Hi Edward - look further up this thread & you'll see how I've painted the bases: to get the texture, I PVA the base & add my sand mix [mostly playsand with some sharp sand & fine grit added], when that's dry I seal it with a glue wash [really watered down PVA] & let dry before undercoating.

I've since added a couple finishing details to the test stand that I'd missed: gold seal on the cartridge pouch, hair braids & highlight on musket.

In terms of order of painting:

Gaiters & Tricornes
Uniform - coat & trousers & crossbelt; tricorne piping [grey & white]
Turnbacks & cuffs
Musket [brown] & bayonet [metal]
Flesh [base & highlight]
Details: seal on pouch & hair
Then highlights...

I'm debating whether or not to give these a magic wash: not sure if they need it really...I'll have a think  

I've now done all the black on all the musketeers...took me another 30 mins, so: total elapsed time to now: 5 hrs 20 mins

Oh - and here's a question for those in the know: should the back of the coat have (blue) turnbacks or not? It's stupidly difficult to find pictures of the backs of uniforms

If I understand you correctly, yes.  There is a slit at the back of the coat, the fabric from the bottom corner at the slit is brought forward to meet the bottom corner of the front at the side.  The lining shows.

Austrian uniforms differed in detail, but the basic tailoring is the same.

Right - whilst enjoying the All Whites holding Italy to a 1-1 draw, I finished this lot: details, hair etc & bunged flags on - about an hour - so

I've decided that these will get a wash - will do later tonight. I'll finish bases once the whole army's done

I think you should...it's easy  

From overbrush stage, this lot (180 figures) took 3 hrs 30 mins  - and I was watching footie for some of that

Missed this one earlier...have you tried 'edging'? Rather than try to paint the lace on with the tip of the brush, use the side of the brush, at an angle to the hat brim & run it along...much better control - and way easier!
