Pretty straight forward to be honest
(http://i1096.photobucket.com/albums/g340/MattofMunslow/AirCavWIP2_zps05fad0af.jpg)
The front cabin and the base of the passenger compartment are in one piece. The huey has part of the engine in the passenger compartment so I made this with bits of match sticks. This helped to support the tail section and the roof (and lots of super glue gel :))
Then fill the gaps with green stuff, lots of filing then add cardboard doors.
Then add chaps on board
(http://i1096.photobucket.com/albums/g340/MattofMunslow/AirCavWIP4_zpsfff4a853.jpg)
Spray white then paint
simples really :)
(took fecking ages really)
Deserves a prize for effort alone (not withstanding paint job).
Awesome :-bd
Thanks matey.

White Russian. I don't want to give away too many secrets, but this is a WWI Russian figure (RP1, I think) that I have converted in to a White Russian by adding five coats of Halford's matt white primer.
I thank you all for this award, which I thoroughly deserve. In doing so, I want to thank all the little people who have helped me become what I am today. There's Techno, without whom I would seem normal, and Westmarcher who is gutted because he didn't think of it first. Then there are the doctors, so many doctors. I'd especially like to thank Doctor Thinkenskrewed, and to him, I say "just do as they tell you, the first six months are the worst".

Probably a vehicle I'd think? You could make it into more of a mini-diorama and then it could go into the 'Open - Single Base' category.
Agree about the Petrine (?) army; if that doesn't take the gold, the standards must be very high indeed.

Thanks for your entry, everything is OK and good luck!
A montage is more than one picture edited into a single image, using Photoshop. This was a montage from last years competition, where there were four pictures in one image:
We decided that it was fair to limit everyone to just two normal pictures for this year's competition.

Hullo,
Couldn't resist adding some bystanders to my ACW ambulance vehicle, so had to enter it in the single base series. Lots of splendid entries all across the board. But I noticed that some people give a little line of information of what we're looking at, and others don't. I have to admit I did spend far too much time on this stand compared to my normal rate, but somehow I just find myself tinkering with command stands, objective markers and other battlefield clutter, and then having a mad minute of trying to finish the infantry regiments before the game night. :-[ I just hope it's not just me, maybe others suffer from preferential treatment of their specialist stands as well?
Cheers,
Aksu
PS looking forward to having the time to start painting lace wars figs, to me those count as "interesting wars".
That is not bad at all. During the game players use to get their attention in command stands more than regular troops. Also they are much more taken in photos.
The problem would the if you paint your commands in one night but you spend hours in a lost regimment unit that lays in the left reserve corner during the battle 8)
I must admit that the really important thing is that you manage to paint the whole army for the game (doesn't matter the the level of painting)

I wholeheartedly agree. I would be more than happy to play with any and all of the work displayed on these pages by the esteemed forum members! In my opinion when gaming in our scale the spectacle is created by the armies and the entire setup, not by individual figures.

I am torn between feeling disappointed not to be in the race (no matter how far behind I'd be trailing) and relieved that I decided that keeping my focus on my 6mm Sumerians was more important than participating because, quite frankly, I think all of the entries so far are amazing!
So, thank you all for the inspiration, well done on all your efforts and while I will heartily congratulate the winners I think it fair to say that none of the entrants need be disappointed if they do not come first!

One of the things that I enjoy about the painting competition is the variety of styles on show.
I find this of interest because a) I don't really like painting - it is a means to an end b) I have still to find my pre 1900 style. I prefer my WWII figures to be drab, almost anonymous, and my ACW are utilitarian rather than colourful.

You'd be better off hosting the images somewhere like Photobucket if possible, as the Forum only allows small files which won't do your entry justice. You can also use Facebook or a blog if you have one?
Alternatively, email me the images and I can upload them on our Photobucket account for you.

Best of luck to all contestants, and a good dose of the various pills to all the judges. They will need them!
P.S. Phil, could you look at my entry first thing in the morning? Every little helps, you know. :P
OK, so...I thought i'd just say a couple of things.
1. The standard of painting each year gets better and better.
2. I do not envy the task ofthe judges this year. There are lots of winners already submitted. Picking 'the one' looks like an impossible task to me.
Well done everyone! =D>

1. SO true !
2. Go away !! ;)
The super strength headache pills are on standby, already !

Okay, that's an entry in every category except 20th Century Foot.
Sticking by my rule of 'It has to be painted in February'.
I can relax in the certain knowledge I won't win a thing! :D
I can't believe that people can paint such small models so well, the standard of entry is so incredibly high. I think I need to work on my technique and get some new eyes.

No, you're great; they're all in the wrong. It's the only way I can motivate myself to pick up a brush :D

Hey, there's still a can of coke/cup of coffee on the line ;)
Just editing my photos, but I won't be peeking at the competition until I post them X_X :D
Cheers!

