Last year we had 214 excellent entries, once again pushing the standards of 10mm painting even higher!
The competition always runs throughout the month of February, so your can make your entries anytime between 1st February and midnight on Sat 28th Feb. There's still time to get your orders in if you need to make any last minute entries!
The rules are generally the same as last year, with the usual 7 categories, so there should be a suitable home for every entry! As with last year, each entry is allowed 2 images, except for the 'Open Army!' category, which is allowed up to 5 images. One major change for 2015 is that we are no longer allowing montage entries, just to make sure that everyone is on a level playing field.
Categories:
Foot - Pre-20th C. - Min: 3 / Max: 16 figures on a single base, and pre-1900.
Foot - 20th C. - Min: 3 / Max: 16 figures on a single base/movement tray.
Mounted - Min: 3 / Max: 10 figures on a single base/movement tray.
Vehicle - Single vehicle on or off base.
Fantasy & Sci-Fi - Anything Fantasy or Sci-Fi oriented, on a single base/movement tray.
Open - Single Base - Anything which doesn't fit into the other categories, with a max base size of 100x100mm. Includes single figures, artillery bases, command stands, etc.
Open - Army! - Armies, Units, Dungeons, whole table setups, anything!
If you're unsure which category to put your entry in, let us know what it is, and we'll point you in the right direction!
Rules - Please Read!
- Firstly, all figures must be Pendraken. Conversions are allowed, but only on our figures.
1. You must be a Forum member to enter, but other than that, everyone is welcome!
2. You may enter as many times as you like but each entry is only allowed 2 images (except for the 'Army!' category, see below). As mentioned above, there are no montages this year, although you can edit your two images into a single file for the sake of uploading/hosting them. If you have any difficulty posting pics, they can be emailed to Pendraken and we'll put them up for you.
3. The 'Open - Army!' category may have 5 photo's, as it's difficult to cover a whole army with just a single photo!
4. All entries must be your own work, and have not been entered into any online competitions before.
5. Entries should have been completed in the last 12 months.
6. You can post WIP photo's if you wish, and you can also post extra photo's of your work elsewhere on the Forum. These will not count towards your competition entry.
7. The winners will be decided by a team of judges (to be announced very soon!). Entries will be judged on the painting first and foremost, but remember that effective basing can make a nice entry look even better.
8. Competition threads will be created on the opening date, purely for your entries.
9. Pendraken may use your pics in future promo/marketing, catalogue covers or web pics. Entering gives your permission for your pics to be used.
I'm working hard on the prizes at the moment, as the years go by it's getting harder to find people to tap up for some freebies, but I'm hoping to have some great products lined up for the winners! I'll get those announced in the next week or so hopefully. There will also be a change to the Judging panel this year, so keep an eye out for the new guy!
Remember, the opening day for entries is 1st Feb, which gives you just enough time to get any figures ordered, grab your brushes and get busy! We've seen some great work displayed on the Forum over the past 12 months, so we're hoping to see some of it making an appearance in the Competition!
If there's any questions, let us know!

To save editing time at Pendraken HQ, it might be an idea to give the maximum pixel width of images so entries can conform to the preferred size.
Most gamers don't mount 16 miniatures on one base, so folk new to the competition might like to know that, if last year is anything to go by, there will be entries of up to 16 figures on more than one single base.
And thanks for arranging the competition again this year!

Pixels-wise, ideally they would be upto 1000 pixels wide to fit a standard webpage window, but it's not a hard job to edit them once they're been posted. The forum can resize them, so it's just a width tag in the [ img ] code and they're OK. Sometimes I go through and edit some of them anyway, just to get them to a better size for viewing.
Please don't confuse me, I'm old. My pictures come through one size only.
3" square Polaroid shots!

HAve kept a few bits i painted a couple of months ago just for the competition! I started early this time :D

Its a bit of fun and a chance to see some really good work. Don't stress on it ;)
I have the perfect solution to nervousness about entering the competition .... I'm not nearly good enough at painting to win :)
I hope to get my WW2 Russian General and entourage painted and entered but it's about taking part, supporting Pendraken and getting lots of inspiration!
Another year another painting comp. It seems no time since the last one!!

I can understand this, its quite a big competition, and there are some really good entries. I'm ever hopeful of getting another win (or even second) but the standard of the competition has increased much more quickly than my painting skills, over the last few years!!
But its also a fun competition, and I also find it makes me dig out some old stuff to finish off.

Well based on the Landsknecht competition you totally aced last month, (I wuz robbed), I might just have a cheeky couple of quid on you coming up trumps with this one ;) :D
If you can get odds from Ladbrook's, put a couple of quid on for me !! Though I suspect you will have better chances on the lottery.
Glad you liked my painting on the Zewihanders, but considering you and me were 2/3s of the entries, the odds for both of us were rather shorter than at Pendraken land.

