with a purpose. I particularly like the warehouse in the third diorama.

I am hooked on the concept of WWI aerodromes. I have plans for a 1914 behind enemy lines raid on such an establishment. I don't know whether, in reality, such a mission was feasible before October 1914 but it would make for an interesting scenario.
Love the prang!
