Title: Which colours to get???
Post by: count_zero99uk on 13 August 2010, 01:11:10 PM
Ive collected paints from the Vallejo model colour range for my WW2 and Vietnam minis.  However im looking at going over into Fantasy for a change.

I wouldnt say i had a lot of paints, maybe 30 pots, but there mainly from the green and brown sets. So i was trying to think of what colours to get, to start with.

The company i normaly get from S&M do sets they have picked for various races.  But no starter set.  You can make your own set and get a discount.

So i was wondering, if starting from scratch, what base colours would you pick up for fantasy minis?

I appreciate this is going to be very subjective but id appreciate your comments.

Thanks Brian.

Assuming you already have lots of "military colours", your brown/green range will be useful for painting horses, belts, bows, hats, cloaks, etc..
I would also go for:
- some flesh paint + flesh wash
- some metallic paint (maybe some copper or gold paint)
- some "blood red"

After that, it all depends on what you're planning to paint. If you go with the elves, you might use some blue (runes and stuff), if you go with dwarfs you might use some orange (for beards !)...

Also, I don't have any experience with non fantasy painting but I guess you don't have this "highly coloured" touch. In fantasy painting it is common to paint a part with one colour then highlight it with a brighter colour.
So, for each colour, I would recommend to get the brighter equivalent.