Really looking forward to judging again this year and it's great to some new members showing interest in entering. The standard of painting keeps getting better year by year and even if you do not get placed your work gets seen by an ever increasing number of people.
Good luck to every one.

Good to see you Andy.
How you doing these days?
good evening !!!
I would try my chance too modestly this year, the level is very high, and this is a very good motivation to excel !!!
but the priority remains the exchange between people of good company !!!
eric
I like to think that my painting and photography skills will serve to highlight how good the other entries are. We can't all be that good after all and it is a good prompt to get shifting with things. Last year for example was the push I needed to finish my WW2 German force so I could enter it into the army category, otherwise I'm sure I'd still have some sitting around in their undercoats
Hi Lem, getting there slowly, thanks for asking.
I have been keeping myself busy quietly painting for several forum members ( I'm assured the figures will not be entered in the comp :D ), and slowly getting better.
How are you keeping?
Are you still helping out at shows? I am hoping to be at Triples this year doing a 6mm Napoleonic game, and no I have not gone to the dark side and dropped a scale, all the figures are already painted by other members in our little group.

Vehicle would probably be best for that one, I would have said the Open - Single Base category but it would be too big for the maximum base size requirement.

Maybe a silly question; but if I were to enter a based tank, where the base contained 2 foot figures, would that be disqualified?

Absolutely not i think, there have been vehicles with tank riders and the such in previous competitions so basically the same no?
I was hoping so. My entry will be used in the ww1 army im building so id like it to fit thematically. :)

That's fine, no bother at all. You can enter it in the 'Vehicle' category if it's just a tank and some foot, or if it's more of a mini-diorama you could enter it in the 'Open - Single Base' category instead?
Good luck everyone!

Probably the Open - Single Base category, as long as the base is smaller than 100x100mm?
Its a shame your rules allow only 16 figures to a submission, I base my Infantry in 18s, but oh well, thems the breaks, may still submit some artillery or cavalry, who knows!
That's my ball in good luck ladies and gentlemen I look forward to seeing all that eye candy
cracking job Ironduke :-bd really like the apes
Very nice Ironduke!
After 2 - 3 months of "painter's block" I'm finally back to painting pretty much every day doing 6mm Sumerians. I was already in two minds as to whether to risk breaking the spell by switching to 10mm WW2 for the competition. The more I see of the competition entries the more I think I might stick with Sumerians :)

Another question from a first-timer. What constitutes a movement tray? Can you rank up a unit or do you have to physically produce a movement tray?

Quote- Firstly, all figures must be Pendraken. Conversions are allowed, but only on our figures.

Does the Analogue Hobbies Painting Challenge [which is a 71 -person group painting blog thingy] count?
The normal weekly submission system isn't a painting competition, just a big group paint along like on a forum.
The reason I ask is because the zombies I was going to enter have featured in it here -
http://thepaintingchallenge.blogspot.co.uk/2015/02/from-royw-10mm-very-fashionable-zombies.html (http://thepaintingchallenge.blogspot.co.uk/2015/02/from-royw-10mm-very-fashionable-zombies.html)
I thought I best check and save disqualification later.
I should have some zombie survivors finished in time anyway, if the above are ineligible.
I think you'll be fine there, no worries, as that's not a painting competition really, more of a WIP/Get Something Painted type affair.
Thank you for the ruling.

That's a typo, apologies for that. The deadline should be midnight on Saturday night, so folks have got chance to finish their entries on Saturday and get them posted up.
We are away at a show on Saturday, but I'll be home by about 7-8pm. I might leave the threads open a little later just to allow the folks in the US to get their entries in, but I'll be closing them at around 3am/4am on Sunday morning.
Next year is a leap year, so the deadline will fall on a Monday night. Hopefully that will allow people an extra day over the weekend to get more entries finished up.

For myself Its the taking part, and the friendly competition that's important, like my lad Simon and myself for the last 3 years we have made it yearly event of entry rivalry.
And of course it promotes the whole of the Pendraken range which can't be a bad thing.

Good luck all.

I know, we're hoping we can make it a bit more of a regular 9-5 before the end of the year. But with Dave still at the day job he doesn't get down to the unit until 6pm, so he's working a 6pm-11pm shift as well. We finish about the same time each night and then I head home and do a few hours work on the computer before bed.
Just a quick message to let everyone know that the winners of the 2015 Pendraken Painting Competition will be announced tonight, March 5th, at 7pm GMT!

Good luck everyone; some truly stunning entries =D>
What a great competition , some truly beautiful work across all categories, a true showcase of what can be achieved in 10mm. Judging these were far more difficult than i expected, i wish i had a pound for each time i looked at an entry picture ;D, now i'm going to relax with a nice bottle of red. ;D.
Well done to all who entered.

I have high hopes myself by going for the 'pity vote' and splitting the vote of the well painted entries

Many thanks to all the judges, and apologies for the headaches ;)
