Lemmy wins!!

I'll be expanding my existing Goblins and Hill dwarves, but i've also got the bare lead ready to go for a Dark elf army.

You'll want to check out the Dragon Men I suspect.

They're somewhere between a traditional High Medieval/High fantasy army, and GW's Empire and Bretonnia armies.  With prismatic dragons thrown in.

Dark elves; I want to use it for Warmaster and Warband with sabot bases :)

Went for dwarves, goblins and wood elves. But to be honest who knows which I might purchase if and when I get round to it.
I like the idea of the Lizardmen though.

What are Taurians by the way?

Centaurs and Minotaurs, with some monstrous allies.  They're based on Greek myth.

They are.  The problem I have with this is rebasing :(

I have a lot of these armies already and if I can figure out a way to make it work without rebasing or sabots I will ;)

You'll be fine.

40x20mm base = 1 unit.  Play on a 2x2' board.

You'll just be playing things scaled down!

None of the above. Early Renaissance humans - and I'll probably wait for the historical version to come out.

An excellent idea!

I can't wait to see them.   :)

Since the rules don't set out what each warband 'should' look like it will be very interesting to see how people build their own versions of the various armies.  This flexibility is intentional really.  Go on!  Be creative!!   :D

I feel the insidious pull towards this stuff and struggling to resist.
The new goblins (more like orcs to me though) are very tempting though 1 pack to a base seems sparse (I put 12-15 models on a 5x3). I'd probably go with 2 packs to a base for that horde feel.

Hill Dwarves are looking like they could become my first purpose designed fantasy army. Should make good opponents to the Dragon men, for which I already have figures from both Pendraken and Citadel.

Title: Re: [POLL] Which army are you planning to start with?
Post by: Nosher on 19 February 2015, 11:29:00 AM
Just ordered the rules and will probably be using my medievals for a human army as others have suggested.

I have NEVER gamed any fantasy (other than Sci-fi) so this is all new to me. I will probably buy either/or of the Goblin and Hill Dwarf army at some stage, but probably not both as they look to have very similar type units and I'm keen to do armies that are very different in play styles.

I'm drawn towards undead and close combat armies so naturally I'm keen to stay away fro anything elvish....

Any hints and tips on which army to go for?

And please stay away from unhelpful ALL OF THE ABOVE - I have a mortgage to pay and children to feed!!  ;D

The undead rely on their commander and magic user to make them effective.  They're dead so don't have much initiative (!) so you really have to use the commander well to get them to fight effectively.

'Close combat army'?  Well, the armies are designed to be relatively well balanced, so most will do.  However if pushed i'd pick out:

Hill dwarves - are a stone wall.  Good solid, tough close fighting infantry.

Barbarian men - 'glass cannons'.  Fragile as theiy're nomadic and lack much armour, but (particularly the bison riders) hit like a train in melee combat.  You need to use them right though to maximise the charging bonuses.

Taurians - go for a small warband of minotaurs.  Tough, scary, but they will be outnumbered.

What I'm really liking is the real variety you can get from the army lists; for example you don't need to have a Hill Dwarf Army as a solid wall of troops, you can make quite am agile aggressive attacking army and still be playing to their strengths. What I guess this means is that each of the 12 armies could potentially suit any play style you prefer.

There are also armies that I wouldn't normally of even considered such as Eldritch Vampires & Lizard Men but these look like they could both be potentials. I'm in the process of creating a basic army builder and it really gives an insight into the range of possibilities within each army...a Barbarian force comprising just Bison Riders & War Mammoths sounds fun :d

Taurians, well the centaurs anyway, to go with this year's/form the basis of next year's competition entry...  :-\

Dark elves, because I already have some in progress, including from last year's painting competition...  ;)

Lizardmen, because I've always loved lizard men.  Hopefully I'll be able to invoke a RuneQuest/Gloranthan Dargonewt vibe!  8->

When they were working out the character races for the game they needed something to fit into the halfling niche. I think Howard the Duck was a major influence, along with Donald and Daffy.

Donald and Daffy's tendency to fly off the handle at a moment's notice was obviously an inspiration for their stereotypical, angry-bird nature  ~X(

Also I can see my next order containing some of the old fantasy armies already currently available.  Hmmm, what to get and when to get it, that just always seems to be the question.   :-\

I voted "goblin" in answer to this question, but having spent some time putting together the wild horde, deciding I need more units (thanks for the very quick order delivery Leon) and sticking as many as I can to bases (I've run out of bases and dice frames now) the next question is what will be my second army? - probably something regular and organised like High Elves. I wonder where they are in the "army revamp" schedule?

In the meantime I have a lot of figures waiting to be undercoated...

Good points!

Barbarian in a fantasy context has a specific meaning that is lacking in the historical context.

That's not of course limiting players in making theor 'barbarian' army look pretty much how they like.

Goblin figures for Necrons Dogs as 'barbarians'?

I still haven't had the chance to play a game of Warband yet but I've been looking through the army lists and trying to work out how the different armies might play.

The undead look very interesting - low Protection but high Motivation so easy to damage, hard to kill (?) but boy are their commanders expensive! I wonder if a horde approach might work - lots of cheap units - quantity over quality?

Really I'd like to try all of the armies out  :D

I'm with you Andy, normally there is a faction or two that sticks out but with Warband they all have appeal and you can get quite a variety with what are relatively simple lists.

because 10mm are quick to paint I'm thinking of putting together small armies for each and then focus on what I have enjoyed painting and playing with the most...or just whichever has the best figures...or some other criteria  :-/

One of the armies I have on order are the old Centaurs to which I am adding Troll Centaurs, most probably use as 'allies or mercenaries' initially, and then trying to work out some house rules for a complete Warband of Centaurs.   :D

They're not listed in any of the armies currently, as they were an odd little conversion done more for fun really.  We may add them to the new ranges at some point, but that would be some way down the line.

Dwarf shock cavalry?  Hmm...well, they get Noble riders as optional troops.  They're pretty shocking.   ;D

However...all is not lost!

You can also take core troops from other lists as allies and mercenaries.  So maybe use the Barbarian Men bison riders, or High elf knights unit stats with your dwarf cavalry models.
