10mm Dungeon World Boxed Set â€" First Review
Well, my very own Dungeon World boxed set arrived in the post today, and as I am one of the first to receive this complete game `ready to play ` package from Pendraken Miniatures, I thought it might be nice to put together a small review to help others decide whether or not to buy a set for themselves... in answer, short and sweet: anyone who likes table top fantasy dungeon crawl games using miniatures on a three dimensional terrain board... look no further; for this game is an absolute must.
First impressions:
I was pleasantly surprised at how heavy the parcel was when the postman popped it into my hands; and the slight rattling of multiple components within the box just waiting to be revealed, was delightfully tantalising.
When I actually got round to cutting open the packaging (well wrapped I was glad to see) I noticed the box itself was fairly sturdy... a big bonus straight away, because it means all the game components can be placed back inside the box between games and stored away neatly and safely on the shelf.
Opening the lid of the game itself, I was absolutely delighted at the sight in front of my eyes:
A complete three dimensional resin cast dungeon, and a various assortment of metal doors to join rooms and chambers together; a sealed packet of monsters to inhabit and roam the complex, a packet of five different heroes, and all the rules, charts and tables actually needed to play the game. The box was literally crammed full of goodies, and I found myself smiling with delight at owning my very own copy of this amazing bundle which Pendraken have put together for us to enjoy â€" literally everything you need to get started in Dungeon Crawl Gaming.
Components:
The figure mix is superb. I`m always critical of games which claim to be complete - but which aren’t. Oh sure, there’s loads you can add to the Dungeon World boxed set at a later date... additional dungeon tiles and furnishings, a few more heroes, and some different monsters perhaps; but these can be purchased later on at your leisure, as time affords and your budget allows. But the nice thing is that the components you get in the initial boxed set should keep even the most critical and sceptical of gamers happy for a very nice long time, without even needing to add any more to the game.
The resin dungeon tiles are nicely moulded, with no noticeable flash, and will need the minimum of sanding (or none at all in fact) before getting straight down to undercoating and painting.
As an aside, for quick yet highly attractive results with the dungeon: try undercoating the tiles with matt white spray from a can. Allow a few minutes to dry, then using a matt black spray paint (hold the can quite far away so as not to overdo it) and very lightly spray over the white undercoat... this will achieve a grey stone effect as the black almost dry brushes over/into the white. The whole thing should only take you about ten minutes, including drying time.
As for the figures themselves: I`d advise basing them individually on small coins (I use 1 cent pieces, available from most banks if you ask them nicely). They not only make each miniature look really neat, but they make a feature of each and every piece in your collection. Germy has done us proud with the sheer scope and excellent sculpting standard of these amazing miniatures.
The rules for this game are total and complete. “Total and complete†because the rules encourage players to ADD their own ideas and input, make up their very own character starting kits and monster stats to the game; so that not only each game, but each Draken Master (or Dungeon Master) is encouraged to inject his or her unique feel into their own personal projects. So in effect, you`ll never be looking to purchase additional rule books or spending a king’s ransom on even a single army codex. Any additional supplement material for the game will be made available by Pendraken in the form of additional `sets` to enhance the initial starter game (I believe this is the plan, but I may have it wrong â€" Leon?).
Of course, collectors can simply purchase additional dungeon tiles, dungeon trimmings, and miniatures for themselves by picking and choosing off the Pendraken catalogue list just like normal. However, complete sets, additional dungeon scenarios and miniatures specific to each new add on supplement, DOES have its own appeal, don`t you think?
Ten out of Ten to Pengraken for giving us the first ever complete dungeon crawl role playing game the world has ever seen â€" and in 10mm too.

All kidding aside, I have to agree with Six on all points. No I did not get the Boxed set, I have, over the course of a few years, bought what has been placed into the boxed set and more! It really wasnt until the Dungeon World rules first came out that we started to use the Dungeon. Germy's sculpting really adds great pleasure in gaming with the 10mm dungeon, it brings back those fond memories from the 70s and 80s using D&D and 25mm figures for crawling. Using 10mm minis with a complete dungeon is awesome! And the bonus of the complete game in the box is the cost is soooo much less on your pocketbook than trying to recreate what you get in the boxed set using 25mm!
Really three (or four) dudes need the glory for such a wonderful gaming environment with a 10mm Dungeon Crawl:

The plan is to continue with other scenario sets, with accompanying monster/hero packs. I'll also be looking at creating a Booster pack of Dungeon pieces for people over the coming weeks.
Oh NOOoooo not scenario packs!!! They goes the pocketbook, I'll just mail it to you Leon :P

I do like the suggested simplicity here: having wandered off from roleplaying / dungeoneering for a while, I've been trying to get back into it for the last couple of years; my kids aren't *quite* old enough to roleplay 'properly' yet [ie w/ nothing more than dice, pencils & imagination] but give them some terrain & figures and they 'get' it [cf Space Hulk]
Good stuff - just need to make room in the schedule to get this & get it painted :)

So I thought I`d cheer myself up by taking a look at my favourite wargame forum :)
First thing I saw was a blinding error in something I wrote about painting resin dungeons. Okay its completely overtaken now by the amazing and incredible works of others who put my efforts to shame, but I really should correct what I wrote before I ruin anyone`s new unpainted tiles.
In the review above, I suggest undercoating in white then spraying over that with black.... Nooooooo don`t do it. It should read undercoat in matt BLACK and lightly spray matt WHITE over the black base coat =)

On a tangent... I just finished reading (again) Aliens V Predator Omnibus 1: Graphic Novel, and am struck (a) just what an amazing movie/film this would make, and (b) how it could have been written and animated with 10mm Pendraken Sci-fi minis in mind when it was created. I most definitely will have to do something with this story. Loads of scenarios in mind from the book.