Good on you Merion.
So many entries this year!
I simply ran out of time.... haven't got time tonight to set something up and the wifes camera is dead anyhow.
Good luck everyone - the standard gets better and better ;) ;)
Looks like we have a 'Walker Off' in the Sci Fi section! :-\
Took me a couple of looks to work out what the title meant on this one ;D ;D ;D

A great objective marker or similar :-bd =D> :-bd
I've just added another entry to the vehicles section.
My problem is, I paint something and think "well, that's not bad." Then I take a photograph and zoom in and ... :'(
Who let the Cadets enter the competition :o ;D
Some stunning entries from all ranks, well done all =D> =D> =D> =D> =D>

Welcome Mr Nero,
I hope now that you've dived into this sea of insanity, you will carry on posting. There is a humour to your work that is sometimes sadly lacking in some of the stuffier members of the forum. (Mention no names, but ... well you can provably work out who they are.)
Would it be fair to say that you're more of a modeller than a gamer?
Welcome anyway.
Hi Scott, great group of little men fanciers (take that how you will)

cheers :) i like my models to be 'doing something' so sometimes there is a comedy element. after a 20+ year tour of a certain millenium that total 1 and 40 and painting to prescribed standards i've loosened up and just do what's fun now. i write my own games too as i find some existing ones a bit too technical for quick fun. Haven't encountered anyone stuffy here as yet and am generally pretty taken with the whole community, nice to feel welcome :)
Hello and welcome Scott. Good painting too. :)

I recently posted my first pics (DMH minis) and when I took the first photo, I had to go back and soften some of the highlighting and black lining. I would say that my painting is now better for it (not that I'm an expert by any stretch).
So, as a result, I'm starting work on my competition entries now so I've got time to get the photographing right :)
Welcome Scott. Which category in the comp did you post your photos?

It's because lens works like magnifying glass.
For me this problem ended when I stared to use standing magnifying glass for painting 8)

As opposed to the look 30 years ago? Techno is being fingered as the cameraman for this, any truth to the rumour Phil?

Yep.....I 'm 99.99999% certain I took that.
I remember taking a couple of extra shots with the 'timer' going, and running down to get in the picture before the wretched camera went click.....
I failed. ;D ;D ;D
Tony Ackland sent me that piccy a couple of days ago.....Where on Earth did you find that ?
Cheers - Phil (And no.....I don't remember
every single person in the photo, as I've told Tone.)
They e are some mighty fine perms there, and amongst the ladies too!

I'd go for zero; any thoughts on that Phil?
I think there are at least four/five or more that are still there.
I'll have a look at the bigger piccy that I got sent a couple of days ago and work out 'who's who'.
Without looking at it at this very moment....I'm trying to think if there are some folk who are actually missing from the shot.
Cheers - Phil

Tony posted it on Facebook. Not only was it a blast from the past but was instrumental in putting me back in touch with Trish. I used to go scrounge coffee and drool over the upcoming figures in the Victoria Street workshop that Trish, Aly and Bob shared here in Edinburgh, when I was having a more stressful than usual day at work.
It's probably one of GW's few redeeming features, that even though they're on a bit of a downward spiral themselves, their legacy includes the people they brought through, who are now bringing more to the hobby elsewhere.

Some of
those guys either didn't work at the studio.....Or joined after I'd gone. ;)
I make 6 that I
believe are still there....(Though possibly working from home, rather than the studio/factory ??) ..Ali & Trish, Alan Merret, John Blanche, Andy Jones, Jervis Johnson.....
One other....Richard Wright....(One of the best figure painters I've
ever known...although he wasn't employed as a figure painter at the studio, when I was there. :o)...I heard that he'd left as a graphic designer (fuzzy felter) ...But had found a new career as an illustrator with them.
There are definitely some missing, from that time.....The (Perry) twins.....Jez Goodwin (Think he's still there).....and there's no Bryan A, either.
Too many memories. ;)
Cheers - Phil

Then you probably met my brother-in-law who also had a workshop there. And when you say coffee it may have been accompanied by an 'elephant dropping'. That was a favourite local delicacy of theirs.

When I remembered I brought biscuits.
As to elephant droppings ... not that I recall ... and it sounds like the sort of thing one might remember :)
I think the only other person I met there was a silver-smith, who taught Paul Henni to do silver-smithing if I remember correctly.

I've tried using magnifiers before but found that because you enlarge both what you're working
on and what you're working
with, it doesn't help that much :-\

Sorting out which is the pack, the cartouch-box, the entrenching tool or the canteen is a mental exercise that drives me mental. I sometimes resort to the "oh, b****r it, paint it black" solution.
