Having committed to going ahead with the ITLSU 1914/17 project and frankly "converted" to 10mm as a great scale for new periods been looking at whats down the line for next year (potentially)  ;)

Always seemed to like armies that don't have great track records (e.g. got 15 and 25mm versions of "the one true army" - Charles the Bold's Burgundian Ordonnance for DBM in my cupboard).

I have a lot of Scots ancestry and was thinking about doing some ECW in Scotland as always been intreged by Montrose and his ill-starred encounters with the Covenanters..

Can anyone suggest a decent set of ECW rules that would cover smaller scale actions that were fought north of the border 1640 - 1660 period?

I see from this post: http://www.pendrakenforum.co.uk/index.php/topic,9606.0.html that the WWAE rules include an Alford scenario. Can anyone comment on WWAE rule set? Looks good.

Cheers

Hi Pierre

Personally my preferred set of rules for ECW is Field of Glory Renaissance. Check out these Batreps to get a feel for them (using 15mm figures unfortunately):

Give Forlorn Hope a try. Some of the scenarios are very small actions but give a great game. Furthermore the rule system means you don't have to worry about the number of pike vis-a-vis shot in a unit.

Hello pierre the shy

Have a look at The Perfect Captains Very Civile Actions http://perfectcaptain.50megs.com/vcactions.html (this has cards for the armies of Scotland) which is the ECW variant for Spanish Fury Actions http://perfectcaptain.50megs.com/sfactions.html which is a system set up to play (from the blurb):-

Quote"These rules cover conflicts involving at most 2500 men, at the  least about 300. All types of low-level fighting are covered; minor battles, ambushes, raids, prison-breaks, cattle rustling and the storming of forts!"

Best part is they're free so you can download them, look them over and, if you like them, print them out.

There's a review at the Edinburgh - Orkney Wargames Site:-

On the Yahoo group there is a QRS and some Battalion level optional rules https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/perfect_captain/files/VCA%20Extras/. Not sure if you can get them without joining.

First of I should say I was involved in the development of the WWAE rules. So I will only comment on some of the issues here.

The ECW in Scotland is perfect for these rules as they aim at smaller battles like those fought in Scotland, and indeed were common everywhere. They use the idea Dour Puritan mentions and indeed are in some ways an updated version of the Forlorn Hope rules. Also they try to reflect a more up to date view of the war.

I am happy to answer any questions you have about them or you can contact via the details here - http://www.wfgamers.org.uk/WWAE.htm

Peter Pig's Regiment of Foote, they give a damn good game with a shed load of uncertainty. you may pick the perfect army BUT will they all trurn up? And of those that do turn up, which ones will turn up on time for the "kick off"? Evren once play has commenced will those elite cavalry of yours understand AND obey your orders. Theyre fun, theyre cheap at £10, the production value isnt as good as their later sets but they work and have lists for North of the Border armies.

The age old question of a decent set of ECW rules....

Agree with DP - FOG Renaissance purely because everything else out there at the moment just doesn't do it for me. Used to be a big fan of Forlorn Hope but single figure removal and clunky movement measurements left me feeling nauseas along with super elite royalist cavalry!
I don't think my wife likes me very much, when I had a heart attack she wrote for an ambulance.

Thanks for taking the time to reply and for all the suggestions.

Certainly plenty of choice out there rules wise for the ECW period.

I'll have a look at them but not in any hurry as WW1 stuff will be arriving shortly  ;D

But that'll be over by Christmas.

For the mounted cavalry it certainly will be  ;)
